Neurologic itch is defined as pruritus resulting from any dysfunction of the nervous system. Itch arising due to a neuroanatomic pathology is seen to be neuropathic. Causes of neuropathic itch range from localized entrapment of a peripheral nerve to generalized degeneration of small nerve fibers. Antipruritic medications commonly used for other types of itch such as antihistamines and corticosteroids lack efficacy in neuropathic itch. Currently there are no therapeutic options that offer relief in all types of neuropathic pruritus, and treatment strategies vary according to etiology. It is bes

Neurological disorders caused by pregnancy and puerperium include the posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, the amniotic fluid embolism syndrome (AFES), the postpartum angiopathy due to reversible vasoconstriction syndrome, and the Sheehan syndrome. Hypertension and proteinuria are the hallmarks of preeclampsia, seizures define eclampsia. Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets constitute the HELLP syndrome. Vision disturbances including cortical blindness occur in the posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). The Sheehan syndrome presents with panhypopituitarism

Pregnant women are subject to the same complications as the general population, as well to specific neurologic complications associated with pregnancy, such as preeclampsia or eclampsia. The hormonal and physiologic changes during pregnancy lead to altered incidences of these complications, which usually present during the late period of pregnancy, labor, or the puerperium. In addition, the treatment of these conditions is different from that of nonpregnant women, because special attention is paid to avoid any abnormalities or death of the fetus. This article discusses the most common of these

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are progressive multisystem lysosomal storage diseases caused by defective catabolism of complex molecules, namely the glycosaminoglycans and their consequent accumulation in tissues. Of the 7 clinical types representing 11 different enzyme deficiencies, only MPS III (Sanfilippo syndromes A, B, C and D) and severe forms of MPS I (Hurler's syndrome), MPS II (severe Hunter syndrome) and MPS VII (severe Sly syndrome) give rise to progressive cerebral disease. Neurosensory complications (hearing impairment, retinopathy and optic atrophy) can also occur in some types. Ca

BACKGROUND: Snowmobiles are increasingly popular recreational, all-terrain utility vehicles that require skill and physical strength to operate given their inherent maneuverability, acceleration, and top speed capabilities. These same characteristics increase the risk of injury with the operation of these vehicles, particularly neurological injury. We characterize our series of 107 patients involved in snowmobiling accidents.
METHODS: From January 2004 to January 2012, all snowmobiling-related injuries referred to our regional trauma center were reviewed. Information had been recorded in the

Neurological diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in pregnancy. The management of multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, certain neuropathies and headache in pregnancy is described; the potentially life-threatening conditions of stroke and eclampsia are also discussed. Management of most neurological conditions is similar to outside of pregnancy, but special consideration should be given to delivery plans and the safety of medications antenatally and during breastfeeding. Pre-pregnancy counselling, regular review and effective communication among a multi-disciplinary

Preeclampsia is characterized by hypertension, peripheral edema and proteinuria, but very often also includes neurologic complications. Neurologic complications of severe preeclampsia are indentical to those of hypertensive encephalopathy. The most common neurologic symptoms are headache, vomiting, mental disorders, visual disturbances, sensorimotor deficits and seizures. Endothelial cell dysfunction is the main cause of multiorgan failure. It is of utmost importance to recognize these symptoms and initiate apropriate therapy. Systemic blood presure must not exceed the cerebrovascular autoregu

Recipients of solid organ or hematopoietic cell transplants are at risk of life-threatening neurological disorders including encephalopathy, seizures, infections and tumors of the central nervous system, stroke, central pontine myelinolysis, and neuromuscular disorders-often requiring admission to, or occurring in, the intensive care unit (ICU). Many of these complications are linked directly or indirectly to immunosuppressive therapy. However, neurological disorders may also result from graft versus host disease, or be an expression of the underlying disease which prompted transplantation, as

HIV is neuroinvasive with early involvement of the nervous system and has the potential to cause disease at any site of the neuro-axis during the evolution from seroconversion to late stage HIV. Disease may result from direct viral infection, indirect immune-deficiency driven opportunistic infections, AIDS-defining cancers, antiretroviral (ARV) drug therapy, or less well elucidated associations, such as vascular events (Table 1). Recognition of each of these is paramount in the prevention or attenuation of long-term morbidity. Though the epidemiology of neurological disease has altered substan

Vaccines have undoubtedly been a medical milestone, preventing immeasurable morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases worldwide. Modern vaccines have tremendously reduced the global impact of numerous infections; they have succeeded in eliminating smallpox completely. However, the nature by which vaccines confer their protection-by stimulation of the immune system-means that in rare cases, adverse often immunologically mediated events may occur following vaccination. Some of the most severe of these involve the nervous system. The author provides an overview of the mechanisms of vaccino

Symptoms appearing after vaccination are easily interpreted as resulting from the vaccination, although the association with vaccination would be only temporal. Vaccinations are useful and safe also in context with neurological diseases. Refraining from vaccinations should be considered only in those fallen ill with the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) after vaccination, or if the vaccination has exacerbated the symptoms of GBS. Influenza vaccines should be recommended as part of treatment practice in multiple sclerosis (MS), because influenza infections are associated with increased risk of exac

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are uncommon and defined by an acute or subacute neurological syndrome associated with a cancer. These syndromes often antedate the diagnostis of the underlying neoplasia that is usually not clinically evident. An early diagnosis is the main condition for a better neurological and carcinologic outcome. Subacute cerebellar ataxia, subacute sensitive neuropathy, limbic encephalomyelitis, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, opsoclonus myoclonus, dermatopolymyositis and intestinal pseudo-obstruction belong to the well-characterized PNS and their presence

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS, has infected an estimated 33 million individuals worldwide. HIV is associated with immunodeficiency, neoplasia, and neurologic disease. The continuing evolution of the HIV epidemic has spurred an intense interest in a hitherto neglected area of medicine, neuroinfectious diseases and their consequences. This work has broad applications for the study of central nervous system (CNS) tumors, dementias, neuropathies, and CNS disease in other immunosuppressed individuals. HIV is neuroinvasive (can enter the CNS), neurotrophic (can live in ne

Apheresis is a general term that describes removal of abnormal blood constituents by extracorporeal blood purification methods. To date, therapeutic plasma exchange (PE) is the most common apheresis procedure. Here, plasma is separated from corpuscular blood constituents and replaced with a substitution fluid. In contrast to immunoadsorption, PE is a nonspecific treatment modality with elimination of the entire plasma. The therapeutic effect is based on the removal of circulating, pathogenic immune factors including autoantibodies. Currently, PE is used for treatment of several immune-mediated

Neurologic running injuries account for a small number of running injuries. This may be caused by misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis. Nerve injuries that have been reported in runners include injuries to the interdigital nerves and the tibial, peroneal, and sural nerves. In this article, the etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of these injuries are reviewed. Differences between nerve injury and more common musculoskeletal injury have been presented to aid in differential diagnosis.

Eclampsia is a poorly understood disorder characterized by seizures or unexplained coma in setting of gestational hypertension. Its neurological manifestations are varied and are an important cause of the morbidity and mortality associated. We present a comprehensive prospective study of forty women recruited over four years describing neurological symptoms and signs, neuroimaging and laboratory studies as well as prognosis including 3-6 months follow-up. The seizures occurred in the postpartum period in majority of women (55%), while 45% had seizures before labor, and the rest (5%) during lab
