Climate change and Vibrio: Environmental determinants for predictive risk assessment.

Climate change significantly impacts the incidence and abundance of microorganisms, including those essential for environmental cycles and those pathogenic to humans and animals. Shifts in conditions favorable for microbial growth have expanded the geographic range of many pathogens, contributing to the emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases. Waterborne diseases pose severe risks in regions where adverse climate conditions intersect with population vulnerabilities, especially inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure. Since many waterborne pathogens play crucial roles

Molecular insights into the hydrolysis and transglycosylation of a deep-sea Planctomycetota-derived GH16 family laminarinase.

The biochemical and structural characteristics of PtLam, a laminarinase from deep-sea Planctomycetota, have been extensively elucidated, unveiling the fundamental molecular mechanisms governing substrate recognition and enzymatic catalysis. PtLam functions as an exo-laminarinase with the ability to sequentially hydrolyze laminarin, cleaving glucose units individually. Notably, PtLam exhibits proficient transglycosylation capabilities, utilizing various sugar alcohols as acceptors, with lyxose, in particular, yielding exclusively transglycosylated products. Structural analysis of both apo-PtLam

Release of cadmium in contaminated paddy soil amended with NPK fertilizer and lime under water management.

Agricultural soils contaminated with cadmium (Cd) pose a risk to receiving surface water via drainage or runoff. A 90-day laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the release characteristics and transformation of Cd from contaminated paddy soil amended with agrochemical (NPK fertilizer) and lime (L) under water management regimes of continuous flooding (F) and drying-wetting cycles (DW). The result showed that the dissolved Cd concentrations in overlying water of the fertilizer treatment under flooding (NPK+F) and drying-wetting (NPK+DW) reached up to 81.0 μg/L and 276 μg/

Stepwise optimization of a Flexible Microtube Plasma (FµTP) as an ionization source for Ion Mobility Spectrometry.

The ionization source is the central system of analytical devices such as mass spectrometers or ion mobility spectrometers. In this study, a recently developed flexible microtube plasma (FμTP) is applied as an ionization source for a custom-made drift tube ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) for the first time. The FµTP is based on a highly miniaturized, robust and a small-footprint dielectric barrier discharge design with an outstanding ionization efficiency. In this study, the experimental setup of the FµTP was further improved upon to achieve optimal coupling conditions in terms of the ion mobi

Ammonium metabolism in humans.

Free ammonium ions are produced and consumed during cell metabolism. Glutamine synthetase utilizes free ammonium ions to produce glutamine in the cytosol whereas glutaminase and glutamate dehydrogenase generate free ammonium ions in the mitochondria from glutamine and glutamate, respectively. Ammonia and bicarbonate are condensed in the liver mitochondria to yield carbamoylphosphate initiating the urea cycle, the major mechanism of ammonium removal in humans. Healthy kidney produces ammonium which may be released into the systemic circulation or excreted into the urine depending predominantly

Reduced ornithine transcarbamylase activity does not impair ureagenesis in Otc(spf-ash) mice.

Mouse models for urea cycle disorders have been available for the past 30 y; however, until now, no measurements of urea production in vivo have been conducted. Urea entry rate was determined in Otc(spf-ash) and littermate controls employing a primed-continuous infusion of 15N15N urea. A saline infusion control, a complete mixture of amino acids (AA), or a glycine-alanine (GA) mixture was infused at 86 (AA1 and GA1) and 172 mg N.kg(-1).h(-1) (AA2 and GA2) to impose a defined nitrogen load on the urea cycle. Urea entry rate and plasma urea concentration increased (P < 0.001) as a consequence of

Kinetic instabilities during the NO(x) reduction with hydrogen on Pt crystals studied with field emission on the nanoscale.

This paper reviews field emission studies of kinetic instabilities occurring during the catalytic reduction of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) by hydrogen on three-dimensional platinum crystals. Emphasis is placed on revealing that both field ion microscopy (FIM) and field electron microscopy (FEM) can image such instabilities under truly in situ reaction conditions with a lateral resolution on the nanoscale. In particular, oscillatory behavior with rapid ignition from a state of low to a state of high catalytic activity is demonstrated for both NO and NO(2) reduction. Results o

Modulating active sites and reaction pathways: recent progress in photocatalyst design for urea synthesis.

As a cutting-edge direction at the intersection of artificial photosynthesis and green chemistry, photocatalytic synthesis of urea is committed to using solar energy to directly couple CO2 with N2 or NO3- under mild conditions to convert them into high-value urea (CO(NH2)2), providing an innovative path for achieving carbon neutrality and sustainable nitrogen cycling. The core challenges of this reaction lie in the high chemical inertness of CO2 and N2 molecules, the complex multi-electron/proton transfer processes, and the severe constraints on selectivity caused by thermodynamically favorabl

Rhizosheath inhabiting Massilia are linked to heterosis in roots of maize.

Heterosis, or hybrid vigor, describes the superior performance of F1 hybrids compared to parental inbreds. While soil microbiomes are proposed to influence heterosis, it remains unclear how heterotic plants shape their microbiomes and how interactions relate to stress responses. Here, we investigate the role of rhizosheath formation-the soil tightly adhering to roots-in maize heterosis under nitrogen deprivation. Across sterilization, inoculation, and transplantation experiments, hybrids develop larger rhizosheaths than inbreds, and rhizosheath size associates with biomass heterosis. Rhizoshea

A Lecithin Liposome Stimulates Soil Microbial Respiration and Nitrate Immobilization.

