Feasibility of controlled micturition through electric stimulation.

Historically, man has been aware of bioelectric phenomena for some 4,000 years. Yet it has only been during the last 20 years that technology has advanced to the stage where controlled bladder emptying has become feasible. A great deal of interest followed the introduction of transistor and bladder stimulation via the principle of radio frequency induction. Spinal cord, sacral, and pelvic nerve and direct bladder stimulation have all been attempted. Only direct bladder stimulation in lower motor neuron situations has shown any promise. The many difficulties associated with bladder stimulation

[Systems of chemoperception in decapod crayfish].

The review presents data on some peripheral and central structures in the system of perception of chemical stimuli in crayfish and other Decapoda. The hair receptors on chelipeds, antennas, antennules are innervated by mechano-and chemoreceptor neurons. Antennules are the specialized crayfish chemoreceptor organs, on the surface of which groups of exteroceptors are located. There is an ordered disposition of exteroceptor receptive fields in the form of receptor hair bushes on claws of ambulatory feet (AF), antennas, antennules, and other movable appendages. Behavioral experiments have shown se

Citicoline in cardiovascular protection: mechanistic roles of choline and acetylcholine.

Citicoline (CDP-choline) is a rate-limiting precursor for phosphatidylcholine synthesis and acetylcholine production, and thus a unique metabolic hub linking membrane phospholipid homeostasis with cholinergic signaling. The biochemical rationale for the therapeutic potential of citicoline in heart disease is rooted in fundamental metabolic principles and conserved cytoprotective pathways. However, the cardiovascular evidence base for citicoline is not as extensive as its established neuroprotective profile. The cardioprotection is mainly mediated by the cholinergic system, including vagal effe

Contribution of Sympathetic Sensory Coupling to Craniofacial Nociception.

Stress and anxiety are associated with increased pain intensity in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) patients. It is possible that this association is due to a direct interaction between the sympathetic and sensory nervous systems. This narrative review examines evidence for a potential sympathetic sensory interaction in deep craniofacial tissues and the trigeminal ganglion. Research articles were identified using PubMed with the mesh terms adrenergic, ganglion neuron, masseter, sensory, signaling, temporomandibular and trigeminal and, subsequently, from the reference lists of those articles

Variability of anterior external arcuate fibers in the human medulla oblongata.

Anterior external arcuate fibers (AEAF) are efferents of the arcuate nuclei, which are located on the ventral surface of pyramids. Several types of fibre bundles superficial to the pyramids have been described in early and mid 20th century. Recently, few of these have been studied in detail. Objective of present study was to observe the morphology of AEAF in the Indian population. Distinct AEAF were noted in 13 out of 50 brain specimens. Based on their relation to olive, AEAF were further classified as supraolivary, preolivary and supraolivary fibers and their prevalence noted as 25%, 15%, and

Treatment of non-epileptic episodes of anxious, fearful behavior in adolescent juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (CLN3 disease).

BACKGROUND: Recurrent non-epileptic episodes of frightened facial and body expression occur in more than half of post-adolescent patients with juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL, CLN3 disease). Clinically, the episodes look similar to the attacks of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) commonly seen following traumatic brain injury (TBI). The episodes occur when the patients are exposed to separation, hear loud sounds or are otherwise bothered by discomfort and as in PSH following TBI, the attacks are difficult to prevent and/or treat. AIM AND METHODS: Based on present knowle

Abnormal microstructure of the atrophic thalamus in preterm survivors with periventricular leukomalacia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The neuroanatomic substrate of cognitive deficits in long-term survivors of prematurity with PVL is poorly understood. The thalamus is critically involved in cognition via extensive interconnections with the cerebral cortex. We hypothesized that the thalamus is atrophic (reduced in volume) in childhood survivors of prematurity with neuroimaging evidence of PVL and that the atrophy is associated with selective microstructural abnormalities within its subdivisions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed quantitative volumetric and DTI measurements of the thalamus in 17 chil

Pre-synaptic modulation of quadriceps arthrogenic muscle inhibition.

Arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) impedes rehabilitation following knee joint injury by preventing activation of the quadriceps. AMI has been attributed to neuronal reflex activity in which altered afferent input originating from the injured joint results in a diminished efferent motor drive to the quadriceps muscles. Beginning to understand the mechanisms responsible for muscle inhibition following joint injury is vital to control or eliminate this phenomenon. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation is to determine if quadriceps AMI is mediated by a presynaptic regulatory mechanism. Ei

A prospective controlled study of sleep respiratory events in patients with craniovertebral junction malformation.

OBJECT: Craniovertebral junction malformation (CVJM) or Chiari malformation in adults, with or without syringomyelia and basilar invagination, produces neuronal dysfunction of the brainstem, cerebellum, cranial nerves, and upper spinal cord. The respiratory center and some of its afferent and efferent components can be altered in these diseases. The authors studied patients with and without CVJM to determine whether this physical feature contributed to sleep disturbances. METHODS: Respiratory manifestations during sleep were studied prospectively, by using whole-night polysomnography, in 32 s

[Specificity and sensitivity of transient click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE)].

Transient click evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) have been shown to be a good test of hearing impairment especially when used for infant screening. However, occasional cases of false positive results--TEOAEs in spite of severe hearing loss--have been reported. This study encompasses 243 children whose hearing thresholds were known from subjective hearing tests and--in questionable cases--derived from additional auditory evoked potentials. The TEOAEs proved to have a high sensitivity (93%) and a reasonable specificity (67%), if the margin between good and bad hearing was set at 30 dB. Howev

Neuronal Cell Mechanisms of Pain.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a distressful feeling that is frequently caused by intense or damaging chemical, thermal or mechanical stimuli. It can also occur without tissue damage or injury, although the patient makes reference to it. Pain is one of the body's most important communication tools, and a protective mechanism by which the body responds to noxious or harmful stimuli. The cascade of molecular events that culminate in the experience of pain in an individual is a complex neural phenomenon in which inordinate (excess) noxious peripheral stimuli are processed. OBJECTIVE: The work discussed com

Enteric nervous system: sensory transduction, neural circuits and gastrointestinal motility.

