Intravenous Fibrinolysis for Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: A Cohort Study and Updated Patient-Level Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Central retinal artery occlusion results in sudden, painless, usually permanent loss of vision in the affected eye. There is no proven, effective treatment to salvage visual acuity and a clear, unmet need for an effective therapy. In this work, we evaluated the efficacy of intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator (IV alteplase) in a prospective cohort study and an updated systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We enrolled consecutive patients with acute central retinal artery occlusion within 48 hours of symptoms onset and with a visual acuity of <20/200 fr

Pattern of Ocular Injuries Following Road Traffic Accidents Seen at a Tertiary Eye Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Traffic trauma can lead to ocular damage. Open globe injuries usually have a poor prognosis, which can be ameliorated by prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Nonetheless, few studies have focused on the visual outcomes of patients following traffic accidents. In this study, we aimed to examine the characteristics and prognosis of ocular complications in patients following traffic accidents at a specialized tertiary eye hospital. METHODS: We classified 44 patients from traffic accidents (88 eyes) into groups with equal or better (better group) and worse (worse group) corre

Unilateral Photopsia: An Unusual Case of Syphilitic Endophthalmitis.

Syphilitic endophthalmitis represents a rare ocular manifestation that can occur in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. It is often misdiagnosed due to its resemblance to many other infectious, inflammatory, malignant, and rheumatologic conditions. This report describes the case of a 66-year-old male patient who presented with visualizing bright lights in the left eye associated with a significant decline in visual acuity. A series of investigations was done, including a temporal artery biopsy with unremarkable findings. Furthermore, vitreous aspiration was performed with Gram

Intravitreal acetazolamide implant for pseudophakic cystoid macular edema.

BACKGROUND: Pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (PCME) is the most common cause of visual acuity deterioration after uncomplicated cataract surgery. There is no consensus regarding how to manage recurrent or refractory cases. REPORT: A 54-year-old woman complained of decreased vision and central metamorphopsia in the right eye (OD) 3 months after uneventful cataract surgery. Visual acuity was 0.3 logMAR (20/40) OD and 0.1 logMAR (20/25) OS. Reduced macular brightness was seen OD on funduscopy associated with increased macular thickness on optical coherence tomography (OCT). Pseudophakic cystoi

[Tolerability and short-term efficacy of the Ozurdex® dexamethasone intravitreal implant for treatment of uveitic cystoid macular edema: A retrospective study of 52 injections performed at the Clermont-Ferrand teaching hospital].

Macular edema is the main cause of decreased visual acuity in uveitis and determines the visual prognosis. We retrospectively analyzed the tolerability and efficacy of the dexamethasone intravitreal implant in the management of uveitis. Twenty-five patients with uveitic cystoid macular edema were all treated with the Ozurdex(®) dexamethasone intravitreal implant from January 2012 to August 2014. The main outcome measures were visual acuity recovery, changes in macular thickness and resolution of the vitritis. Thirty-two eyes of 25 patients received 52 injections of Ozurdex(®). Both complete re

Endoscopic optic canal decompression for compressive optic neuropathy.

Compressive optic neuropathy is a rare condition that may be caused by trauma or non-traumatic events. Endoscopic techniques have evolved to provide an easier surgical approach to decompression. The aim of this study was to determine the endoscopic anatomy of the orbital apex and to identify the optimal targets for endoscopic optic nerve decompression. We report five patients with endoscopic optic nerve decompression: two with traumatic optic neuropathies, two with fibrous dysplasias, and one with chordoma. For these lesions, the major treatment concern was removal of the bony structures aroun

[A new toric diffractive multifocal lens for refractive surgery].

BACKGROUND: Up to now only a combination of lens and corneal surgery in the sense of bioptics could be used in refractive surgery for correcting high myopia, hyperopia or presbyopia in combination with astigmatisms. Since the summer of 2007 the first model of a toric diffractive bifocal intraocular lens is available for correcting combined refractive errors. The first results on 10 eyes from 6 patients are presented in this article. METHOD: Refractive lens exchange with implantation of a toric diffractive multifocal lens (Acri.LISA toric, Zeiss/(*)Acritec) was performed on 10 eyes from 6 pati

Occupational risk factors for brain tumors. A case-referent death-certificate analysis.

BACKGROUND: Children with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) have reduced knee joint proprioceptive acuity compared to peers. Altered proprioception at end of range in individuals with JHS is hypothesised to contribute to recurrent joint injuries and instability. This study aims to provide the first objective comparison of functional knee joint proprioceptive acuity in hyperextension range compared to early flexion range in children with JHS. METHODS: Active, weight-bearing knee joint proprioceptive acuity in both hyperextension and early flexion range was tested with a purpose-built device.
