A Pilot Study of the Peer Supported Family Intervention, Psychosis Recovery by Enabling Adult Carers at Home (Psychosis-REACH) in an Early Psychosis Clinic.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosis REACH (p-REACH) is a co-produced, bichronous (hybrid synchronous and asynchronous) Family Intervention for psychosis that leverages a direct-to-family delivery model to enhance access. We aimed to assess the effect, feasibility and acceptability of the p-REACH core training when combined with longitudinal, family peer-delivered support in an early psychosis setting. METHOD: After completing the p-REACH core training, caregiver participants (N = 20) engaged in monthly peer and clinician co-led coaching groups for 6 months to support skill development and met with a peer wi

Promoting professional identity through peer support during studies: A report on the peer support in medical education project.

OBJECTIVE: Poor well-being, burnout and depression are prevalent among doctors, who are exposed to a variety of stresses and crisis situations. Even medical students have been described as prone to burnout due to 'relentless demands on themselves' [Mata DA et al., JAMA. 2015] or as vulnerable to illness from poor coping with psychosocial stress and the use of dysfunctional coping strategies [Puthran R et al., Med Educ. 2016]. In the model degree programme in human medicine at the University of Augsburg, students are offered peer support, with the aim of establishing self-care and collegial car

Attachment, Emotional Regulation, and Perceived Academic Efficacy in Adolescence: A Basis for Psychoeducational Intervention.

Objective: This study examined the relationships between secure attachment to parents and peers, emotional regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), and perceived academic self-efficacy in adolescence. The research also aimed to identify how secure attachment is related to these variables to inform psychosocial interventions in educational and family contexts. Method: A total of 703 adolescents (351 boys, 352 girls; aged 15-18) completed validated questionnaires assessing attachment to mothers, fathers, and peers, emotional regulation, and perceived academic sel

A Practical Tutorial for Creating and Sharing Student-Led Educational Podcasts in Medical Education: The PodBases Experience.

BACKGROUND: Medical biochemistry and molecular genetics stand out as some of the most demanding courses for first-year medical students, who often require repeated exposure to complex pathways and molecular processes. To provide additional support in this early stage of training, we created PodBases, a peer-led educational podcast integrated into an academic mentoring program and made available through a widely accessible global audio-streaming platform. The goal was to offer brief, clinically oriented episodes that reinforced key concepts and complemented traditional teaching. APPROACH: The

A pilot randomized controlled trial to explore the feasibility of a peer-delivered single-session brief intervention for youth with moderate risk substance use.

BACKGROUND: Youth in sub-Saharan Africa are at high risk of substance use yet lack access to appropriate interventions. The goal of this project was to evaluate the feasibility of a definitive trial to explore efficacy of a peer-delivered single-session brief intervention (SSBI) for youth with substance use in Kenya. METHODS: Seventy youth aged 15-24 years with moderate risk substance use were randomized to SSBI or to psychoeducation. Data was collected at baseline and month three. Primary outcomes: Feasibility criteria, e.g., study participation rate, proportion of participants willing to be

Reducing Lower Extremity Amputations via Peer Support Interventions: A Scoping Review.

Patients with diabetes and/or peripheral artery disease (PAD) are at risk for lower limb amputation and a subsequently higher mortality risk. Peer support interventions have been shown to increase diabetes self-management and glycemic control. This scoping review aims to synthesize the current literature on peer support interventions in reducing lower limb amputations. A PubMed search was conducted in June of 2023, excluding publications prior to 2000, focusing on two themes: (1) peer support and (2) the patient population of interest (i.e., individuals with diabetic foot disease and/or PAD).

Exploring Gambling-like Behaviors in Children's Cigarette Card Games and Parental Pro-game Perceptions in China: A Qualitative Study.

Cigarette card games emerged as a popular yet controversial pastime among children in China, raising concerns on the potential to foster gambling-like behaviors. This study explored children's experiences and perceptions of cigarette card games, as well as parental attitudes and facilitation practices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 child-parent dyads (19 boys, 2 girls) from September to December 2024. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were adopted to recruit children who had played cigarette card games in the past 1 month. Separate interview protocols were develope

Gender Differences in On-Site and Online Gambling Among Finnish Adolescents: Associations with School-, Family-, and Peer-Related Factors and Other Risk Behaviors.

Adolescent gambling is a growing public health concern as opportunities expand across both physical and digital environments. This study examined gender differences in on-site and online gambling among Finnish adolescents and assessed associations with school engagement, family context, peer activities, and co-occurring risk behaviors. Data were obtained from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD), collected from Finnish adolescents aged 15-16 in 2024 (boys: n = 1706; girls: n = 1588). Associations with past-12-month gambling were analyzed using Rao-Scott's chi-s

Optimizing machine learning-based identification of sexual health influencers for HIV self-testing distribution among men who have sex with men in China: a secondary analysis of a quasi-experimental trial.

