Association Between Relative Cord Hyperleptinemia and Offspring Outcomes in Pregnant Women With Overweight or Obesity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Umbilical cord leptin is increased in infants of women with obesity. We tested the hypothesis that a high cord leptin-to-fat mass ratio might be associated with adverse outcomes at birth and in early childhood. METHODS: A secondary analysis of vitamin D And Lifestyle Intervention for gestational diabetes mellitus prevention (DALI) trial was conducted. Cord leptin-to-fat mass ratios were classified into top (TT), middle, and low (LT) tertiles overall and within sexes. Relationship with neonatal outcomes and offspring BMI z-scores were compared between TT and LT groups.

Maternal fat-soluble vitamin trajectories and infant birth weight in individuals with overweight or obesity.

BACKGROUND: Birth weight is a strong determinant of long-term metabolic health, with both low birth weight and macrosomia linked to increased cardiometabolic risk. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E modulate pathways relevant to fetal growth, however, their trajectories and potential associations with birth weight in pregnant individuals with overweight or obesity remain scarcely characterized. OBJECTIVE: To examine maternal vitamins A (retinol), D (25(OH)D), and E (α-tocopherol) concentrations during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and their associations with birth weight, in indi…

Subclinical left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in adults with overweight or obesity and preserved ejection fraction.

BACKGROUND: Excess adiposity exerts haemodynamic, metabolic, and inflammatory effects on the myocardium that can produce left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) before systolic function is impaired. South Asian adults are susceptible at lower body mass index (BMI) thresholds, yet evidence on subclinical LVDD in otherwise healthy adults with overweight or obesity is limited. METHODS: Tertiary care hospital-based, cross-sectional study (June 2024-February 2026). 72 adults were enrolled aged 18-65 years with BMI ≥23 kg/m2 (Asian cut-offs) and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (L…

Overweight and obesity: A second functional burden that amplifies gait vulnerability in early multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Overweight and obesity (OW/OB) are prevalent in patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) from disease onset and are associated with faster disease progression. While gait impairment is one of the most disabling symptoms of MS, the impact of OW/OB on gait in PwMS remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of OW/OB on gait parameters in PwMS with low disability. METHODS: In this exploratory prospective study, PwMS with low disability (EDSS < 4) were recruited during routine MS follow-up consultations between 2021 and 2025. Participants underwent a clinical asses…

Profiling the metabolome of older adults who live with overweight/obesity and undiagnosed cognitive impairment.

Cognitive impairment (CI), ranging from mild impairment to dementia, is highly undiagnosed in the elderly population. In this population, the association between anthropometric parameters [waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI)] and CI is uncertain. Additionally, it is unknown whether peripheral metabolic alterations associated with cognitive dysfunction are present in older adults who are unaware of their CI diagnosis. The objective of this study was to fill these gaps by recruiting 29 older Peruvian adults who reported being in good mental and physical health to evaluate their co
