The differential associations of reminiscence and exploratory travel with late-life psychological well-being: A prospective cohort study.

Leisure travel has been associated with better mental health in older adults, but it is unclear whether different travel motivations (remembering the past vs seeking new experiences) are differentially associated with anxiety and feelings of meaning in life, respectively. This study aimed to explore whether there are prospective associations between nostalgia-oriented and exploration-oriented travel motivations and follow-up anxiety symptoms and the sense of meaning in life among older adults and examine the possible underlying psychological pathways. This prospective cohort study included 548

Development and internal validation of a LASSO-based nomogram for predicting SAS-defined anxiety symptoms in obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms are common but often under-recognized in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Conventional polysomnographic severity indices may not fully capture the psychological burden of OSA. This study aimed to develop and internally validate a nomogram for clinically significant anxiety symptoms in patients with OSA. METHODS: A total of 787 patients with OSA were randomly divided into a training cohort (n=551) and a validation cohort (n=236) at a 7:3 ratio. Demographic characteristics, comorbidities, laboratory parameters, patient-reported scales, and polysomnograph

Autonomic correlates of social anxiety and embarrassment in shy and non-shy individuals.

Social anxiety and embarrassment are closely related constructs, both of which are relevant to the study of shyness. To examine the psychophysiological correlates of anxiety and embarrassment in relation to shyness, we measured autonomic arousal (heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, skin conductance level, and blushing response) in shy and non-shy female participants while they performed tasks designed to elicit either social anxiety or embarrassment. Results indicated that social anxiety and embarrassment are difficult to disentangle at the autonomic level. Blushing may be an important p

A partial loss of function allele of methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 predicts a human neurodevelopmental syndrome.

Rett Syndrome, an X-linked dominant neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by regression of language and hand use, is primarily caused by mutations in methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2). Loss of function mutations in MECP2 are also found in other neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, Angelman-like syndrome and non-specific mental retardation. Furthermore, duplication of the MECP2 genomic region results in mental retardation with speech and social problems. The common features of human neurodevelopmental disorders caused by the loss or increase of MeCP2 function suggest that even mo

Basal ganglia theta power indexes trait anxiety in people with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common and disabling in Parkinson's disease (PD), with troublesome anxiety occurring in one-third of patients. Management of anxiety in PD is challenging, hampered by insufficient insight into underlying mechanisms, lack of objective anxiety measurements, and largely ineffective treatments. In this study, we assessed the intracranial neurophysiological correlates of anxiety in PD patients treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the laboratory and at home. We hypothesized that low-frequency (theta-alpha) activity would be associated with anxiety. M

Impact of a multimedia teaching tool on parental anxiety and knowledge during the informed consent process.

PURPOSE: Before performing a surgical procedure, informed consent (IC) is obtained. Parents may exhibit anxiety and/or a desire for more knowledge during the IC process for their child. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of a multimedia intervention (MMI) versus conventional discussion on parental understanding and anxiety during the IC process for infants undergoing surgery for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. METHODS: A time-interrupted series design was employed over a 9-month period. In the first phase, conventional discussion for IC was performed. In the second phase, a MM

Neural correlates of anxiety sensitivity in panic disorder: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Panic disorder has been associated with dysfunctional neuropsychological dimensions, including anxiety sensitivity. Brain-imaging studies of the neural correlates of emotional processing have identified a network of structures that constitute the neural circuitry for emotions. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and insula, which are part of this network, are also involved in the processing of threat-related stimuli. The aim of the study was to investigate if neural activity in response to emotional stimuli in the cortico-limbic network is associated to anxiety

Does trait anxiety impair inhibitory control processes in an RSVP paradigm? Evidence from ERPs.

Attentional control theory (ACT) posits that anxiety impairs inhibitory control. However, whether this deficit is general or specific to negative distractors remains debated. This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate differences in inhibitory-control-related processing between individuals with high and low trait anxiety under varying emotional distractor contexts. The final analysis sample comprised 24 high-trait-anxiety (HTA) and 24 low-trait-anxiety (LTA) participants who completed a modified rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. They were instructed to identify

A cross-sectional and longitudinal network analysis approach to understanding connections among social anxiety components in youth.

