BACKGROUND AND AIM: Maritime piracy is a worrying phenomenon. Its recurrence in the last few years iscausing several problems to the safety of maritime routes. In spite of the number of seafarers kidnappedand maintained in captivity, psychological/mental disorders developed in victims of these criminal actshave not been investigated. This study has assessed psychological consequences of kidnapping in a groupof Italian seafarers held in captivity from 7 to 10 months.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four Italian seafarers were examined at the 5th month after release. An initial, semi-structured intervie

OBJECTIVE: We estimate the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD) among older adults and compare them with that of younger adults at the national level.
METHOD: We analysed data on older adults from the National Mental Health Survey of India undertaken across 6 regions and 12 states of India during 2015-16. Multi-stage cluster sampling technique was adopted which permitted state level and subsequently pooled national estimates. Mini International NeuroPsychiatric Interview (MINI) adult version 6.0 was used for measuring psychiatric morbidity.
RESULTS: Older adults had a higher lifetime

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article identifies research trends and synthesizes information from recent studies of avoidant personality disorder (AVPD).
RECENT FINDINGS: AVPD and social anxiety disorder (SAD) share genetic vulnerability, but may have distinct environmental risk factors that shape qualitative differences. Negative self-concept, shame proneness, and interpersonal hypersensitivity are characteristic of AVPD and may be predisposed to by heritable traits of high negative affectivity and low positive affectivity, and experiences of neglectful or emotionless parents. The interpersonal di

Over the past 25 years, our understanding of the risks conferred by "behavioral inhibition to the unfamiliar" (BI) has grown tremendously, yet many questions remain. BI represents the persistent tendency to show extreme reticence, fearfulness, or avoidance in novel situations or with unfamiliar people. Prospective studies of high-risk offspring, selected community children, and unselected epidemiologic samples converge to suggest that BI confers specific risk for social anxiety disorder in early and middle childhood and adolescence. Later outcomes are less clear, with some studies suggesting a

The authors compared 25 treated and 58 untreated subjects with simple phobia uncomplicated by other lifetime anxiety disorders. The treated individuals reported more phobias involving dogs and cats, elevators, and transportation; most had multiple phobias; and many experienced panic attacks in the context of their phobias. The untreated individuals typically reported only one phobia, which was often related to blood-injury and was seldom complicated by panic symptoms.

Fear is an evolutionarily adaptive mechanism that enables organisms to detect and respond to potential threats. Over the past century, theories of fear have evolved from Pavlovian and behavioral frameworks to neuroscientific models that emphasize specific neural circuits, neurotransmission, and plasticity. This pictorial review synthesizes key concepts underlying the neuroscience of fear, starting with a historical narrative of fear as conceptualized by conditioning and behaviorism theories, to the roles of different neurobiology structures, networks, to concepts of memory consolidation, recon

This Letter to the Editor addresses the article by Ali et al. on neurophobia among Egyptian medical students. While acknowledging the study's relevance and methodological strengths, the letter highlights a key limitation: the absence of a conceptual framework to explain the deeper pedagogical and epistemological roots of neurophobia. Drawing from a qualitative study conducted in Brazil, the letter suggests that factors such as curricular fragmentation, positivist traditions, and lack of interdisciplinary integration may contribute to neurophobia beyond the commonly cited issues of neuroanatomi

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) is more common than expected in healthy populations and can cause psychological disorders, leading to feelings of frustration and failure due to poor navigation. Due to the strict relation and the frequent association between DTD and psychological disorders, it is crucial to understand the impact of spatial anxiety and specific phobias, such as driving-related fear (DRF), on one's ability to autonomously navigate in the environment. Here, we report the case of a girl with DTD and DRF who struggled to learn driving routes due to her phobia. Her s

BACKGROUND: Neurophobia is a global phenomenon, that influences both medical students and postgraduate trainees. We aimed to analyze the prevalence of neurophobia by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on neurophobia, and potential associated risk factors.
METHODS: The search was done in the PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases for studies reporting neurophobia among medical students and young doctors for the period up to March 18, 2024. The overall prevalence and scores of four subcomponents of neurophobia were pooled. The potential heterogeneity was tested through me

BACKGROUND: Organ donation has been claimed as a prosocial behavior to prolong the recipient's life and deliver great love. However, the supply-demand ratio of organs in China is highly unbalanced. Being entangled with multiple factors derived from individual and supra-individual levels, organ donation in China is important but sensitive. Previous scholars usually depended on obtrusive approaches to explore the facilitators and hindrances of organ donation, which is hard to discover genuine perceptions toward organ donation. Besides, relatively limited scholarly attention has been paid to what

It can happen that one behaves in a supposedly embarrassing or insufficient manner; however, short-term feelings such as shame or self-doubt usually remain without significance. However, if there is excessive and persistent fear or significant avoidance behaviour, it may be a case of social anxiety disorder (SAS). This article provides an overview of the current status of the aetiology, diagnosis and therapy of SAS.

BACKGROUND: People with needle fear experience not only anxiety and stress but also vasovagal reactions (VVR), including nausea, dizziness, sweating, pallor changes, or even fainting. However, the mechanism behind needle fear and the VVR response are not yet well understood. The aim of our study was to explore whether fluctuations in facial temperature in several facial regions are related to the level of experienced vasovagal reactions, in a simulated blood donation.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We recruited 45 students at Tilburg University and filmed them throughout a virtual blood donation p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There are multiple variables that influence fear of death, as well as attitudes towards it, including age, religiosity, emotional and cultural aspects. Due to the proximity to death, the study of attitudes and death-related anxiety and the variables that influence it in the elderly population is of great relevance. The aim of the present study was to compare the levels of death anxiety, fear of death, attitudes towards death and associated emotional aspects (anxiety and depression) in older adults from 2different cultures, Western and Arab.

BACKGROUND: The predominant definition of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) conflates FCR with fear of progression (FOP). However, this assumption has never been tested. Importantly, if FCR and FOP are distinct and have different predictors, existing interventions for FCR may not be equally effective for survivors who fear progression rather than recurrence of their disease. The present study aimed to determine whether FCR and FOP are empirically equivalent; and whether they are predicted by the same theoretically derived variables.
METHODS: Three hundred and eleven adults with a history of bre
