The effects of left and right monocular viewing on hemispheric activation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Prior research has revealed that whereas activation of the left hemisphere primarily increases the activity of the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system, right-hemisphere activation increases the activity of the sympathetic division. In addition, each hemisphere primarily receives retinocollicular projections from the contralateral eye. A prior study reported that pupillary dilation was greater with left- than with right-eye monocular viewing. The goal of this study was to test the alternative hypotheses that this asymmetric pupil dilation with left-ey

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation reduces sympathetic preponderance in patients with tinnitus.

CONCLUSION: Transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS) might offer a targeted, patient-friendly, and low-cost therapeutic tool for tinnitus patients with sympathovagal imbalance. OBJECTIVES: Conventionally, VNS has been performed to treat severe epilepsy and depression with an electrode implanted to the cervical trunk of vagus nerve. This study investigated the acute effects of tVNS on autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance, which often occurs in patients with tinnitus-triggered stress. METHODS: This study retrospectively analysed records of 97 patients who had undergone ANS function te

Proposal for mechanisms of protection of supine sleep against sudden infant death syndrome: an integrated mechanism review.

UNLABELLED: Supine sleep decreases sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) incidence, however the mechanisms for this are unclear. The triple risk model for SIDS requires that one or more underlying abnormalities of breathing or autonomic control are present; these are rare, but brainstem defects are found in most SIDS cases. Supine sleep increases sympathetic nervous system tone, and level of state organization, and may therefore act as a stressor. This is evidenced by physiological arousal, and by delayed neurodevelopment in supine compared to prone sleepers. It is argued here that prone sleep p

Cholinergic nerve fibers in bone defects of a rat osteoporosis model and their regulation by implantation of bone substitution materials.

OBJECTIVES: Bone is innervated by autonomic nervous system that consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves that were recently identified in bone. Thus we asked whether parasympathetic nerves occur in bone defects and at the interface of substitution materials that were implanted for stabilization and improvement of healing in an osteoporosis animal model. METHODS: Osteoporosis was induced in rats by ovariectomy and deficiency diet. A wedge-shaped osteotomy was performed in the metaphyseal area of femur. Eight different implants were inserted that were based on calcium phosphate cement

Autonomic dysfunction in ALS: a preliminary study on the effects of intrathecal BDNF.

This pilot study aimed at exploring the effects of intrathecally administered brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on autonomic functions in patients with ALS. A battery of autonomic sympathetic and parasympathetic tests was performed at baseline and after nine months of treatment in 10 ALS patients participating in a double-blind placebo-controlled phase II/III study of intrathecally administered BDNF. Results of patients treated with BDNF (25 or 150 microg/day) were compared to those receiving placebo. Sudomotor function and blood pressure response to handgrip significantly worsened duri

Orthostatic hypotension in aging humans.

We tested the hypothesis that hypotension occurred in older adults at the onset of orthostatic challenge as a result of vagal dysfunction. Responses of heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were compared between 10 healthy older and younger adults during onset and sustained lower body negative pressure (LBNP). A younger group was also assessed after blockade of the parasympathetic nervous system with the use of atropine or glycopyrrolate and after blockade of the beta(1)-adrenoceptor by use of metoprolol. Baseline HR (older vs. younger: 59 +/- 4 vs. 54 +/- 1 beats/min) and MAP (83 +…

Cardiac autonomic nervous system activity in obese and never-obese young men.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in age-matched, weight-stable, free-living, ad libitum-fed, obese (OB) and never-obese (NO) young men (body mass index means [SD], 38.5 [3.9] and 22.0 [1.7], respectively) was evaluated by sequential blockade of cardiac autonomic innervation with weight-adjusted doses of parasympathetic (atropine) and sympathetic (esmolol) blockers so as to produce maximal effects on heart rate. Change in heart period (interbeat interval) from baseline, induced by atropine, defined parasympathetic control (PC), and the subsequent change, after esmolol administration, def

Relationship Between Esophageal Motility Disorders and Autonomic Nervous System in Diabetic Patients: Pilot North African Study.

Little attention has been given to esophageal disorders in diabetes mellitus. Pathophysiology of esophageal motility disorders (EMD) in patients with diabetes mellitus is multifactorial. The aims of the present study were: (a) to evaluate the prevalence of EMD in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and (b) to determine the relationship between EMD and autonomic neuropathy as assessed by heart rate variability (HRV). All the patients completed a questionnaire about diabetes characteristics and gastrointestinal symptoms. Conventional esophageal manometry was performed in all patients. HRV was

Autonomic imbalance in cardiac surgery: A potential determinant of the failure in remote ischemic preconditioning.

Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is a cardioprotective strategy against myocardial damage by ischemia-reperfusion. Many in-vivo and ex-vivo animal researches have demonstrated that RIPC decreases significantly the ischemia-reperfusion myocardial damage, by up to 58% in isolated rat heart. Cardiac artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is a clinical model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion and a clinical potential application to RIPC. However, although RIPC has shown successful results in experimental studies, clinical trials on CABG have failed to demonstrate a benefit of RIPC in humans. Str

[Enzyme histochemistry of classical and ultrashort Hirschsprung's disease].

Hirschsprung's disease is the most important type of gastrointestinal dysmotility in neonatal pathology. Aberrant craniocaudal migration of neural crest stem cells results in an intestinal aganglionic segment of variable length. In 'classical' Hirschsprung's disease (60-75% of cases), the aganglionic segment spans the rectum and sigma. Ultrashort Hirschsprung's disease (5-10%) is restricted to the most distal 3-4 cm or immediate rectoanal transition only. In the normal enteric nervous system, myenteric ganglia modulate the parasympathetic innervation of the sacral roots S2-S4. The absence of m

Use of the oculocardiac reflex to assess vagal reactivity during quiet sleep in neonates.

Arousal from sleep can be a protective response to life-threatening stimuli. Hence, faults within state-switching processes may lead to fatal events. To investigate the role of the nervous system during cardiac failure triggered by phasic, vagally mediated stimulation, we analysed autonomic and behavioural reactions in 50 premature neonates during quiet sleep (QS) -- a sleep state characterized by a preponderance of tonic, parasympathetic activity. Bradycardia was induced with a standardized ocular compression test. Neither awakening nor behavioural escape reactions were observed during or aft

Vagal modulation of responses to mental challenge in posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Studies of the autonomic nervous system in posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) have focused on the sympathetic modulation of arousal and have neglected the parasympathetic contribution. This study addresses the parasympathetic control of heart rate in individuals who have survived traumatic events. METHODS: Twenty-nine survivors, 14 with current PTSD and 15 without, participated in the study. The groups were comparable with regard to age, type of trauma, time since the latest traumatic event, and lifetime exposure to traumatic events. Electrocardiograms were recorded during rest

[Experimental study of the whole body response in rabbits by linear oscillatory acceleration and/or optokinetic stimulation].

Motion sickness may be defined as an abnormal body response caused to certain kinds of motion in normal subjects. Although we know etiologic factors and symptoms of motion sickness, the mechanism of motion sickness remains unknown. To clarify some characteristics of motion sickness in rabbits, we observed responses of the autonomic nervous system consisting of a change in heart rate (HR), coefficient of variation of R-R interval (CV-RR), and serum adrenaline (AD) -and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations during linear oscillatory acceleration and/or optokinetic stimulation. The following resul

Autism spectrum disorder in young patients with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome: role of the autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a rare condition characterized by alveolar hypoventilation and autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction requiring long-term ventilation. CCHS could constitute a risk factor of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to birth injury related to respiratory failure, which remains to be determined. ANS dysfunction has also been described in ASD and there are indications for altered contribution of ANS-central nervous system interaction in processing of social information; thus, CCHS could be a risk factor for ASD based on pathophysiolo

Sensory nerves and airway irritability.

The lung, like many other organs, is innervated by a variety of sensory nerves and by nerves of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems that regulate the function of cells within the respiratory tract. Activation of sensory nerves by both mechanical and chemical stimuli elicits a number of defensive reflexes, including cough, altered breathing pattern, and altered autonomic drive, which are important for normal lung homeostasis. However, diseases that afflict the lung are associated with altered reflexes, resulting in a variety of symptoms, including increased cough, dyspnea, airwa

The role of cholinergic and peptidergic pathways in the regulation of pancreatic exocrine function during postnatal development in pigs.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the parasympathetic (cholinergic and peptidergic) nervous system in the regulation of e … eatic secretion in piglets during the pre-weaning period. Thus, these observations suggest that the parasympathetic nervous system plays a dominant role in the functioning of the exocrine pancreas at this time. The action of bombesin suggests that it is a potent secretagogue for the exocrine pancreas in pigs during their postnatal development.

Harmonic Analysis of Electrical Activity of the Autonomic Nervous System in Dorsal Perirenal Lumbar Regions in Healthy Volunteers and Patients with Arterial Hypertension.

To non-invasively assess the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the pulsatile activity of arteries in the perirenal dorsal lumbar regions, electrical bioimpedance (BI) and biopotentials (BP) were recorded in healthy volunteers and patients with arterial hypertension (AH). Signals were processed using harmonic (Fourier) analysis to determine the effective values (rms) of spectral peaks for BI (MR, THR) and BP (MV, THV) in the Mayer (M) frequency range (0.03-0.2 Hz) and the Traube-Hering (TH) frequency band of a controlled respiration rate (0.3-0.4 Hz), which presumably reflect s
