Optics in South Asia: introduction.

This feature issue is motivated by a recent upswing in optical and photonic research in South Asia and its increasing influence on both the scientific community and regional economies. In response, JOSA A and JOSA B have launched this feature issue on Optics in South Asia, focusing on work from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. To maintain the standards of JOSA A and JOSA B, all submissions underwent a rigorous peer-review process. The issue highlights ongoing outstanding research in optics and photonics in South Asia, covering topics that span the full scopes of both journals

Psychometric Properties of the Highly Sensitive Child Scale and Its Role in Socio-Emotional and Behavioral Development: Evidence from Japanese Adolescent Samples.

Environmental sensitivity (referred to as trait sensitivity)-the capacity to perceive and process both supportive and adverse environmental experiences-may influence adolescent development, yet evidence in adolescence is scarce compared with that in childhood. We analyzed adolescent self-reports and maternal ratings from 2,375 Japanese adolescents across three studies. In Studies 1-2, the 21-item Highly Sensitive Child scale showed a bifactor structure (general sensitivity plus Ease of Excitation-Low Sensory Threshold and Aesthetic Sensitivity), with good internal consistency and moderate test

Integration of multi-modal measurements identifies critical mechanisms of tuberculosis drug action.

Treatments for tuberculosis remain lengthy, motivating a search for new drugs with novel mechanisms of action. However, it remains challenging to determine the direct targets of a drug and which disrupted cellular processes lead to bacterial killing. We developed a computational tool, DECIPHAER (decoding cross-modal information of pharmacologies via autoencoders), to select the important correlated transcriptional and morphological responses of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to treatment. By finding a reduced feature space, DECIPHAER highlighted essential features of cellular damage. DECIPHAER pro

Cocreating composite digital stories to share research findings with minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities: a reflective guide.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have an ethical responsibility to share their findings with their studies' participants and those who can influence policy and practice. Storytelling is an arts-based approach increasingly used in nursing research to share findings, but little has been written about how to use the approach in participatory research involving people from minority ethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. AIM: To present a guide to cocreating digital stories to share research findings with minority ethnic and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. DISCUSSION: The aut

Identifying factors influencing cognitive outcomes after anodal transcranial direct current stimulation in older adults with and without cognitive impairment: A systematic review.

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve cognition in healthy older adults, those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), albeit with considerable variability in response. This systematic review identifies interindividual factors that may influence tDCS outcomes in older individuals with or without cognitive impairment. Peer-reviewed articles were included if they assessed whether cognitive outcomes (memory or global cognition) after tDCS were associated with pre-intervention factors in healthy older adults or individuals with AD/MCI. We iden

Dynamics of huntingtin protein interactions in the striatum identifies candidate modifiers of Huntington disease.

Huntington disease (HD) is a monogenic neurodegenerative disorder with one causative gene, huntingtin (HTT). Yet, HD pathobiology is multifactorial, suggesting that cellular factors influence disease progression. Here, we define HTT protein-protein interactions (PPIs) perturbed by the mutant protein with expanded polyglutamine in the mouse striatum, a brain region with selective HD vulnerability. Using metabolically labeled tissues and immunoaffinity purification-mass spectrometry, we establish that polyglutamine-dependent modulation of HTT PPI abundances and relative stability starts at an ea

Psychosocial correlates of body esteem and disordered eating among sexual minority adolescent girls.

The present study examined whether body esteem mediates the associations between psychosocial factors, including peer victimization and parent-adolescent relationship quality, and multiple categories of disordered eating (DE) within a diverse sample of adolescent sexual minority (SM) girls. Participants were 528 girls, aged 14-18 years, recruited as part of a larger online study on LGBTQ + adolescent health. Participants anonymously completed self-report measures of parent-adolescent relationship quality, sexual orientation-based victimization, body esteem, and DE behaviors, including binge ea

Distribution patterns of torpedo maculopathy: Further evidence of a congenital retinal nerve fiber layer-driven etiology.

