Two noninvasive methods of estimating arterial oxygenation were compared in a group of 48 infants ranging in birth weight from 870 to 4,000 gm, with diagnoses including apnea of prematurity, hyaline membrane disease, meconium aspiration, and congenital heart disease. Both transcutaneous oxygen measurements and ear oximetry gave reasonably accurate estimations of arterial oxygen levels within commonly used clinical ranges (PO2 50 to 70 mm Hg, arterial saturation 90 to 98%). Hypoxemia is a frequent occurrence in patients with severe hepatic disease. Multiple mechanisms have been implicated in the production of such hypoxemia. The case of a 35-year-old man with cyanosis, clubbing, and cirrhosis is presented. Physiologic data from this patient revealed normal pulmonary function, except for a low diffusing capacity and a 28 percent shunt while the patient was breathing 100 percent oxygen. Five captive elk (cervus canadensis) were immobilized with a mixture of etorphine HC1-acepromazine maleate, and measurements were taken of selected oxygen transport paraments. Heart mass/body mass, hematocrit, hemoglobin, blood volume, mean corpuscular volume and airway resistance were measured and the values compared to other ungulates. It was concluded that the O2 transport system of elk is not as well developed as that in pronghorn but is superior to that found in the goat or ox.

With the use of mechanical phosphoroscopes the photoinduced luminescence of singlet oxygen (1270 nm) have been found in air saturated solutions of chlorophyll a, bacteriochlorophyll a, protochlorophyll and pheophytins in CCl4, CS2, and freon 112. The excitation spectra of the luminescence coincide with the absorption spectra of the pigments. Untreated gas gangrene is a fulminating infection that can lead to extensive tissue necrosis and death. Hyperbaric oxygen, when used with antibiotics and surgical debridement, can lead to decreased mortality. Nine patients with gas gangrene proven by positive clostridial cultures have been treated at St Luke's Hospital of Kansas City with a mortality of 11.1%. A case of gas gangrene developing from a perirectal abscess is presented.

Arterial oxygen tensions were determined in 35 supine unpremedicated surgical patients. Correlations were sought for age, weight, and weight/height, and Pao2. A definite, clear cut linear reduction of Po2 with age was found but not for weight alone. A relationship with weight/height ratio was found. Chemical cyanosis is an oxygen transport deficiency produced by exposure to aromatic nitro- or animo-compounds. Evaluation of its severity by methemoglobin determinations defines the problem incompletely and is time consuming. Twenty-nine patients were studied over a five-year period by both methemoglobin level using classical laboratory methods and oxygen saturation level, using a reflection oximeter. A patient was successfully treated with hyperbaric oxygen for chronic osteomyelitis of the mandible associated with osteopetrosis. This mode of therapy appears to have a definite place in the management of such patients.
