BACKGROUND: Phenytoin, introduced in 1937 as an antiseizure medication, has since been reported to promote wound healing when applied as a topical agent. This study was undertaken to evaluate its effectiveness in chronic skin ulcers.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of a topical preparation of glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate to reduce pain related to osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.
METHODS: Sixty-three patients were randomized to receive either a topical glucosamine and chondroitin preparation or placebo to be used as required over an 8 week period. Efficacy was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain as well as the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and the SF-36 questionnaire.

A double-blind, crossover study was performed with a new topical aerosol steroid, flunisolide, administered every 12 hours over a period of eight weeks to 36 adult patients with perennial allergic rhinitis. Two children who had classic maple syrup urine disease developed an eruptive dermatitis when plasma isoleucine levels, leucine levels, or both fell below normal during periods of protein restriction. This case report describes a rare epitrichial sweat gland ductal carcinoma in a 14-year-old horse and is the first report of multiple carcinomas of this type in horses. Although several tumours developed, mostly on the distal extremities, over a 2-year period, the horse remained otherwise healthy. Topical treatment with imiquimod was successful for many of them.

A female is presented with multiple longstanding hypertrophic discoid lupus erythematosus lesions resistant to topical and systemic therapy for years. She suffered severe itching and pain localized to the lesions. Treatment with cryosurgery resulted in complete healing of the lesions, leaving slightly hypopigmented soft scars. There was no tendency of relapse during a follow-up period of ten years.
