Nail-Associated Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors: Habit-Tic Nail Deformity, Onychophagia, and Onychotillomania.

Habit-tic nail deformity, onychophagia (also referred to as nail biting) and onychotillomania (also referred to as nail picking) are body-focused repetitive behaviors that can involve the nails and periungual skin. Patients with habit-tic nail deformity are typically unaware that repeatedly using their nail, often the adjacent index finger, to rub the proximal nail fold and its underlying matrix - usually of one or both of their thumbnails - is the cause of the longitudinal depressed groove that extends along the entire the nail plate. Nail biters usually bite multiple nails - most commonly on…

Nail StrainStress Meter NM 100: A novel in vivo method to characterize biomechanical properties of nails.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, nail care products are extremely important both in medical and cosmetic fields. Actually, there are only a very few "in vivo" methods to evaluate the safety and the efficacy of nail products. METHODS: The new apparatus, based on a recently patented technology, is developed for the "in vivo" evaluation of nails in terms of thickness, structural firmness, flattening, and bending properties. The device analyzes nails by an "in vivo" non-invasive methodology in a timely way and with high accuracy. The assessment of the resistance to compression measures the cohesion of the n…

Nailing of proximal ulna fractures: biomechanical comparison of a new locked nail with angular stable plating.

PURPOSE: Proximal ulna fractures are common injuries and frequently treated with angular stable plating. This surgical option shows good functional results. Relevant drawbacks such as large soft tissue exposure, compromised blood supply of fracture fragments and disturbing osteosynthetic material are described. The aim of this study was to compare a new locked proximal ulna nail with angular stable plating in a biomechanical testing setup for extraarticular proximal ulna fractures. METHODS: Ten pairs of sawbones with a Jupiter type IIB proximal ulna fracture (OTA 2U1A3.1) were tested after os

Evaluation of the Ability of a Novel Miconazole Formulation To Penetrate Nail by Using Three In Vitro Nail Models.

In an effort to increase the efficacy of topical medications for treating onychomycosis, several new nail penetration enhancers were recently developed. In this study, the ability of 10% (wt/wt) miconazole nitrate combined with a penetration enhancer formulation to permeate the nail is demonstrated by the use of a selection of in vitro nail penetration assays. These assays included the bovine hoof, TurChub zone of inhibition, and infected-nail models.

Influence of nail prominence and insertion point on anterior knee pain after tibial intramedullary nailing.

Chronic anterior knee pain is the most common complication after tibial nail insertion. Its etiology remains unknown, and multifactorial sources have been suggested. The authors believe that nail prominence and the insertion point of the nail are important in the development of anterior knee pain. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the roles of the insertion point and nail prominence in anterior knee pain after tibial intramedullary nailing using a transtendinous approach and a common nail type. A total of 108 patients with tibial shaft fractures underwent reamed intramedu

New concepts in median nail dystrophy, onychomycosis, and hand, foot, and mouth disease nail pathology.

Nails are underutilized as diagnostic tools, despite being involved in many dermatologic conditions. This paper explores new concepts in the treatment of median nail dystrophy (MND), onychomycosis, and the nail pathology of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). A Pubmed database literature search was conducted for MND treatment, onychomycosis treatment, and HFMD nail pathology. Only papers published after January 2008 were reviewed. The results showed that 0.1% tacrolimus ointment can be an effective treatment for MND. Early studies on laser therapy indicate that it is a safe and efficacious t…

Evaluation of nail disease in psoriatic arthritis by using a modified nail psoriasis severity score index.

BACKGROUND: The Classification of Psoriatic Arthritis Study Group published new criteria for classifying psoriatic arthritis (PsA) which included nail psoriasis. Our aim was to clarify the clinical importance of nail disease in PsA patients. METHODS: We investigated the types and severity of nail disease by using the modified nail psoriasis severity score index (mNAPSI) in 23 PsA patients and 23 patients with uncomplicated psoriasis. We analyzed the relationships of mNAPSI with nail fold psoriasis, psoriasis area and severity index score, swollen and/or tender joint counts, distal interphalan

[Comparative study of the treatment of pertrochanteric fractures--trochanteric gamma nail vs. proximal femoral nail].

AIM: We have performed a retrospective comparative study between the trochanteric gamma nail (TGN) and the proximal femoral nail (PFN). METHOD: During the period 1998-2003, 97 TGN and 83 PFN were used for the treatment of pertrochanteric fractures. Most of the fractures were of the A3 type according to the AO/ASIF classification. Clinical and radiological follow-ups were available for 87 TGN and 65 PFN. RESULTS: The mean operative time for the TGN was shorter than that for the PFN. Intraoperative complications were noted in 17.5 % and 28.8 % for the TGN and PFN groups, respectively. Late com

Assignment of the gene for a new hereditary nail disorder, isolated congenital nail dysplasia, to chromosome 17p13.

Isolated congenital nail dysplasia is an autosomal dominant disorder recently observed in a large family from southern Germany. The disorder is characterized by longitudinal streaks, thinning, and impaired formation of the nail plates leading to increased vulnerability of the free nail margins. In most cases, all fingernails and toenails are similarly involved with some accentuation of the thumb and great toenails. Histologic changes include hypergranulosis of the nail matrix and epithelial outgrowths from the nail bed. Patients do not show any alterations of hair growth and dentition, no malf…

Successful use of topical vitamin E solution in the treatment of nail changes in yellow nail syndrome.

A double-blind controlled study was performed on a patient with long-standing yellow nail syndrome to investigate the potential beneficial role of topical vitamin E solution for the nail changes seen in this disorder. Three nails received active solution containing DL-alpha-tocopherol in dimethyl sulfoxide; three nails received dimethyl sulfoxide only; and the remainder were untreated. After 6 months of therapy, the three nails treated with active solution showed marked clinical improvement and a corresponding increase in nail growth rates. Dimethyl sulfoxide alone produced a small increase in…
