Osteo-articular tuberculosis: its presentation in coloured races.

Four hundred and ninety-nine cases of osteo-articular tuberculosis have been analysed with special emphasis on the "unusual" presentation. Sclerotic bone reaction in association with active tuberculous osteitis is not at all uncommon and may occur in any affected bone. Maintenance of disc spaces with tuberculous spondylitis is not uncommon. Periosteal reactions, often very gross, occur commonly both in multicystic tuberculosis as well as in isolated lesions. Multiple bone involvement occurred in 8.2% of this series. Tomography delineates the total extent of involvement especially in central in

Erdheim-Chester Disease with Breast and Axillary Involvement Diagnosed by Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background/Objectives: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by multisystem infiltration o … hoic lesions with axillary involvement on ultrasound. In patients with chronic bone pain, symmetric osteosclerosis, or multisystem disease, ECD should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Ultrasound-detected superficial lesions may provide accessible biopsy targets, helping to establish a timely diagnosis and reduce diagnostic delay.

Evaluating femoral head collapse risk post-fixation removal: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures are prevalent in orthopedic injuries, often leading to complications such as nonunion and osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Studies indicate that after healing and removal of internal fixation devices, some patients develop ONFH, while others experience osteosclerosis around the screw holes due to prolonged fixation, increasing ONFH risk. Despite such observations, biomechanical studies on this phenomenon are limited. This study assesses the risk of femoral head collapse post-internal fixation device removal and investigates the biomechanical effects …

Diagnosis of skull-base invasion by nasopharyngeal tumors on CT with a deep-learning approach.

PURPOSE: To develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to diagnose skull-base invasion by nasopharyngeal malignancies in CT images a … gative cases were present predominantly in bone marrow, while the invasion-positive cases exhibited osteosclerosis and nasopharyngeal masses. CONCLUSIONS: This CNN technique would be useful for CT-based diagnosis of skull-base invasion by nasopharyngeal malignancies.

P-Selectin Sustains Extramedullary Hematopoiesis in the Gata1 low Model of Myelofibrosis.

Splenomegaly is a major manifestation of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) contributing to clinical symptoms and hematologic abnormalities. The sp … and lived 3 months longer than P-sel(WT) Gata1(low) littermates and expressed limited fibrosis and osteosclerosis in the marrow or splenomegaly. Furthermore, deletion of P-sel disrupted megakaryocyte/neutrophil interactions in spleen, reduced TGF-β content, and corrected the HSC distribution that in Gata1(low) mice, as in PMF patients, is abnormally expanded in …

Deficiency of SHP-1 protein-tyrosine phosphatase activity results in heightened osteoclast function and decreased bone density.

Mice homozygous for the motheaten (Hcphme) or viable motheaten (Hcphme-v) mutations are deficient in functional SHP-1 protein-tyrosine phosp … sed size in the presence of CSF-1. CSF-1-deficient osteopetrosis (op/op) mutant mice develop severe osteosclerosis. However, doubly homozygous mev/mevop/op mice show an expansion of bone marrow cavities and reduced trabecular bone mass compared with op/op mice. Western blot analysis showed that several proteins that were markedly hyperphosphorylated on tyrosine …

Structural and histomorphometric studies of iliac crest trabecular and cortical bone in autosomal dominant osteopetrosis: a study of two radiological types.

Cylindrical iliac crest biopsies were obtained from 16 patients with autosomal dominant osteopetrosis after intravital double labeling with tetracycline, and compared with normal age- and sex-matched controls. Ten patients had the radiological type I (5 women, 5 men, aged 17-62 years, mean 42) characterized by diffuse, symmetrical osteosclerosis and enlarged thickness of the cranial vault. Six patients had type II (2 women, 4 men, aged 22-44 years, mean 36), where "Rugger Jersey Spine" and endobone are characteristic findings. Structural studies of cortical and trabecular bone were performed, …

Pycnodysostosis With Papilledema and Isolated Low Parathyroid Hormone Levels in an Eight-Year-Old Girl: A Genetically Confirmed Case Report.

Pycnodysostosis is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia resulting from pathogenic variants in the CTSK gene, which encodes cathepsin K, a lysosomal cysteine protease expressed in osteoclasts. Deficiency of this enzyme leads to defective bone resorption and generalized osteosclerosis. We report an 8-year-old girl, the firstborn of a third-degree consanguineous marriage, who presented with poor height and weight gain since birth and delayed developmental milestones, including independent walking at 2 years of age. Physical examination revealed proportionate short stature with microcepha…

miR-146a-/- mice model reveals that NF-κB inhibition reverts inflammation-driven myelofibrosis-like phenotype.

Emerging evidence shows the crucial role of inflammation (particularly NF-κB pathway) in the development and progression of myelofibrosis (M … pacritinib, resulted in a reduction of extramedullary hematopoiesis, bone marrow (BM) fibrosis and osteosclerosis, along with an attenuation of the exacerbated inflammatory state (via IL-1β and TNFα). However, although dual inhibitor improved anemia and reversed thrombocytopenia, the combined therapy worsened anemia by inducing BM hypoplasia. Both therapeutic o …

Evidence for Thalamic Responsive Neurostimulation in Treatment of Adult and Pediatric Epilepsy.

Responsive neurostimulation (RNS) has well-established efficacy in patients with identifiable seizure foci. Emerging evidence suggests the feasibility of expanding this treatment to patients with nonfocal or multifocal epileptic profiles with thalamic targeting. Our institution performed two successful implantations of thalamic RNS (tRNS) targeting the centromedian nucleus of the thalamus (CMT), and 1-year postoperative outcomes are provided. Additionally, a literature review of all reported tRNS was conducted. Publications were excluded if they did not include demographic data and/or epilepsy
