Dietary polyphenol intake in the prevention and management of diabetes mellitus: a systematic review of observational studies.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major clinical and public health concern because of its high population burden. Clinical trials report promising antidiabetic effects of dietary polyphenols using supplementation. This systematic review investigated habitual-level polyphenol intake associations in observational studies for pre-, type 1, type 2, and gestational DM prevention and management. This review aimed to evaluate whether these associations may have implications for public health nutrition guidance. Database searches were last conducted in January 2025. Only articles available in English were c

Prognosis of Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review of Contemporary Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is uncommon but increasingly encountered as more women delay childbearing. Its prognostic impact remains controversial, particularly for cancers diagnosed in the early postpartum period. We aimed to synthesize contemporary evidence on the prognosis of breast cancer diagnosed during pregnancy or within 12 months after delivery compared with breast cancer in other young women, with a specific focus on differences between pregnancy time and postpartum disease. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of observational studies publi

Short-and long-term responsiveness of deep brain stimulation on motor and cognitive outcomes in GBA vs. Non-GBA parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapy for motor complications in Parkinson's disease (PD). Patients carrying glucocerebrosidase (GBA) mutations exhibit distinct disease trajectories, raising questions regarding potential differences in clinical outcomes following DBS compared with non-carriers. To evaluate short- and long-term motor, medication, and cognitive outcomes following DBS in patients with GBA-PD compared with non-GBA PD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting clinical outcomes in PD patients with and without GBA mutations who underwen

A scoping review of real-world evidence generation methods to estimate the safety of type 2 diabetes medications on fracture risk.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies provide real-world evidence (RWE) about the long-term effectiveness and rare side effects of medications. However, conflicting results from RWE studies exist regarding the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) medications and fracture risk. The objective of this scoping review was to summarize RWE methods employed to estimate the effect of T2DM medication on fracture risk. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE (OVID), Embase (OVID), and CINAHL (EBSCO) databases for full-text articles published between January 2000 and December 2022 in English and conduc

Confounder adjustment in observational studies investigating multiple risk factors: a methodological study.

BACKGROUND: Confounder adjustment is critical for accurate causal inference in observational studies. However, the appropriateness of methods for confounder adjustment in studies investigating multiple risk factors, where the factors are not simply mutually confounded, is often overlooked. This study aims to summarise the methods for confounder adjustment and the related issues in studies investigating multiple risk factors. METHODS: A methodological study was performed. We searched PubMed from January 2018 to March 2023 to identify cohort and case-control studies investigating multiple risk

Bidirectional association between cognitive impairment and bone mineral density reduction in aging populations: A systematic review and meta-analysis of osteoporosis, osteopenia, and bone mineral content.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD), increasing fracture risk. Cognitive disorders (CD), including Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), cause cognitive decline and are prevalent among older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis explores the bidirectional association between cognitive impairment and bone health, specifically low BMD, osteopenia, and osteoporosis. Comprehensive searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library through August 15, 2024. Eligible observational studies ass

Higher dietary fish consumption is associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

While numerous epidemiological studies have investigated the relationship between fish consumption and osteoporosis risk, findings remain inconclusive. This meta-analysis hypothesizes that higher fish intake is associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Wan Fang was conducted for relevant studies published up to October 2024. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using fixed or random effects models based on heterogeneity. Fourteen studies comprising 26,145 participants were included. Comprehensive observational study evaluating the enduring effectiveness of 4CMenB, the meningococcal B vaccine against gonococcal infections in the Northern Territory and South Australia, Australia: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of antibiotics for treating gonococcal infections is compromised due to escalating antibiotic resistance; and the development of an effective gonococcal vaccine has been challenging. Emerging evidence suggests that the licensed meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine, 4CMenB is effective against gonococcal infections due to cross-reacting antibodies and 95% genetic homology between the two bacteria, Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, that cause the diseases. This project aims to undertake epidemiological and genomic surveillance to evaluate the long-term p

Study protocol: how does parental stress measured by clinical scales and voice acoustic stress markers predict children's response to PTSD trauma-focused therapies?

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in youth are influenced by parental anxiety and stress. When parents have high levels of stress or have developed PTSD themselves, children tend to show more anxiety symptoms. Parental stress can affect the severity of children's PTSD and lower the success of recovery. However, the influence of parental stress on the effectiveness of trauma-focused therapies (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing and cognitive behavioural therapy) has not yet been investigated to our knowledge. Hence, we will measure parental stress (using bo
