OBJECTIVES: Cystic echinococcosis is a worldwide spread zoonosis and humans become accidental intermediate hosts. Any tissue can be affected. However, oromaxillofacial cystic echinococcosis is very uncommon and has never been studied systematically and no evidence-based treatment recommendations are available. Aim of this paper is to summarize the current knowledge and clinical experience with oromaxillofacial manifestations of cystic echinococcosis.

A 68-year-old man developed a rapidly-growing right cervical tumor, a biopsy of which allowed for the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a right cervical mass lesion of 80 mm in diameter that extended from the medial region of the parotid gland to the posterior region of the neck. While undergoing a chest X-ray in an upright position, he lost consciousness and briefly fell. A transient loss of consciousness recurred while changing his position on the bed, and an electrocardiogram at that time revealed sinus arrest of a s

Primary non-cutaneous melanoma is a rare type of melanoma that occurs mostly on mucosal surfaces. The head and neck region is the most common site for these melanomas. The following cases described herein include patients diagnosed with primary non-cutaneous melanomas. The locations included the parotid gland (one case), the submandibular gland (one case), and the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses (three cases). Among these patients, one patient developed lymph node metastasis and one patient had distant metastasis. Treatment included endoscopic surgery (one case), endoscopic surgery with adj

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the parotid gland often manifests as distant metastasis long after the initial surgery, resulting in a poor long-term prognosis. The most common sites of metastasis are the lungs, liver, and bones. Single intracranial metastasis is very rare.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 43-year-old woman with a history of surgical removal of ACC 24 years prior presented with Gerstmann syndrome and right hemianopsia. Head magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solitary extra-axial tumor in the left occipital region. The tumor was surgically removed and pathologically diagno

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a type of B-cell lineage lymphoma that can affect the head and neck region. This report presents a rare case of an extra-nodal marginal zone B-cell MALT lymphoma of a sublingual gland, diagnosed in an 18-year-old male patient. The patient had a history of ranula surgical removal on the right side of the mouth. One year after surgery, the patient presented with complaints of swelling of the left parotid gland, with no significant changes found during the examination and a self-resolving outcome. Subsequently, two years later, the patient bega

BACKGROUND: Hemangiomas are benign neoplasms of capillary proliferation that arise from a developmental anomaly where angioblastic mesenchyme fails to form canals. Most hemangiomas arise in the head and neck region, either superficially in the skin or deeper within endocrine organs such as the parotid gland. Parathyroid hemangiomas, however, are extremely rare, with only five cases previously reported in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a case of a 68-year-old man with a hemangioma almost completely replacing the right upper parathyroid gland, grossly measuring 1.3 × 1.3

Intramuscular hemangiomas (IMHs) of the masseter muscle are extremely rare in the head and neck region and, thus, are often misdiagnosed as parotid tumors prior to surgery. Excisional resection remains the standard treatment for IMH. Since these tumors are located on the proximal side of the facial nerve, it is important to preserve the facial nerve during surgery. This study reports the case of a 57-year-old male who presented with a progressive tender swelling on the right side of the face, which had been present for >6 months. Computed tomography of the neck revealed a heterogeneous highly-

A man in his early 30s presented with right-sided preauricular swelling and facial oedema. He had a history of acid injury to his right ear as a child resulting in pinna deformity and subsequent blind sac closure of the external auditory canal. Imaging showed abnormal ear anatomy and abnormal density of the right parotid gland. Antibiotic therapy prevented progression but did not resolve the symptoms. Therefore, the infected area was surgically drained. This showed an underlying cholesteatoma, a benign but locally destructive condition where keratinising squamous epithelium grows in the middle

CONTEXT: A cervicofacial pain and foreign body sensation in pharynx associated with styloid process elongation is called Eagle syndrome. Typically, this syndrome is provoked by tonsillectomy or trauma. We report the first case of acute parotitis-induced Eagle syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old woman presented with right facial pain. CT scan of neck revealed asymmetric enhancement of the right parotid gland compatible with acute parotitis. All inflammation was resolved with antibiotics. However, the patient complained of pain in right mandibular region out of proportion to inflammation. Revi

Postoperative quality of life after parotidectomy depends not only on surgical outcomes, such as the complete removal of a tumour, non-recurrence and the preservation of facial nerve function, but also on scar satisfaction and the degree of sensory dysfunction in the upper cervical area and at the ear lobe. Especially young patients and women consider the scar in the infra-auricular area and in the neck region to be distressing and even disfiguring. Resection of the great auricular nerve leads to paraesthesia and hypoesthesia, which leads to discomfort in many patients especially when using th