The gastrointestinal tract is the only internal organ to have evolved with its own independent nervous system, known as the enteric nervous system (ENS). This Review provides an update on advances that have been made in our understanding of how neurons within the ENS coordinate sensory and motor functions. Understanding this function is critical for determining how deficits in neurogenic motor patterns arise. Knowledge of how distension or chemical stimulation of the bowel evokes sensory responses in the ENS and central nervous system have progressed, including critical elements that underlie

Constantin von Economo's contribution to the understanding of movement disorders.

Constantin von Economo's (CvE) main scientific achievements were his studies on the cytoarchitectonics of the cerebral cortex, sleep, and encephalitis lethargica (EL). He found a close relationship between motor symptoms and psychiatric and behavioral disorders in EL and postencephalitic Parkinsonism and identified the underlying neuropathology in the diencephalon and the brainstem. In agreement with Tretiakoff's findings in Parkinson's disease, CvE related postencephalitic Parkinsonism to neuronal loss in the substantia nigra. Several of CvE's early, less well-known publications also deal wit

Reorganization of sympathetic preganglionic connections in cat bladder ganglia following parasympathetic denervation.

1. Experiments were undertaken to examine the mechanisms involved in the reorganization of sympathetic efferent pathways to the urinary bladder of the cat following chronic unilateral, parasympathetic preganglionic denervation of the bladder. 2. Electrical stimulation (10-30 Hz) of the hypogastric nerve in cats with an intact bladder innervation or on the normally innervated side of the bladder in unilaterally denervated preparations elicited low-amplitude (10-25 cmH2O) transient (10-30 s) bladder contractions and non-synaptic axonal volleys on bladder postganglionic nerves. However, after chr

Potencies of doxapram and hypoxia in stimulating carotid-body chemoreceptors and ventilation in anesthetized cats.

The effects of doxapram on carotid chemoreceptor activity and on ventilation (phrenic-nerve activity) were tested before and after denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors in cats. Doxapram was found to be a potent stimulus to the carotid chemoreceptors; the stimulation produced by 1.0 mg/kg doxapram, iv, equalled that produced by a Pao2 of 38 torr. Doxapram also increased phrenic-nerve activity in doses as low as 0.2 mg/kg, iv. After denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors, doxapram in doses as large as 6 mg/kg failed to stimulate ventilation. It is concluded that (in anesthetized ca

A New Hypothesis on the Frequency Discrimination of the Cochlea.

OBJECTIVE: Medial olivocochlear efferent (MOCE) neurons innervate outer hair cells (OHCs) of the cochlea, which in turn leads to basilar membrane motion. We hypothesized that MOCE-induced alterations in basilar membrane motion, independent of traveling waves, is responsible for the cochlear frequency discrimination of sound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven guinea pigs underwent bilateral otoscopic and audiologic evaluations under general anesthesia. The study comprised two parts. Part I (n=11) included spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) recordings with or without contralateral pure-tone ac

Donor age dependent graft development and recovery in a rat model of Huntington's disease: histological and behavioral analysis.

Neural cell replacement therapy using fetal striatal cells has provided evidence of disease modification in clinical trials in Huntington's disease (HD) patients, although the results have been inconsistent. One of the contributing factors to the variable outcome could be the different capacity of transplanted cells derived from the primordial striatum to proliferate and maturate into striatal projection neurons. Based on the rodent lesion model of HD, the current study investigated how intrastriatal-striatal grafts from variable aged donors develop in vivo and how they influence functional re

Pharmacology for the treatment of premature ejaculation.

Male sexual response comprises four phases: excitement, including erection; plateau; ejaculation, usually accompanied by orgasm; and resolution. Ejaculation is a complex sexual response involving a sequential process consisting of two phases: emission and expulsion. Ejaculation, which is basically a spinal reflex, requires a tight coordination between sympathetic, parasympathetic, and somatic efferent pathways originating from different segments and area in the spinal cord and innervating pelvi-perineal anatomical structures. A major relaying and synchronizing role is played by a group of lumb

Transient receptor potential A1 receptor-mediated neural cross-talk and afferent sensitization induced by oxidative stress: implication for the pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

Although the pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome remains unknown, there is a significant correlation of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome with other chronic pain disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis and fibromyalgia syndrome. In this review, we highlight evidence supporting neural cross-talk in the dorsal root ganglia, spinal cord and brain levels, which might play a role in the development of chronic pain disorders through central sensitization. In addition, we focus on transient receptor potential V1 and transient receptor potential A1

Projections from the posterolateral olfactory amygdala to the ventral striatum: neural basis for reinforcing properties of chemical stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Vertebrates sense chemical stimuli through the olfactory receptor neurons whose axons project to the main olfactory bulb. The main projections of the olfactory bulb are directed to the olfactory cortex and olfactory amygdala (the anterior and posterolateral cortical amygdalae). The posterolateral cortical amygdaloid nucleus mainly projects to other amygdaloid nuclei; other seemingly minor outputs are directed to the ventral striatum, in particular to the olfactory tubercle and the islands of Calleja. RESULTS: Although the olfactory projections have been previously described in the