BACKGROUND: Secondary distribution of HIV self-testing can expand testing among men who have sex with men. A parent quasi-experimental trial found that sexual health influencers (SHIs) identified by a machine-learning model achieved greater peer uptake than those identified by an empirical scale, but the factors driving distribution effectiveness remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the parent trial (ChiCTR2000039632) in five provinces in southern China. Participants were randomized to either the empirical scale or machine-learning identification arm, and SHIs were th

Experiences and Outcomes of Peer Navigation and Support Interventions for Adolescents on HIV Treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis.

Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) face ongoing challenges with treatment adherence and engagement in care, resulting in lower viral suppression rates compared to adults. Peer navigation has shown promise in supporting psychosocial well-being and adherence among adults, but evidence specific to adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains limited. This qualitative evidence synthesis (QES) describes and assesses the quality of qualitative and mixed-methods studies on peer navigation and support interventions for ALHIV receiving antiretroviral therapy in SSA. Eligible studies, published in E

The Relationship Between Parent-Child Attachment and Peer Attachment and Depression in College Students: A Moderated Polynomial Regression With Response Surface Analyses.

Previous research has established a strong link between parental attachment and depression in youth. However, the nuances of paternal-maternal attachment congruence and its relationship with depressive symptoms, as well as the roles of gender differences and peer attachment in this context, remain unclear. This study aimed to explore these associations among emerging adults. Attachment and depressive symptoms were assessed in 1564 college students using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), respectively. Polynomial regression and res

Agreeing to disagree: Discrepancies between self and parent reported social functioning in adolescents with epilepsy without intellectual disability.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a distinct developmental period involving profound changes in social processing and motivation. As epilepsy is associated with risk for social challenges, it is important to assess the impact of epilepsy on social functioning during this developmental period. The primary aim of this study was to compare levels of social functioning in adolescents (ages 12-18) with epilepsy and without an intellectual disability, and their similarly aged, healthy peers, as reported both by the adolescents and by their parents. Additional aims were to assess parent-youth agreement and e

Peer victimization and adolescent's social adjustment: Testing the mechanism of the healthy context paradox in a two-wave study.

A recurring paradox in recent literature is that victims' psychological adjustment outcomes worsen as classroom-level victimization declines. Due to the limited and inconsistent findings from longitudinal studies, this two-wave study aims to examine whether the impact of individual-level victimization on three basic psychological needs (autonomy, relatedness, and competence needs) and internalizing problems (anxiety and depression) varies across classrooms with different victimization levels. A sample of Chinese adolescents (Time 1: N = 1358, 49.5% girls; Mage ± SD = 12.38 ± 0.53; Time 2: N =

The effects of physical exercise on adolescents' antisocial behavior: the chain-mediated effects of good peer relationships and subjective wellbeing.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the impact of physical exercise on adolescents' antisocial behaviour, analysing the independent and sequential mediating roles of positive peer relationships and subjective wellbeing to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from 7,272 adolescents, we conducted correlation analysis, OLS regression, and bootstrap-based mediation analysis (PROCESS Macro, Model 6) with 5,000 resamples to examine (1) the direct effect of physical exercise on antisocial behavior and (2) the independent and sequential mediation effects of positive pee

Smoking Cessation Strategies for Different Types of Cigarette Users Using a Digital Peer-Supported App and Nicotine Aids: Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation plans under Japan's national health insurance system are hindered by low completion and success rates. A small-group intervention combining nicotine replacement therapy with digital peer support demonstrated improved smoking cessation success outcomes. However, the extent to which the type of tobacco products used affects the program's efficacy remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the differences in smoking cessation success rates among cigarette-only smokers, heated tobacco product (HTP)-only users, and individuals who use both (dual smokers)

The influence of family instability on Mexican-origin adolescent delinquency through parental monitoring: Moderating roles of adolescent family obligation values and affiliation with deviant peers.

Unaddressed adolescent delinquency may contribute to negative adult outcomes, such as poor mental and physical health (Harris-McKoy & Cui, 2013; J. Kim et al., 2020). Although family instability has been identified as a risk factor for adolescent delinquency (Vargas et al., 2013), the hypothesized underlying mechanism of parental monitoring remains relatively underexplored. This is especially the case for Mexican-origin families where parental monitoring is embedded within the cultural values of the family (e.g., family obligation values) and with the larger social context of youth (e.g., affi

Unveiling multi-level determinants on empathy among Chinese primary and secondary school students: evidence from SSES 2019.

Empathy has attracted more and more attention among scholars, whereas potential determinants on the empathy of primary and secondary school students have been rarely discussed in Chinese context. The present study, utilizing a hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analysis, investigated the multi-level determinants on empathy of Chinese primary and secondary school students (N = 6,926) based on the 2019 Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) data. At student-level, the results displayed that mental well-being, global mindedness, teacher-student relations, peer relations, and sense of belong

Peer effects among friends on students' cognitive abilities: An analysis based on emotional distance.

In contemporary society, students' cognitive abilities are crucial for the accumulation of human capital. Consequently, significant concern has been expressed regarding the impact of peer effects among friends on students' cognitive abilities. Based on the "China Education Tracking Survey" data, we discuss peer effects among friends on students' cognitive abilities from the perspective of Emotional Distance Analysis. Our study shows that: (1) Students' average scores could be actively affected by the increase in the number of friends with good grades. (2) Peer effects among friends are in acco