Liposomes are microscale lipid vesicles used in pharmaceuticals, food products, and most recently, agriculture. Several studies have shown that liposomes can deliver nutrients to plant leaves, often more efficiently than traditional forms. However, the delivery of plant nutrients to soil via liposomes remains understudied. Interactions between liposomes and soil microbes, including metabolism of the lipid carbon (C) and assimilation of liposome-encapsulated nutrients into soil microbial biomass, could alter the availability of nutrients within the soil. We assessed the impact of lecithin lipos

Ammonium and organic carbon co-removal under Feammox heterotrophic conditions at low Fe3+ concentrations.

Feammox, the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium coupled to Fe3+ reduction, offers a promising alternative for nitrogen removal under low-oxygen and high-organic load conditions. In this study, Feammox was successfully enriched from Anammox sludge by adjusting environmental conditions. Ammonium and organic carbon were co-removed at low Fe3+ concentrations (200 mg/L), indicating that Feammox can operate under heterotrophic conditions. Ferrous iron generation, XRD analysis, and PCR amplification of functional genes (nirK, narG, nxrA) support the occurrence of Feammox and iron cycling. Key microorgan

Genome-resolved metagenomics identifies novel active microbes in biogeochemical cycling within methanol-enriched soil.

Metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs), generated from sequenced 13C-labelled DNA from 13C-methanol enriched soils, were binned using an ensemble approach. This method produced a significantly larger number of higher-quality MAGs compared to direct binning approaches. These MAGs represent both the primary methanol utilizers and the secondary utilizers labelled via cross-feeding and predation on the labelled methylotrophs, including numerous uncultivated taxa. Analysis of these MAGs enabled the identification of multiple metabolic pathways within these active taxa that have climatic relevance rela

Gaseous Nitrogen Oxides Catholyte for Rechargeable Redox Flow Batteries.

There is a strong interest in finding highly soluble redox compounds to improve the energy density of redox flow batteries (RFBs). However, the performance of electrolytes is often negatively influenced by high solute concentration. Herein, we designed a high-potential (0.5 V vs. Ag/Ag+ ) catholyte for RFBs, where the charged and discharged species are both gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx ). These species can be liberated from the liquid electrolyte and stored in a separate gas container, allowing scale-up of storage capacity without increasing the concentration and volume of the electrolyte. Tailoring Properties of Resol Resin-Derived Spherical Carbons for Adsorption of Phenol from Aqueous Solution.

The polycondensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde in a water-ethanol mixture using the adapted Stöber method was used to obtain resol resins. An optimization of synthesis conditions and the use of an appropriate stabilizer (e.g., poly(vinyl alcohol)) resulted in spherical grains. The resins were carbonized in the temperature range of 600-1050 °C and then chemically activated in an aqueous HNO3 solution, gaseous ammonia, or by an oxidation-reduction cycle (soaking in a HNO3 solution followed by treatment with NH3). The obtained carbons were characterized by XRD, the low-temperature adsorption

Cationic Phosphorus Compounds Based on a Bis(1-piperidinyl)-Substituted Carbodiphosphorane: Syntheses, Structures, and Csp3 -H Activation.

The use of the bis(1-piperidinyl)-substituted carbodiphosphorane (Ph2(Pip)P)2C (1) as an NCN ligand for the stabilization of phosphorus cations was studied. A simple ligand for halide exchange allowed the synthesis and isolation of a series of phosphorus monocations of the type [1-PR2]+ (with R = Cl, Br, I, CyCl, Ph). These cations exhibit characteristic NMR and structural properties which nicely correlate with the charge at the central phosphorus atom and the interaction between the ligand and the PR2 moiety. Halide abstraction from the monocations does not result in isolable dicationic compo

A Quick Review of Redox State in Cancer: Focus to Bladder.

A cell is dying when there is no repair after damage. Indeed, the etiology of cancers associates with damaged or unrepaired cells. Cancer results from imbalance between cell's oxidant and antioxidant defenses. This study aimed to review formation of cancer associated to oxidative stress. Tumorgenesis is caused by deregulation of the redox homeostasis by reactive oxygen species that stimulate the formation of tumor by starting an abnormal introduction of signaling nets. Proliferation accompanied by uncontrolled growth could lead to development of mass cancer cells. Kinases/phosphatases, transcr

Graphene Oxide Hybrid with Sulfur-Nitrogen Polymer for High-Performance Pseudocapacitors.

Toward the introduction of fast faradaic pseudocapacitive behavior and the increase of the specific capacitance of carbon-based electrodes, we covalently functionalized graphene oxide with a redox active thiourea-formaldehyde polymer, yielding a multifunctional hybrid system. The multiscale physical and chemical characterization of the novel 3-dimensional hybrid revealed high material porosity with high specific surface area (402 m2 g-1) and homogeneous element distribution. The presence of multiple functional groups comprising sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen provide additional contribution of Fa

Characteristics of Three-Dimensional Pore-Fracture Network Development and Enhanced Seepage Heat Transfer in Hot Dry Rock Stimulated by Temperature Shock Effects.

Hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal is a sustainable and clean energy source. However, its development progress is hindered by creating seepage channels in deep reservoirs with low porosity and permeability. Traditional hydraulic fracturing techniques are ineffective for enhancing the permeability of these high-strength reservoirs. To address this, a cyclic nitrogen injection technique was proposed, which leverages the thermal gradients of the hot reservoir to stimulate a complex thermally induced fracture network. To study the three-dimensional pore-fracture structure and the flow characteristic of
