[Lateralization in dissociated vertical deviation with flash visual evoked potentials].

Lateralization, suggesting misrouting of optic nerve fibers in albinism, was examined by the flash visual evoked potentials (flash VEP) test in dissociated vertical deviation (DVD). Eighteen cases of DVD were studied and compared with 5 cases of X-recessive ocular albinism and 4 normal controls. Full-field monocular and binocular stimulation was employed with electroencepharograph electrodes on O1 and O2 (10/20 system), and the latency of P100 was statistically analysed with two-way analysis of variance. The difference in the P100 latency between contralateral and ipsilateral stimulation was s

Facile synthesis strategy for cesium tin halide perovskite crystals toward light emitting devices and anti-counterfeiting flexible fiber.

All-inorganic metal halide perovskites are widely studied because of their excellent photoelectric properties. However, due to the toxicity of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskites, it is difficult to apply them on a large scale. The lead-free nature and air stability make Cs2SnX6 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskites possible candidates to replace CsPbX3 perovskites. Herein, we report the perovskite crystals (PCs) based on Te(IV)-doped Cs2SnCl6: Cs2Sn1-xTexCl6. Cs2Sn1-xTexCl6 PCs showed yellow emission under a 365 nm ultraviolet lamp. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of Cs2Sn0.94Te0.06Cl6 PCs wa

Depth-resolved fiber photometry of amyloid plaque signals in freely behaving Alzheimer's disease mice.

SIGNIFICANCE: Current preclinical evaluation of Alzheimer's disease pathology in mouse models relies on post-mortem analyses, which hinders the development and optimization of therapeutic approaches. Although in vivo methods exist, monitoring amyloid plaque signals across multiple brain regions in freely behaving animals remains a significant challenge. AIM: We aim to develop an optical approach to address this challenge. APPROACH: We used flat and tapered optical fibers in an Alzheimer's mouse model. RESULTS: We first confirmed that conventional flat fiber-based photometry can detect amylo…

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) in optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique routinely used in ophthalmology to visualize and quantify the layers of the retina. It also provides information on optic nerve head topography, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, and macular volume, which correlate with axonal loss. These measurements are of particular interest in optic neuropathies and in multiple sclerosis, and OCT parameters are now used as endpoints in neurologic clinical trials.

Peripapillary choroidal microvasculature dropout is associated with poor prognosis in optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To identify peripapillary choroidal microvasculature dropout (MvD) in eyes with optic neuritis and its association with longitudinal changes in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIP) thicknesses following diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 48 eyes with optic neuritis was evaluated to identify the presence of peripapillary choroidal MvD, defined as a focal capillary loss with no visible microvascular network in choroidal layer, using optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography (OCTA). Patients were divided based on the presence of MvD. OCT and s

Wavelength control of random polymer fiber laser based on adaptive disorder.

We demonstrate the realization of two different kinds of random polymer optical fiber lasers to control the random lasing wavelength by changing the disorder of polymer optical fibers (POFs). One is a long-range disorder POF based on copolymer refractive-index inhomogeneity, and the other is a short-range disorder POF based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes scattering. By end pumped both disorder POFs, the coherent random lasing for both is observed. Meanwhile, the random lasing wavelength of the short-range disorder POF because of a small scattering mean-free path has been found to be …

Design of a multi-beam optical antenna using a conical laser array and an H-H lens array and analysis of coupling efficiency.

An optical antenna structure consisting of a conical laser array and a hyperboloid-hyperboloid (H-H) lens array is proposed to circumvent the central obscuration problem in Cassegrain antennas and to enable the simultaneous transmission and optical fiber coupling of multi-wavelength beams through a common antenna primary mirror. The design process of the conical laser array and H-H lens array combination, as well as the effects of various parameters on crosstalk between beams, is systematically analyzed, and ray-tracing simulations of beam propagation through the H-H lens array, the Cassegrain

[Pathogenetic basis of optic nerve atrophy in methanol poisoning].

Optic nerve atrophy is a pathomorphological consequence of diseases of the peripheral neuron of the visual pathway, manifested as atrophy of nerve fibers of varying severity. The toxic effect of methanol is mainly associated with formic acid and formaldehyde, which suppress the cytochrome system, inhibit oxidative phosphorylation, and thereby cause a deficiency of adenosine triphosphoric acid, to which brain and retinal tissues are especially susceptible. When formiate accumulates, tissue respiration is disrupted, leading to pronounced tissue hypoxia. As a result of such methanol metabolism, m

Enhanced photocoagulation with catheter-based diffusing optical device.

A novel balloon catheter-based diffusing optical device was designed and evaluated to assist in treating excessive menstrual bleeding. A synthetic fused-silica fiber was micro-machined precisely to create scattering segments on a 25 mm long fiber tip for uniform light distribution. A visible wavelength (λ=532  nm) was used to specifically target the endometrium due to the high vascularity of the uterine wall. Optical simulation presented 30% wider distribution of photons along with approximately 40% higher irradiance induced by addition of a glass cap to the diffuser tip. Incorporation of the

Finger-mounted quantitative micro-elastography.

