Estimating the Exposure-Response Relationship between Fine Mineral Dust Concentration and Coccidioidomycosis Incidence Using Speciated Particulate Matter Data: A Longitudinal Surveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: Coccidioidomycosis, caused by inhalation of Coccidioides spp. spores, is an emerging infectious disease that is increasing in incidence throughout the southwestern US. The pathogen is soil-dwelling, and spore dispersal and human exposure are thought to co-occur with airborne mineral dust exposures, yet fundamental exposure-response relationships have not been conclusively estimated. OBJECTIVES: We estimated associations between fine mineral dust concentration and coccidioidomycosis incidence in California from 2000 to 2017 at the census tract level, spatiotemporal heterogeneity in

Cordyceps militaris Grown on Germinated Rhynchosia nulubilis (GRC) Encapsulated in Chitosan Nanoparticle (GCN) Suppresses Particulate Matter (PM)-Induced Lung Inflammation in Mice.

Cordyceps militaris grown on germinated Rhynchosia nulubilis (GRC) exerts various biological effects, including anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and immune-regulatory effects. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of GRC encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles (CN) against particulate matter (PM)-induced lung inflammation. Optimal CN (CN6) (CHI: TPP w/w ratio of 4:1; TPP pH 2) exhibited a zeta potential of +22.77 mV, suitable for GRC encapsulation. At different GRC concentrations, higher levels (60 and 120 mg/mL) led to increased negative zeta potential, enhancing stabil…

Fine Particulate Matter, Noise Pollution, and Greenspace and Prostate Cancer Risk in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Greenspace is hypothesized as being protective against cancer, whereas noise pollution and fine particulate matter (<2.5 μm in diameter, PM2.5) are both potential risk factors. Findings from recent studies of greenspace and PM2.5 with prostate cancer are not conclusive and the association between noise exposure and cancer has not been evaluated in a U.S. study. METHODS: We assessed PM2.5, noise, and greenspace exposure using spatiotemporal models and satellite-based estimates at enrollment addresses for N = 43,184 male participants of the prospective Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, an…

Combined multi-omics analysis reveals oil mist particulate matter-induced lung injury in rats: Pathological damage, proteomics, metabolic disturbances, and lung dysbiosis.

Oil mist particulate matter (OMPM) causes acute and chronic diseases and exacerbations. Owing to the characteristics of poor ventilation, high oil mist concentration, and a relatively closed working environment, the existence of OMPM in the cabin is inevitable, and its impact on the health of occupations on ships cannot be ignored. However, compared with several studies that summarized the health effects of OMPM from traditional sources, few studies have focused on the occupational exposure risk of OMPM from oil pollution sources in ships. In this study, we collected OMPM from oil pollution in…

Single-cell transcriptomics reveals immune dysregulation mediated by IL-17A in initiation of chronic lung injuries upon real-ambient particulate matter exposure.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) increases susceptibility to chronic respiratory diseases, including inflammation and interstitial fibrosis. However, the regulatory mechanisms by which the immune response mediates the initiation of pulmonary fibrosis has yet to be fully characterized. This study aimed to illustrate the interplay between different cell clusters and key pathways in triggering chronic lung injuries in mice following PM exposure. RESULTS: Six-week-old C57BL/6J male mice were exposed to PM or filtered air for 16 weeks in a real-ambient PM exposure …

Time series analysis of short-term effects of particulate matter pollution on the circulatory system disease mortality risk in Lishui District, China.

Epidemiological evidence has shown a significant association between short-term exposure to air pollution and mortality risk for circulatory system diseases (CSD). However, informative insights on the significance and magnitude of its relationship in the process of government interventions on abating air pollution are still lacking, particularly in a burgeoning Chinese city. In this study, we conducted a time series study in Lishui District, Nanjing, to examine the effect of ambient particulate matter (PM), e.g., PM2.5 and PM10, on daily death counts of CSD which included cardiovascular diseas…

Utilizing daily excessive concentration hours to estimate cardiovascular mortality and years of life lost attributable to fine particulate matter in Tehran, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for associations between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in Iran is scarce. Given large within-day variations of PM2.5 concentration, using the daily mean of PM2.5 (PM2.5mean) as exposure metric might bias the health-related assessment. This study applied a novel indicator, daily excessive concentration hours (DECH), to evaluate the effect of ambient PM2.5 on CVD mortality and years of life lost (YLL) in Tehran, the capital city of Iran. METHODS: Hourly concentration data for PM2.5, daily information for meteorology and records of regist…

The contribution of motor vehicle emissions to ambient fine particulate matter public health impacts in New York City: a health burden assessment.

BACKGROUND: On-road vehicles are an important source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in cities, but spatially varying traffic emissions and vulnerable populations make it difficult to assess impacts to inform policy and the public. METHODS: We estimated PM2.5-attributable mortality and morbidity from on-road vehicle generated air pollution in the New York City (NYC) region using high-spatial-resolution emissions estimates, air quality modeling, and local health incidence data to evaluate variations in impacts by vehicle class, neighborhood, and area socioeconomic status. We developed multi…

Selective TNF-α targeting with infliximab attenuates impaired oxygen metabolism and contractile function induced by an acute exposure to air particulate matter.