Sarcoidosis is one of the granulomatus disorders affecting many organ systems of the body. Renal impairment in sarcoidosis is rare and occurs usually as a result of long standing hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria with nephrocalcinosis or renal stones. Sarcoid glomerulopathy and tubulo-interstitial granulomatus involvement have been described. We report two cases of sarcoidosis, the first with interstitial nephritis and anterior uveitis without evidence of granuloma. The patient was normocalcemic and normocalciuric. The second case presented with nephritic range proteinuria and severe renal insuf

The LMR-15c linear accelerator was used to irradiate the maxillofacial region of white rats. The results showed that when the irradiation dose reached 3,000 rad (TDF49), changes in pulpal tissue, periodontal tissue, parotid and submandibular gland, lymph nodes and oral mucosa began to take place and became severe as the times of irradiation and the cumulated doses increased. The body weight of rats had no obvious changes after irradiation, however, blood changes and during the recovery period showed that the injury of irradiation to immune function was obvious. The biological effects of X-rays

Infarction has rarely been reported in some types of salivary gland tumors. In this study, we present the first case of infarction occurring in salivary basal cell adenoma. A 62-year-old male presented with swelling in the left parotid region. Histopathological examination revealed extensive central necrosis surrounded by a rim of viable tumor tissue showing the typical histology of basal cell adenoma. Nuclear β-catenin expression and the CTNNB1 p.I35T (c.104 T > C) mutation were identified in the tumor. A diagnosis of basal cell adenoma with central necrosis was made, and the postoperative pe…

Solitary fibrous tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are rarely encountered in clinical practice. These are unusual mesenchymal tumours initially described as primary spindle-cell neoplasms. Such tumours may manifest in pleural and extrapleural sites such as the liver, parapharyngeal space, sublingual and parotid glands, and thyroid but are seldom described in the nose and paranasal sinus region. Erosion of adjacent structures may occur, but the tumour itself does not metastasise. A young patient presented with a progressive unilateral nasal mass. The initial nasal biopsy reported

Cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) being the most common type. Even though SCC is the major type of cancer found in the head and neck region, the salivary glands contribute to about 1/20 cases, of which 1/10 are said to be carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) type, and the parotid gland is found to be the most common origin of such cases. Although it usually arises later in life, it can grow rapidly, with local symptoms being late findings, if any. Even though fine needle aspiration cytology has low sensitivity for diagnosing suc

Many cases of immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) involve swelling of the salivary glands, often affecting the parotid and submandibular glands in the head and neck region, in addition to the lacrimal glands. Cases of IgG4-RD characterized by swelling of the palatal glands, however, are extremely rare. Here, we describe a case of IgG4-RD involving bilateral swelling of the palatal glands. An 83-year-old man presented at our hospital with bilateral swelling of the lacrimal and submandibular glands. A solid bilateral swelling of normal colour and unclear boundaries was observed in the ha

Secondary carcinogenesis within the irradiation range is one of the most severe problems in cancer survivors. A 60-year-old woman developed hypopharyngeal carcinoma, and she received radical surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. Eight years later, brown pigmentation and induration were observed in the left subaural region. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy revealed malignancy and the parotid tumor was diagnosed as recurrence of hypopharyngeal carcinoma. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radical parotidectomy was performed. The pathological diagnosis was angiosarcoma, which was most likely ind

Yolk sac tumour also known as primitive endodermal tumour is the most common malignant germ cell tumour (GCT) in the paediatric age group. Most common sites of involvement are ovaries and testes, but rarely can occur in the extragonadal sites. In the head and neck region, yolk sac tumours have been reported in the nasopharynx, sinonasal tract, orbit, ear and parotid gland. Nasopharynx is an uncommon site for yolk sac tumour and very few cases of nasopharngeal pure yolk sac tumour have been reported so far. Yolk sac tumours are highly malignant and have a poor prognosis. This is a case of pure

Desmoid-type fibromatosis (DF) is a locally aggressive benign soft tissue tumor. It is rarely observed in the head and neck region and is particularly uncommon in the parotid gland. This report describes the case of a 32-month-old girl with DF of the head and neck. The tumor was resected with gross residual tumors. Recurrence occurred 3 months later and then the patient was treated with iodine-125 interstitial brachytherapy. The tumor was completely absent 6 months after brachytherapy. No recurrence was found 60 months after brachytherapy during follow-up. No severe toxicities or growth abnorm

Synchronous tumours of different histological types involving the salivary gland are very rare. There have been cases reported in the literature of such tumours occurring in the parotid gland. A 52-year-old man presented with a 4-year history of gradually increasing painless swelling in the right submandibular region. The ultrasound scan of the neck showed features suggestive of a submandibular sialadenitis. The right submandibular gland was then surgically excised and sent for histopathological examination. The features showed a unique dual pathology of the submandibular gland, that is, a pla