We present a finger-mounted quantitative micro-elastography (QME) probe, capable of measuring the elasticity of biological tissue in a format that avails of the dexterity of the human finger. Finger-mounted QME represents the first demonstration of a wearable elastography probe. The approach realizes optical coherence tomography-based elastography by focusing the optical beam into the sample via a single-mode fiber that is fused to a length of graded-index fiber. The fiber is rigidly affixed to a 3D-printed thimble that is mounted on the finger. Analogous to manual palpation, the probe compres

Histochemical localization of acetylcholinesterase in the lateral eye and brain of Limulus polyphemus: might acetylcholine be a neurotransmitter for lateral inhibition in the lateral eye?

The distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the lateral eye and brain of the horseshoe crab was investigated with histochemical means using standard controls to eliminate butyrylcholinesterase and nonspecific staining. Intense staining was observed in the neural plexus of the lateral compound eye, in the lateral optic nerve, and in various neuropils of the brain. Nerve fibers with moderate to weak staining were widespread in the brain. No somata were stained in either the lateral eye or the brain. The distribution of acetylcholinesterase in the supraesophageal ganglia and nerves of the

Thickness measurements taken with the spectralis OCT increase with decreasing signal strength.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used worldwide by clinicians to evaluate macular and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) characteristics. It is frequently utilized to assess disease severity, progression and efficacy of treatment, and therefore must be reliable and reproducible. OBJECTIVE: To examine the influence of signal strength on macular thickness parameters, macular volume measurement and RNFL thickness measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: Macular thickness parameters, macular volume measurement and RNFL thickness were measured by

Relationship Between Flicker Modulation Sensitivity and Retinal Ganglion Cell Related Layer Thicknesses.

PURPOSE: Early detection of structural changes in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and corresponding changes in visual function is important in early degenerative diseases of the retina, but the sensitivity of both measurements is limited by the inherent variability in healthy subjects. This study investigates the relationships between RGC-related layer thicknesses and foveal and parafoveal flicker modulation sensitivity (FMS) across photopic and mesopic light levels in healthy subjects. METHODS: Photopic and mesopic FMS was measured in 56 young adults, at the point of fixation and at an eccentr

Advances in bio-tactile sensors for minimally invasive surgery using the fibre Bragg grating force sensor technique: a survey.

The large interest in utilising fibre Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) applications to replace conventional electrical tactile sensors has grown in the past few years. FBG strain sensors offer the advantages of optical fibre sensors, such as high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic noise, electrical passivity and chemical inertness, but are not limited by phase discontinuity or intensity fluctuations. FBG sensors feature a wavelength-encoding sensing signal that enables distributed sensing that utilises fewer connections. In addition, their flexibili

Morphological differences of the neuroretinal rim between temporally tilted and non-tilted optic discs in healthy eyes.

This study aimed to compare morphological differences of the neuroretinal rim between the temporally tilted and non-tilted optic discs in healthy eyes. We prospectively enrolled participants aged 20-40 years with temporally tilted or non-tilted optic discs. The optic nerve head parameters were analyzed using spectral domain-optical coherence tomography. The angle between the Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) plane and BMO-minimum rim width (BMO-MRW) was termed "BMO-MRW angle". Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (pRNFLT) and BMO-based parameters were compared between the temporally

Do peripheral nerve extracts protect retinal ganglion cells from axotomy-induced death?

PURPOSE: Study the effect of peripheral nerve extracts and BDNF on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) regeneration in adult rats. METHODS: Postmicrosomal fractions were obtained from 7-day, predegenerated, as well as non-predegenerated peripheral adult rats nerves. Autologous connective tissue chambers filled with fibrin were implanted into a gap-injury site in the optic nerve. Chambers contained either fibrin, the fractions, or BDNF. RGCs retrogradely labeled with DiI were counted, the distance covered by regrowing fibers traced with rhodamine B was measured, and number of myelinated fibers in the

Matrix symmetry and normality in multimode fiber transport.

Multimode fibers (MMFs) support high-dimensional optical transport within a compact form factor, with growing applications in biomedical imaging, telecommunications, and quantum engineering. Realizing this potential requires accurate knowledge of the fiber transmission matrix (TM); yet experimentally measured TMs are often corrupted by system-level distortions that obscure the underlying modal physics and limit wavefront control. Here, we show that the reciprocity of optical waves imposes symmetry constraints that provide self-consistency conditions for identifying and correcting such distorti

On the dual crosslinking for functionality enhancement of poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/chitosan-aluminum (III) ions and its characterization and sensory hydrogel fibers.

In this report, we present a dual crosslinking hydrogel fiber made from polyamine saccharides chitosan (CS), synthesized through UV polymerization. This process utilizes Irgacure 2959 and N,N'-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) as initiators, followed by immersion in an aluminum chloride (AlCl3) solution. The resulting hydrogel incorporates a dual crosslinking mechanism, quantitatively studied via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This mechanism involves chemical crosslinking through radical graft polymerization of acrylamide and acrylic acid onto CS in the presence of MBAA, and physic
