A Validation Study of the BRIEF-2 Among Kindergarteners and First Graders At-Risk for Behavior Problems.

Early identification of executive dysfunction and timely school-based intervention efforts are critical for students at risk for problematic behaviors during early elementary school. The original Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning (BRIEF) was designed to measure real-world behavioral manifestations of executive functioning, neurocognitive processes critical for school success. With the updated BRIEF-2, independent validation is needed with kindergarten and first grade students at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders. Thus, using item level analyses, we examined the facto

Relationships between dimensions of emotional experience, rumination, and nonsuicidal self-injury: An application of the Emotional Cascade Model.

OBJECTIVE: The Emotional Cascade Model posits that nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) functions to distract from cascades of intense negative emotion and rumination. We investigated the moderating role of rumination in the relationships between reactivity, intensity, and perseveration of emotion and NSSI. METHOD: University students (N = 992) completed self-report measures of self-injury, emotional reactivity, intensity and perseveration, and rumination. RESULTS: Together, the dimensions of negative emotion were associated with NSSI, but none contributed unique variance. For positive emotion, re

Is context a crucial factor in distinguishing between intrusions and obsessions in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder?

OBJECTIVE: Some cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) posit that intrusions exist on a continuum with obsessions; others consider that they may be unrelated phenomena that differ in the context where they occur. We aimed to examine and compare, at two different moments, the context of the occurrence of intrusions and obsessions. METHOD: Sixty-eight patients with OCD completed an interview appraising their most upsetting obsession and intrusion. RESULTS: At their onset, the obsessions/intrusions were associated with experiencing negative emotional states and life events, and

The interrater reliability of Elizur's hostility systems and Holt's aggression variables: a meta-analytical review.

We provide a meta-analytic review of interrater reliability for scoring the 2 most commonly studied Rorschach (2003) aggression measures: (a) The Elizur (1949) Hostility Scale and its main derivative scoring systems (Holtzman, Thorpe, Swartz, & Herron, 1961; Murstein, 1956) and (b) Holt's (1977, 2005) aggression variables. Substantial reliability was observed for both Elizur's hostility score (e.g., weighted mean summary score correlation = .91, N = 1,279) and Holt's aggression variables (e.g., weighted mean summary score correlation = .84, N = 226). These meta-analytic data suggest that like

Development of covert and overt hostility scales from the Buss-Durkee Inventory.

The purpose of this study was to develop covert and overt hostility scales from the Buss-Durkee Inventory. First, 22 covert hostility and 29 overt hostility items were identified by the authors. Second, an item analysis was done to assess the content saturation of the individual items on these scales. This analysis yielded the final form for 7 items for covert hostility and 14 for overt hostility. Cronbach alphas for the covert and overt scales were .67 and .77, respectively, and their intercorrelation was .08. Correlations for these Buss-Durkee scales with several existing measures of anger e

Psychometric properties of the Wife Abuse Inventory.

It is estimated that approximately 50% of all married couples experience violence during their relationship (Lewis, 1985). The present study (N = 305) investigated the psychometric properties of the Wife Abuse Inventory (WAI), which was designed to identify women at risk for abuse. The WAI was found to be internally consistent, and evidence was obtained for the validity of the WAI as an indicator of the potential for being abused by one's spouse. A factor analysis indicated that the WAI measures two main factors, emotional and physical abuse, and a moderate correlation between the WAI and the

[Psychogenic voice disorders. Contribution of clinical psychology].

Only a few psychological papers deal with functional dysphonia. Even fewer empirical studies are concerned with the importance of variations in personality and neurotic behavioural patterns that are typical of functional dysphonia. The enumeration of other functional disorders is important. We suggest that difficulties in self-confidence, social competence, and social fear as well as an increase in control of emotions contribute to the genesis of functional dysphonia. In order to reveal the psychological factors in the diagnosis of dysphonia, every phoniatric diagnosis must be supplemented by

Personality traits and cortical structure link childhood maltreatment to impulsivity.

Background: Childhood maltreatment is associated with behavioural dysregulation, including heightened impulsivity, but the psychological and neurobiological pathways linking early adversity to impaired self-regulation remain unclear. Methods: This study tested theory-informed statistical mediation models to examine whether specific childhood maltreatment subtypes were associated with impulsivity through region-specific cortical thickness and personality traits. Sixty-one healthy adults completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, NEO Five-Factor Inventory, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and

Associations of personality traits with actigraphic sleep in middle-aged and older adults.

