Micro/Nano-plastics (MNPs), including microplastics (MPs; <5 mm) and nanoplastics (NPs; <100 nm), have become pervasive environmental pollutants due to extensive plastic production and insufficient recycling practices. These particles originate from the degradation of larger plastic materials through processes such as photo-oxidation, thermo-oxidation, and incomplete biodegradation, resulting in chemically reactive fragments that persist in air, water, and food. Once released, MNPs enter the human body primarily via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption, ultimately accumulating in vario

The present review provides the first analysis and synthesis of the available scientific information on the effects of anthropogenic contaminants on cephalopod embryos, paralarvae, and juveniles. We evaluated 46 articles published between 1970 and 2023 that focused on trace elements (69%), pharmaceutical compounds (11%), persistent organic compounds (11%), and plastics (9%). To date, the greatest scientific effort has originated from Europe and Asia (France [57%], China [9%], Italy [7%], and Spain [4%]), with few reports available from the rest of the world. Most studies focused on species of

Mercury (Hg), a pervasive environmental pollutant, poses a significant threat to ecosystems and human health due to its complex biogeochemical transformations. Emitted from both natural sources and anthropogenic activities, Hg undergoes atmospheric transport, deposition, and intricate chemical conversions, including microbial methylation, which produces the highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). This bioavailable form of Hg accumulates in aquatic food webs, leading to biomagnification and severe ecological consequences. The environmental fate of Hg is governed by dynamic interactions between abiot

As global food demand is projected to rise in the future due to population growth, animal husbandry has been increasingly promoted worldwide. Yet, pharmaceuticals are extensively used for animal husbandry to prevent disease outbreaks, possibly posing human health risks via consumption of pharmaceutical-contaminated animals. Using a typical bullfrog farm as the study site, this study assessed the accumulation of pharmaceuticals in bullfrogs at different ages (juveniles vs. adults) from different origins (cultured vs. wild). The health risk of bullfrog consumption was then evaluated with the con

Humans produce 350 million metric tons of plastic waste per year, leading to microplastic pollution and widespread environmental contamination, particularly in aquatic environments. This subsequently impacts aquatic organisms in myriad ways, yet the vast majority of research is conducted in marine, rather than freshwater systems. In this study, we exposed eggs and hatchlings of the Chinese soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) to 80-nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and monitored the impacts on development, behavior and the gut microbiome. We demonstrate that 80-nm PS-NPs can penetrate

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are pervasive organic pollutants recognized for their persistence and bio-toxicity. This study investigated the hepatotoxic mechanisms of SCCPs at environmentally relevant concentration (0.7 μg/kg). The results showed that SCCPs exposure in mice resulted in dysregulated blood and liver lipids, marked by elevated cholesterol levels. Additionally, liver function was compromised, as indicated by increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase. Histopathological examination of liver tissue post-SCCPs expos

Decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209), a persistent organic pollutant, is linked to a great number of health problems, the most severe of which impact the liver due to its role in the elimination and degradation of exogenous harmful substances. Though the hepatotoxicity of BDE-209 has been observed, its underlying mechanism is yet unknown. The purpose of this study is to thoroughly investigate the hepatotoxicity of BDE-209 and its molecular processes in broilers by subjecting 120 male broilers to varied concentrations of BDE-209 for 42 days. We observed that the bioaccumulation of BDE-209 in

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a type of persistent organic pollutant (POP). Our previous study demonstrated that exposure to 0.5-50 μg/kg bw PCB138 during postnatal days (PND) 3-21 led to elevated serum uric acid (UA) levels and kidney injury in adult male mice. Given that the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) is significantly lower in women than in men, it is worth investigating whether POP-induced HUA and its secondary kidney injury have sexual dimorphism. Herein, we exposed female mice to 0.5-50 μg/kg bw PCB138 during PND 3-21, resulting in elevated serum UA levels, but without causi

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent and highly toxic pollutants, which can accumulate in organisms and produce toxic effects, especially damaging the function of thyroid hormones. So far, the molecular mechanism of PCBs mixture and their metabolites interfering with thyroid hormones has not been studied thoroughly except for individual compounds. In this study, PubMed, Web of Science, and STITCH databases were used to search PCBs and their corresponding target proteins. The intersection of PCBs and thyroid hormone dysfunction target proteins was obtained from GeneCards. The "compou

