Feature Decoupling for Multimodal Locomotion and Estimation of Knee and Ankle Angles Implemented by Multi-Model Fusion.

Many challenges exist in the study of using orthotics, exoskeletons or exosuits as tools for rehabilitation and assistance of healthy people in daily activities due to the requirements of portability and safe interaction with the user and the environment. One approach to dealing with these challenges is to design a control system that can be deployed in a portable device to identify the relationships that exist between the gait variables and gait cycle for different locomotion modes. In order to estimate the knee and ankle angles in the sagittal plane for different locomotion modes, a novel mu

Low back pain sufferers: is standing postural balance facilitated by a lordotic lumbar brace?

INTRODUCTION: The use of a lumbar lordosis orthotic device in the treatment of discogenic low back pain could be a valuable option and rehabilitation tool. The lumbar lordosis brace has been designed to meet these requirements and acts as a reminder to the patient to maintain a physiological lumbar lordosis curvature since it comprises a vertical panel on the chest and a curved rigid shell at the back. This lumbar lordosis brace exerts the necessary degree of compression in the lumbar region and achieves correction of the sagittal plane spine balance to improve postural control of the lumbar s

[Doubts and confusions in the diagnosis and treatment of positional plagiocephaly. Management protocol].

INTRODUCTION: Positional plagiocephaly is currently the most frequent cause of consultation at pediatric neurosurgical departments in Spain and other western countries. There is considerable confusion in the literature on the terminology and physiopathology of this deformity, as well as its differential diagnosis with true synostosis and treatment recommendations. OBJECTIVES: To clarify these concepts and present a protocol for the management of positional plagiocephaly, which was recently requested by the Health Administration of the Community of Madrid. PROTOCOL: The protocol aims to achie

Current landscape for the management of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy and emerging treatment modalities: A literature review.

Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness, primarily affecting the facial, shoulder, and upper arm muscles. In this literature review, we examined the available treatments for FSHD, covering established methods and experimental approaches. We began with an overview of pharmacological treatments, emphasizing the importance of physical therapy and rehabilitation in maintaining muscle strength, improving mobility, preventing contractures, and respiratory therapy for severe cases. We also explored exercise interventions, addres

Regression of cephalic index following endoscopic repair of sagittal synostosis.

OBJECTIVEMetrics used to quantify preoperative severity and postoperative outcomes for patients with sagittal synostosis include cephalic index (CI), the well-known standard, and the recently described adjusted cephalic index (aCI), which accounts for altered euryon location. This study tracks the time course of these measures following endoscopic repair with orthotic helmet therapy. The authors hypothesize that CI and aCI show significant regression following endoscope-assisted repair.METHODSCT scans or 3D photographs of patients with nonsyndromic sagittal synostosis treated before 6 months o

What is the optimal time to start helmet therapy in positional plagiocephaly?

BACKGROUND: Although helmet therapy is widely accepted in the treatment of severe positional plagiocephaly, treatment regimens, especially regarding starting age, are controversial. This study investigated the importance of starting age to optimize the management of helmet therapy. METHODS: Sixty-two infants with severe positional plagiocephaly were enrolled in this prospective longitudinal study. Twenty-four started helmet therapy before 6 months of age (group 1) and 38 were older than 6 months (group 2). Cranial diagonal measurements were taken. Resulting differences and Cranial Vault Asymm

Comparison of perceptions and treatment practices between neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons for infants with deformational plagiocephaly.

OBJECT: Deformational plagiocephaly (DP) is the leading cause of head shape abnormalities in infants. Treatment options include conservative measures and cranial molding. Pediatric neurosurgeons and craniofacial plastic surgeons have yet to agree on an ideal therapy, and no definable standards exist for initiating treatment with helmets. Furthermore, there may be differences between specialties in their perceptions of DP severity and need for helmet therapy. METHODS: Requests to participate in a web-based questionnaire were sent to diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Su

Molding helmet therapy in the management of sagittal synostosis.

The current surgical treatment of sagittal craniosynostosis often fails to produce a normal cephalic index; however, recent reports of early endoscopic suture release and postoperative helmet therapy promise improved cranial symmetry. The role of helmet therapy is critical in this approach, but there are few reports on the use of helmet therapy after craniosynostosis surgery. The authors present a retrospective review comparing the results of surgery alone versus surgery and postoperative banding in treating children diagnosed with sagittal synostosis. Cephalic index (CI) measurements and the

Rethinking Farkas: Updating Cephalic Index Norms in a Large, Diverse Population.

BACKGROUND: Cephalic index, the ratio of head width to length, is one normative indicator used by insurers to derive criteria for plagiocephaly helmet authorization. Current norms were established by a small sample of white children in the 1987 Farkas and Munro data set. This study establishes updated cephalic index values for infants and children in a large, diverse patient population. METHODS: Children aged 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6 months, 9 to 12 months, 2 to 3 years, and 12 to 14 years were recruited at their well-child appointment. Cephalic index was calculated for each age group and compar

Complications associated with molding helmet therapy for positional plagiocephaly: a review.

Molding helmet therapy is a widely accepted treatment for positional plagiocephaly that is generally considered to be low risk. Multiple large outcome studies have shown good results, but adverse events are rarely reported. The literature on helmet therapy was reviewed to clarify the clinical experience with associated complications. Although significant complications were extremely rare, there was a large degree of variability in detection of lesser problems such as minor skin irritation. Patients with a primarily brachycephalic morphology may be at higher risk for poorly fitting orthoses. Mo

Impedance-Controlled Knee Orthosis: Transitional Movements and their Effect on Knee Kinematics and Muscular Activity.

This study investigated the effects of an impedance-controlled active knee orthosis on knee kinematics and muscle activation during transitional movements, focusing on Sit-To-Stand and Step-Up tasks. A custom hardware and software setup employed an EMG-driven impedance controller to modulate joint stiffness real-time. Four healthy participants performed Sit-To-Stand and Step-Up tasks under assisted and non-assisted conditions. The results indicated that the orthosis reduced muscle activity in stable, bilateral tasks like Sit-To-Stand, leading to lower average EMG amplitudes in the assisted leg