As proposed in a prominent developmental model, social anxiety has different manifestations: social fear, shy temperament, anxious cognitions, and avoidance of social situations. Drawing from this model, we used the network approach to psychopathology to gain a detailed understanding of specific social anxiety components and their associations. The current article investigated (a) how social anxiety components are interconnected within a network, and (b) the consistency of the network over time, in a community sample of children and adolescents. Data from 3 waves of a longitudinal study were u

N-acetyl cysteine ameliorates depression-induced cognitive deficits by restoring the volumes of hippocampal subfields and associated neurochemical changes.

Depression is highly comorbid with anxiety disorders and associated with profound cognitive impairment. Moreover, cognitive deficits associated with hippocampal dysfunction are central in depression and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, depression is accompanied by glutamatergic dysfunction which can further impair the functioning of the hippocampus. Recent studies have shown that N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a glutamate modulator produces an antidepressant-like effect by normalization of the periterminal release of glutamate and/or antioxidant effects. However, the effects of repeated NAC treatment

Autonomic arousal in children of parents with and without social anxiety disorder: a high-risk study.

OBJECTIVE: Autonomic hyperarousal in social situations is considered a genetic vulnerability factor for social anxiety disorder (SAD), but so far it is unstudied in children at risk for developing SAD. We examined autonomic activity during socially stressful tasks in children of mothers and fathers with and without lifetime SAD to reveal possible biological mechanisms of intergenerational transmission of SAD. METHODS: One hundred ten children aged 4.5 years were asked to sing a song in front of an audience and watch back their performance in the presence of that audience. Heart rate (HR), hea

Differential involvement of dorsal raphe subnuclei in the regulation of anxiety- and panic-related defensive behaviors.

A wealth of evidence indicates that the dorsal raphe nucleus (DR) is not a homogenous structure, but an aggregate of distinctive populations of neurons that may differ anatomically, neurochemically and functionally. Other findings suggest that serotonergic neurons within the mid-caudal and caudal part of the DR are involved in anxiety processing while those within the lateral wings (lwDR) and ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG) are responsive to panic-evoking stimuli/situations. However, no study to date has directly compared the activity of 5-HT and non-5HT neurons within different subn

An assessment of the contributions of the pedunculopontine tegmental and cuneiform nuclei to anxiety and neophobia.

The pedunculopontine tegmental and cuneiform nuclei are adjacent structures in the mesopontine tegmentum. The pedunculopontine has attracted interest because of its extensive reciprocal connections with corticostriatal systems and possible role in complex behavioral and cognitive processes; the cuneiform is thought to be part of a neural system important for organizing defensive behaviors. Excitotoxic lesions of the pedunculopontine have been shown to affect a variety of complex functions, including learning and attention, but it has been suggested that a consequence of lesions here is the pro

Investigating the behavioral impact of tropical almond (Terminalia catappa L.) consumption: Anxiolytic effects and memory preservation in aged rats.

Terminalia catappa L. (TC) has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties, including antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. Considering the increased vulnerability to cognitive decline and anxiety in aging, we investigated the potential impact of TC on anxiety-like behavior, memory, and oxidative stress in aged Wistar rats. Male Wistar rats were used, including young adults (70 days old) and aged animals (17 months old). The aged rats were allocated into three groups: control (n = 11), TC500 (n = 12), and TC1000 (n = 12). TC was administered by oral gavage at doses of 500 mg/kg or

Integrating neurobiology and psychopathology into evidence-based treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common, chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by a persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment can occur. This disorder typically appears during the mid-adolescent years and is unremitting throughout life if not properly treated. SAD presents as two subtypes: the more common and debilitating generalized form, and the nongeneralized form, which consists predominantly of performance anxiety. The majority of patients with SAD have comorbid mental disorders, including mood, anxiety, and substance abuse. No single development th…