Bio-based fertilizers including farmyard manure, sewage sludge, meat and bone meal, composts, digestates and derived products are nutrient-rich fertilizers. They deliver organic matter but may pose the risk to contaminate soils by pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, resistance genes or pathogens. Manure and sewage sludge are increasingly used in biogas plants for energy production with the residue being used as fertilizer. It is therefore important to understand the fate of pharmaceuticals during anaerobic digestion. In the present study, 29 biogas plants from three countries wer

The important number of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) available on the market along with their potential adverse effects in the aquatic ecosystems, lead to the development of prioritization methods, which allow choosing priority molecules to monitor based on a set of selected criteria. Due to the large volumes of API used in hospitals, an increasing attention has been recently paid to their effluents as a source of environmental pollution. Based on the consumption data of a Swiss university hospital, about hundred of API has been prioritized following an OPBT approach (Occurrence, Pe

Humic acids (HA) are ubiquitous redox-active compounds of natural aquatic and soil systems. Here we studied the potential of HA as reductants for chlorinated aliphatic pollutants. To avoid artifacts potentially involved when studying chemically reduced HA, we prepared electrochemically reduced soil, aquatic and synthetic HA, and anthrahydroquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid (AHQDS), a model compound for hydroquinone moieties in HA. Both reduced HA and AHQDS reduced hexachloroethane (HCE) at appreciable rates. Some reduction of HCE by HA, however, occurred even before electrochemical reduction of the

Phthalate esters (PAEs), which are widely used as plasticizers in various industrial processes, pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health as emerging pollutants. This study aimed to compare different methods for extracting PAEs, quantifying their concentrations, and assessing the health risks associated with exposure to these contaminants. Based on the reviewed studies, solid-phase extraction (SPE) was the preferred sample preparation technique in approximately 60 % of cases due to its efficiency, low solvent consumption, and strong enrichment capabilities. Moreover, gas chromatogr

BACKGROUND: Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants associated with adverse health outcomes in humans. Although they are associated with autism spectrum disorder and behavioural outcomes, whether PFAS affect brain development is unclear. We aimed to characterise the relationship between maternal PFAS and brain structure and function in typically developing children.
METHODS: This study was set within the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study, a prospective observational study that enrolled mothers from three clinics in Turku, Finland, during th…

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and methylmercury (MeHg) are persistent organic pollutants accumulating in the food chain. Pre- and neonatal exposure to these neurotoxicants may affect brain development and lead to long-lasting alterations in cerebral function, which can result in motor alterations in youth and/or adulthood. Some neurotoxicants induce gender specific effects. The aims of the present work were to: (1) assess the effects of developmental exposure to MeHg, PCB 153 or PCB 126 on spontaneous locomotor and vertical activity and motor coordination when the rats are 2-month old; (2) …

Microplastic (MP) pollution and biological invasions are major stressors in coastal marine ecosystems, yet the ecological and physiological responses associated with their co-occurrence remain poorly understood. This study assessed the potential relationship between MP contamination, the presence of the invasive macroalga Batophora occidentalis, and the physiological state of the sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa in S'Estany des Peix lagoon (Formentera, western Mediterranean). MPs were measured in sediment, water, and tissues (intestines and gills), while oxidative stress and detoxification bio

Long-term open-air storage of coal gangue (CG) can generate leachates containing oxidizable components contributing to chemical oxygen demand (COD), together with sulfate (SO42-) and fluoride (F-), yet their source-term behavior remains poorly understood. In this study, batch and column leaching tests were conducted on multi-source CG samples and combined with ToF-SIMS (surface compositional mapping), solid-phase TOC gradient leaching, and PHREEQC-XGBoost-SHAP modeling (coupled geochemical-machine learning analysis). Batch-leachate COD levels ranged from 4.6 to 68.0 mg/L, while SO42- and F- co

A surge has been observed in the use of pesticides to boost agricultural yield in order to feed the continuously increasing human population. Different types and classes of broad-spectrum insecticides are in use, and the number is constantly increasing with the introduction of new ones. Keeping in view the broad-spectrum effects of organophosphate pesticides including Malathion (MLN), their use is continuously increasing without appraising their toxic impacts on non-target organisms. The continuous rise in the use of MLN has led to its presence, persistence, and transport to water bodies globa