With fewer than 100 peer-reviewed cases reported in the world to date, the underlying etiology of torpedo maculopathy has remained elusive. In this literature review, we provide new evidence to better support, reject and unify claims regarding cause, diagnosis, and proper clinical management of this disease. We reviewed 44 case reports and case series, which included 77 patients (after exclusions). We additionally introduced 3 new cases from our clinical practice for a total of 80 cases. Ages at presentation ranged from 6 months old to 73 years old (mean: 24.2 years old). The nasal aspects of

Use of diet, nutritional supplements and exercise in HIV-infected patients receiving combination antiretroviral therapies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The use of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has improved the prognosis of HIV infection, but it has also been linked to a spectrum of body composition changes and metabolic alterations known as the lipodystrophy syndrome. Nutritional status could influence body composition changes. METHODS: We performed a systematic search of published peer-reviewed data on the effects of diet, nutrition support and exercise on body composition and metabolic complications in patients receiving cART. RESULTS: Few controlled studies, most of them with small sample size, were found. Oral nu

AIDS prevention in high-risk African American women: behavioral, psychological, and gender issues.

A three-year longitudinal intervention study was implemented to reduce high-risk drug and sexual behaviors in methadone-dependent African American women. Participants were recruited from four inner-city methadone maintenance programs and randomly assigned either to an eight-week peer counseling and leadership training group or to a control group. The 107 trainees and 97 controls completed pretests and posttests at two, four, and seven months. This paper focuses on final data related to the subjects' sexual beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors that put them at risk for HIV/AIDS. Reasons

Substance use clusters in a college sample: a multitheoretical approach.

Substance use factors were examined and cross-validated in a cluster analytic approach in two independent samples of college students: N = 291 and N = 602. Reported frequency, intensity, and amount of substance use were examined for beer, hard liquor, marijuana, amphetamines, barbiturates, psychedelics, cocaine, and heroin. Variables were reduced using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) to form four substance use composites. Composite scores were entered into two different methods of cluster analysis that each identified four distinct clusters of substance use groups. External validity was ob

A Social Network Theory-Based Investigation into the Characteristics of MSM in Virtual Communities.

Social networks significantly influence MSM's HIV prevention behaviors, with virtual communities serving as key interaction platforms. Using a Python web crawler, we analyzed 960 user profiles from Baidu Tieba's "Gay Bar" forum. The social network within this community exhibits a core-periphery structure, where a densely connected core facilitates effective information dissemination, while the majority of users reside in peripheral positions with limited and isolated connections. Relationships within the network are primarily formed based on shared interests rather than geographical proximity,

Identity concerns and older people's use of assistive technology: A scoping review.

This scoping review explores conceptualizations of identity in relation to older adults' use of assistive technology and describes patterns of AT use and emotional experiences associated with identity-related concerns. Searches were conducted in six databases (n = 1508) limited to peer-reviewed papers published between 2000 and 2022; resulting in the inclusion of 33 relevant papers. The literature evidences an array of overlapping conceptualizations within identity and self. Older adults' experiences with assistive technology are nuanced by ambivalent emotions; marked by both positive - autono

Blood-, Tissue- and Urine-Based Prognostic Biomarkers of Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma.

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare but aggressive neoplasm. Currently, there are few reliable and widely used prognostic biomarkers of this disease. The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic value of blood-, tissue- and urine-based biomarkers in patients with UTUC. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Cochrane and Embase databases. Case reports, editorials and non-peer-reviewed literature were excluded from the analysis. As a result, 94 articles were included in this review. We evaluated the impact of 22 blood-based, 13 tissue-based and

Disability terminology: the use of "disability," "disorder," and "illness" in academic writing.

PURPOSE: The ways in which words are used to describe and discuss people with disabilities has long been an area of social concern. Previous research has demonstrated that language can overtly and subtly influence cognitions and perceptions of individuals, but there is less research on how language relates to perceptions of individuals with disabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A content analysis of 236 peer-reviewed articles was performed to explore differences in the frequency of the use of "disability," "disorder," and "illness" in academic articles related to eight common conditions: deafn

Personal, social and environmental risk factors of problematic gambling among high school adolescents in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Understanding risk factors of problematic gambling is prerequisite to effective intervention design to alleviate the negative consequences of gambling. This study explored the personal, social and environmental risk factors of problematic gambling in four high schools in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, among students (N = 422) ranging from 12 to 21 years of age. Results from the cross-sectional survey showed that personal feelings (e.g., self-esteem, false perceptions about winning, drug abuse), social factors (e.g., peer influence, parental gambling), and environmental factors (e.g., accessibility of …
