Radical parotidectomy may result from treating advanced parotid malignancies invading the facial nerve. Survival is often enhanced with multimodality treatment protocols, including postoperative radiation therapy. In addition to the reconstructive challenge of restoring facial nerve function, patients may be left with a significant cervicofacial concavity and inadequate skin coverage. This should be addressed with stable vascularized tissue that is resistant to radiation-induced atrophy. This article describes a comprehensive strategy, includes the use of the anterolateral thigh free flap, the

PURPOSE: Parotid gland incidentaloma (PGI) management has not been well characterized in the literature. This study assesses clinicopathologic features, initial evaluation, management, and outcomes of PGIs discovered on various imaging modalities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective case series from a single academic institution. The study cohort included 34 patients with parotid gland incidentalomas discovered between January 2009 and December 2019.
RESULTS: Parotid gland incidentalomas were most frequently identified on magnetic resonance imaging (16 patients, 47.1%). Most patie

Introduction: Tumors of large salivary glands constitute about 2-3% of all head and neck tumors. Their incidence is statistically greater in males than in females, with the first symptoms usually appearing between the 4th and 7th decade of life.
Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of the new classification proposed by European Salivary Gland Society (ESGS) in comparison with the divisions of procedures previously valid in the literature, making a retrospective analysis of patients operated on due to benign tumors of large sali

BACKGROUND: Actinomycosis of the parotid gland is very rare. We sought to examine the clinical features, treatment methods, and treatment results of actinomycosis of the parotid gland in our hospital.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 5 patients with histopathologically identified actinomycosis of the parotid gland from January 2010 to May 2020.
RESULTS: This study included 3 male and 2 female subjects. All patients had a common complaint of the mass in the parotid gland. Skin necrosis was observed in one patient. However, skin necrosis and fistula track occurred in the other 2 patients a

BACKGROUND: Unexpected facial nerve damage can occur during parotid gland tumor surgery. We sought to determine the incidence and treatment outcomes of unexpected facial nerve injuries in patients with parotid gland tumor surgery.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled in this study five patients, who underwent facial nerve neurorrhaphy due to unexpected facial nerve injury during parotid gland tumor surgery January 2012-August 2019.
RESULTS: There were five patients (0.008%) with unexpected facial nerve injuries during the parotid gland tumor surgery of 577 patients in our hospital for approx

Parotid tuberculosis remains a very rare localization in the Department of Otolaryngology and Cervico-Facial Surgery (ENT) sphere. It is presented in the form of a deceptive clinical picture causing confusion with other pathologies of the parotid gland, including tumor pathology. In addition, its lack of knowledge by practitioners increases the risk of missing the diagnosis. Often, the diagnosis is a histological surprise on a piece of excision after an exploratory parotidectomy. However, its treatment is primarily medical if the positive diagnosis is well established. We report medical observ

Parotidectomy for benign and malignant tumors often results in conspicuous contour abnormalities and soft tissue defects. Immediate reconstruction leads to improved patient satisfaction and local or regional flaps can be used for reconstruction in most cases. This article provides a systematic approach to parotid reconstruction.

A 81-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of swelling of the right angle of the jaw. On histopathological examination a diagnosis of Warthin's tumour with coexistent tuberculosis of the parotid gland was made. PCR for tuberculosis was positive. Tuberculosis of the parotid gland is very rare and coexistence with Warthin's tumour is extremely rare. This case is being reported for its rarity.

A 33-year-old male patient with a slow-growing, painless, well-circumscribed soft tissue mass on the left parotid region is presented. The clinical impression was that of a benign salivary gland tumor. The tumor was situated in the superficial lobe of the gland, and a superficial parotidectomy was performed, with preservation of the facial nerve. Histopathologic examination results revealed a sialolipoma of the parotid gland and a lesion that consisted of both mature adipose tissue and glandular elements. Sialolipomas share similar clinical features with conventional lipomas of the salivary gl

OBJECTIVE: The accessory parotid gland is salivary tissue separated from the main parotid gland and lying on masseter muscle. It has secondary duct emptying into the Stensen's duct. The accessory parotid gland exists in 21-61% of individuals. However, the appearance of an accessory parotid tumor is rare, with a reported frequency of 1-7.7% of all parotid gland tumors. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma arises from a pre-existing benign mixed tumor. Most of these tumors will have malignant epithelial component, but not malignant stromal component. Reports of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytological (FN

In adults, hemangioma is a rare presentation of a parotid mass. In this report, we present a case of a 40-year-old lady complaining of a swelling in the right inferior parotid region. Imaging studies revealed a cystic lesion of the right parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology was not significantly helpful in revealing the diagnosis. In the operating room, a vascular cystic lesion was found in the deep lobe of the right parotid gland. Pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma. In this case report, we discuss a rare pathology in the adult population, and revie

A case of congenital parotid lipomatosis in an infant is reported and literature is reviewed. This rare condition in children presents as gradually increasing parotid swelling, which is difficult to diagnose preoperatively as this condition is not considered in the differential diagnosis of a parotid mass. Complete excision with superficial or total parotidectomy with preservation of facial nerve is the treatment of choice.

A woman presented with painful enlargement of her parotid and submandibular glands. She was shown to have the previously unreported combination of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, Sjögren's syndrome, Hashimoto's disease, and myasthenia gravis. Parotid gland biopsy and bone marrow examination showed the presence of a rare lymphoplasmacytoid lymphoma. There was amyloid deposition in the parotid glands, gums and on muscle biopsy. Immunohistochemical staining of the parotid lymphoma and amyloid was monotypic for lambda light chains, and there was also a lambda chain paraprotein. It is felt tha

The embryology and anatomy of the parotid lymphatics are reviewed. Instances where intraparotid adenopathy can be confused with a parotid tumor are cited. Added to the roentgen signs of parotid malignancy, a new finding, parotolymphatic backflow, is described for what we believe is the first time. Its pathogenesis is discussed.

A case of benign lymphoepithelial parotid cyst with sebaceous differentiation, or cystic sebaceous lymphadenoma, in a 57-year-old white man is presented. The literature on lymphoepithelial cysts and sebaceous lymphadenomas of the parotid gland is reviewed, and the alternative hypotheses of "branchial cleft origin" and "intranodal salivary gland inclusion origin" are compared. This case lends support to the intranodal glandular inclusion theory for lymphoepithelial cysts of the parotid.