Inflammation plays a central role in the onset and progression of cardiovascular diseases associated with the exposure to air pollution particulate matter (PM). The aim of this work was to analyze the cardioprotective effect of selective TNF-α targeting with a blocking anti-TNF-α antibody (infliximab) in an in vivo mice model of acute exposure to residual oil fly ash (ROFA). Female Swiss mice received an intraperitoneal injection of infliximab (10 mg/kg body wt) or saline solution, and were intranasally instilled with a ROFA suspension (1 mg/kg body wt). Control animals were instilled with sal…

Genotoxic effects and oxidative stress induced by organic extracts of particulate matter(PM 10)collected from a subway tunnel in Seoul, Korea.

Particulate matter (PM) has become an important health risk factor in our society. PM can easily deposit in the bronchi and lungs, causing diverse diseases such as respiratory infections, lung cancers and cardiovascular diseases. In recent days, more and more toxicological studies have been dealing with air particles in distinctive areas including industrial areas, transportation sites, or indoors. Studies on subway PM in particular, have been recognizing PM as an important health risk factor because many people use subways as a major mode of public transportation (4 million people a day in Ko…

Particulate matter less than 10 microns (PM10) and fine particles less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5): relationships between indoor, outdoor and personal concentrations.

Among 17 homes in Switzerland, the relationship between indoor and outdoor levels for particulate matter less than 10 microns (PM10), particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) and NO2 was investigated. In 10 homes, the inhabitants also participated in conducting personal measurements. All homes were naturally ventilated. In homes without any indoor sources and where human activity was low, PM10 I/O ratios amounted to approximately 0.7. Of the indoor sources, smoking had the highest influence on I/O ratios (> 1.8). In homes not containing any apparent source, 'human activity' was an impo…

Respirable Particulate Matter Induces Natural Killer Cell Dysfunction via Oxidative Stress-Mediated Lysosomal and Mitochondrial Injury: Implications for Mineral-Rich Mining Dust Exposure.

Epidemiological and occupational studies increasingly link respirable particulate matter (PM), including mineral dust, exposure with elevated lung cancer risk, yet the immunological mechanisms underlying these associations remain poorly defined. In this study, we investigated how compositionally distinct respirable PMs affect natural killer (NK) cells, a key component of immune surveillance. Using in vitro exposure and K562 target-cell challenge models, we show that respirable mineral-containing PMs induce dose- and composition-dependent NK-cell injury, including increased apoptosis/necrosis, …

Exposure to low-level fine particulate matter air pollution and developmental vulnerability at school entry: A population-based cohort study in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter air pollution (PM2.5) has been associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Yet, evidence from whole-of-population studies examining developmental vulnerability at school entry remains limited, particularly in low-exposure settings. We investigated associations between prenatal and early childhood PM2.5 exposure and developmental vulnerability at school entry in Western Australia. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using linked records from the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC), Midwives' Notifications System (MNS), Birth…

Associations of fine particulate matter pollution components with overall, prostate cancer, and cardiovascular disease mortality in men with prostate cancer: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Over 3.5 million US men are living with prostate cancer (Pica), many with underlying cardiovascular disease (CVD). Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) contributes to higher CVD mortality through inflammation and other mechanisms, and so may increase non-cancer mortality in men with PCa. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 886,876 men diagnosed with PCa between 2000 and 2015 and followed through 2018 across eight state cancer registries. Annual average predictions of five residential PM2.5 component exposures (elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), nitrate, ammon…

Late-summer hotspot of particulate organic matter and essential omega-3 fatty acids at the sea-ice bottom in the Central Arctic Ocean.

The Central Arctic Ocean is undergoing rapid environmental change associated with sea-ice retreat. The sea-ice bottom and adjacent under-ice waters are key zones for particulate organic matter (POM) accumulation and zooplankton foraging, yet the characteristics of POM across this interface remain unclear. Here, we analyzed particulate organic carbon (POC) and fatty-acid (FA) profiles of POM from these two habitats to quantify organic matter enrichment and characterize POM sources, omega-3 FA availability, and potential trophic significance. The sea-ice bottom represented an organic-matter hots

Mechanisms involved in pro-inflammatory responses to traffic-derived particulate matter (PM) in THP-1 macrophages compared to HBEC3-KT bronchial epithelial cells.

The pro-inflammatory responses in THP-1-derived macrophages and human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC3-KT) were examined after exposure to size-fractioned particulate matter (PM) sampled in two road tunnels. All tunnel PM samples induced release and expression of CXCL8 and IL-1β in THP-1 macrophages (50 µg/mL) and HBEC3-KT cells (100 µg/mL), but the potency of the samples differed between the cell types. The road tunnel PM induced pro-inflammatory responses in the macrophages to a much higher extent than diesel exhaust particles (DEP) and particles derived from the stone materials used in the…

Statistical downscaling of coarse-resolution fine particulate matter predictions over the contiguous United States: model development, evaluation, and implication in health impact assessment.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) predictions at a high spatial resolution (i.e., neighborhood scale) are critically needed to better understand the health impacts of air pollution, especially at neighborhood scales. This work develops a statistical downscaling approach to predict PM2.5 at a 1-km grid resolution over the contiguous United States (CONUS) under baseline and future energy transition scenarios and estimate health benefits utilizing the Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program (BenMAP). To this end, we incorporate the satellite-based high-resolution aerosol optical depth (…