Although prior studies have examined associations of personality traits with sleep, most have investigated self-reported sleep, been cross-sectional, and focused on younger and middle-aged adults. We investigated associations of personality with actigraphic sleep parameters and changes in sleep in 398 cognitively normal adults aged 40-95 years (M ± SD = 70.1 ± 12.0) in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Participants completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and 6.61 days +/-1.01 nights of wrist actigraphy at the same study visit. Participants with wrist actigraphy at m…

Borderline personality features in relationship to childhood trauma in unipolar depressive and bipolar disorders.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma, including emotional neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, may contribute to borderline personality features like affective instability, identity problems, negative relationships, and self-harm. This study aims to explore how different types of childhood trauma affect these features in bipolar versus unipolar depressive disorders. METHODS: We included 839 participants of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) with a lifetime diagnosis of major depressive disorder single episode (MDDS; N = 443), recurrent major depressive diso

Network analysis of the associations between personality traits, cognitive functioning, and inflammatory markers in elderly individuals without dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Lower cognitive functioning in old age has been associated with personality traits or systemic inflammatory markers. Associations have also been found between personality traits and inflammatory markers. However, no study has explored the inter-relationships between these three components simultaneously. The present study aims to better understand the inter-relationships among personality traits, inflammatory markers, and cognitive performance in elderly individuals without dementia. METHODS: This study utilizes a network analysis approach, a statistical method that allows visua

Implication of the DGKH genotype in openness to experience, a premorbid personality trait of bipolar disorder.

AIMS: The diacylglycerol kinase η gene (DGKH) is one of the few replicated risk genes for bipolar disorder. Meanwhile, specific personality traits, especially openness to experience, have been suggested as premorbid personality traits of the disorder. The aim of the present study was to examine the relation of the DGKH genotype with broad dimensions of personality, to obtain further evidence for its implication in the etiology of bipolar disorder. METHODS: The subjects were 319 Japanese healthy volunteers. Personality was assessed by the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised, which has the neurot…

Incremental prediction and moderating role of the perceived emotional intelligence over aggressive behavior.

The aim of this research was to explore the influence of Perceived Emotional Intelligence (PEI) on aggression dimensions (Physical Aggression, Verbal Aggression, Hostility, and Anger) above and beyond the effects of gender, age, and personality traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience), as well as the moderating role of PEI on the relationship between personality and aggressive behavior, among young adults. The Trait Meta-Mood Scale, the Big-Five Inventory, and the Aggression Questionnaire were administered to a 313 Spanish community sampl

Relationship between alexithymia and dependent personality disorder: a dimensional analysis.

The present study had two aims and used two different samples. The first aim was to determine if alexithymia and dependent personality disorder (DPD) are distinct or overlapping constructs. The second aim was to determine the specificity and the stability of the relationship between alexithymia and DPD. The first study used exploratory principal components analysis (PCA) in a sample of 477 non-clinical subjects who completed three questionnaires measuring alexithymia (Twenty item Toronto Alexithymia Scale, i.e. TAS-20), dependent personality disorder (Dependent Personality Questionnaire, i.e.

A 37-year prospective study of neuroticism and extraversion in women followed from mid-life to late life.

OBJECTIVE: Personality traits are presumed to endure over time, but the literature regarding older age is sparse. Furthermore, interpretation may be hampered by the presence of dementia-related personality changes. The aim was to study stability in neuroticism and extraversion in a population sample of women who were followed from mid-life to late life. METHOD: A population-based sample of women born in 1918, 1922 or 1930 was examined with the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) in 1968-1969. EPI was assessed after 37 years in 2005-2006 (n = 153). Data from an interim examination after 24 yea…

The relevance of personality assessment in patients with hyperventilation symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Relatively few data are available concerning the relations between hyperventilation symptoms and general personality traits in clinical populations. A clear picture of the personality traits associated with hyperventilation symptoms could enhance early detection of those individuals who are at risk for developing hyperventilation. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of general personality in hyperventilation syndrome. METHOD: Patients (N = 364) with symptoms not explained by an organic disease and supposedly caused by hyperventilation completed the NEO Five-Factor Inv
