Curriculum Innovations: Developing an EEG Workshop for Hands-on Training in Electroencephalography During Resident Rotation in Clinical Neurophysiology.

A 3-hour hands-on EEG workshop was conducted as a part of resident rotation in clinical neurophysiology to determine its feasibility and edu … cording to the 10-20 System on a resident volunteer by the EEG technologist. Activation procedures (photic stimulation and hyperventilation) were demonstrated to the residents during the 25-minute recording. A board-certified epileptologist later reviewed the record with the residents. Resident and EEG technologist feedback on the workshop was obtained via non-forma …

Brivaracetam or levetiracetam in status epilepticus?: Lessons from the photosensitivity model.

First, a short history is given of the use of the EEG as a biomarker of efficacy in anti-seizure medication (ASM) development. The generalized epileptiform EEG response to Intermittent Photic Stimulation (IPS), the photoparoxysmal EEG response or PPR, in particular, is a reliable reproducible measure since the 1950s. Over time, a "Photosensitivity Model", testing within the same patients the impact of potential new oral ASMs, along with dose-ranging data, on PPRs, has been developed successfully. The classical Photosensitivity Model consists of IPS and blood sampling for ASM measurement perfor…

Electroencephalography in Orthostatic Tremor: A Prospective Study of 30 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic tremor (OT) is characterized by a sensation of instability while standing, associated with high frequency (1318 Hz) … al background, normal drowsiness and/or stage 2 sleep, and normal responses to hyperventilation and photic stimulation. These normal results persisted during stance. EEG abnormalities were found in 3 subjects (anterior-mid temporal slow activity), but were not position-dependent and were judged unlikely to be related to OT. Tremor artifact while standing was noted i …

mTOR signaling regulates central and peripheral circadian clock function.

The circadian clock coordinates physiology and metabolism. mTOR (mammalian/mechanistic target of rapamycin) is a major intracellular sensor that integrates nutrient and energy status to regulate protein synthesis, metabolism, and cell growth. Previous studies have identified a key role for mTOR in regulating photic entrainment and synchrony of the central circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Given that mTOR activities exhibit robust circadian oscillations in a variety of tissues and cells including the SCN, here we continued to investigate the role of mTOR in orchestrating aut

Increased photosensitivity following short sleep in sleep deprived patients.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine the effect of short day-time sleep on photoparoxysmal epileptic activity in sleep-deprived patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed video-EEG recordings performed between 2003 and 2015. All recordings following at least four hours of sleep deprivation, including intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) both before and after sleep with any form of epileptiform activity were included. The study group was divided into four subgroups: (1) no photoparoxysmal response (PPR) group, with epileptiform activities other than PPRs; (2) increment group, with PPR dura…

Wireless, Adaptable and Fully Implantable Battery-powered Devices for Optical Stimulation of the Spinal Cord in Small Rodents.

Existing technologies for optogenetic neuromodulation often rely on external power transmission or are only partially implantable, limiting their utility in mobile tissues such as the spinal cord. Here, we introduce a fully implantable, battery-powered system for light delivery to precise segments of the spinal cord in freely behaving small rodents, with operation and wireless recharging possible in any animal housing environments. Built from commercially available components with minimal in-house fabrication, the system integrates low-power electronic design, ultra-thin and flexible probes wi

Retinal and extra-retinal contributions of blinking to perceptual alternation in bistable apparent motion.

Blinks serve not only to maintain ocular lubrication, but may also contribute to visual processing, although their functional role remains poorly understood. Recent research has shown that spontaneous and voluntary blinks serve distinct functions in perceptual competition involving binocular interactions (Sato & Kimura, 2024). To disentangle the retinal and extra-retinal contributions of blinking, this study investigated how different types of blinks affect perceptual alternation using a bistable apparent motion stimulus where the perceived motion direction alternates between vertical and hori

Protocol for gaze estimation using facial orientation in marmosets during a social preference test.

Here, we present an open-source platform for evaluating social preference in common marmosets using image-based visual stimuli and gaze estimation. We describe the procedures for setting up the behavioral test, training marmosets to perform the test, and analyzing the resulting data with the provided code. This platform enables simple and noninvasive assessment of social attention toward social visual stimuli. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Harbers et al.1.

Noninvasive Suppression of Responses to Threat Using Focused Ultrasonic Waves.

The processing of threat- and fear-related responses is known to involve the amygdala and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Malignant activity in these nuclei is associated with several important disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. A noninvasive approach to modulate these deep brain circuits could provide novel treatment options for these disorders, but current noninvasive approaches cannot access these targets directly. This study modulates these nuclei using transcranial low-intensity focused ultrasound in nonhuman primates. The ultras

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Binocular Interaction in Anisometropic Amblyopia Revealed by Classification Image.

PURPOSE: To explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of binocular interaction in anisometropic amblyopia. METHODS: Ten anisometropic amblyopes (26.2 ± 3.8 years) and 10 normal people (23.6 ± 2.0 years) participated in this study. The noise stimulus was a sequence of 9 frames, each consisting of 11 vertical, spatially adjacent bars whose luminance were randomly sampled. The participants detected whether a brighter bar (target) appeared in the noise stream under two monocular and two dichoptic conditions. The spatiotemporal perceptive field (PF) in each condition was obtained with subsecond and subd

Selective control of prefrontal neural timescales by parietal cortex.

The frontal eye field (FEF) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) are key hubs of the dorsal attention network, yet how parietal inputs shape prefrontal circuit temporal dynamics and attentional computations remains largely unknown. We measured intrinsic timescales of FEF neurons in male rhesus macaques and examined their changes during PPC inactivation. We observed two distinct classes of FEF neurons based on their intrinsic timescales: short-timescale neurons (~25 ms) and long-timescale neurons (~100 ms). Short-timescale neurons showed stronger transient visual responses, suggesting a role in

Similar eye movements in aphantasia and visualizers during mental map exploration.

During visual mental imagery, our eyes tend to reproduce patterns of movement similar to those observed in visual perception, even in the absence of external stimuli. However, imagery vividness varies along a spectrum, with congenital aphantasia at the lower extreme, where individuals report a reduced or absent ability to visualize voluntarily. Nevertheless, they can typically state from memory that Bordeaux is to the left of Paris on a map of France while denying having conjured any mental image. What cognitive mechanisms underlie this dissociation? Some theories suggest aphantasia stems from

Neural coding of multiple motion speeds in visual cortical area MT.

Motion speed is a salient cue for visual segmentation, yet how the visual system represents and differentiates multiple speeds remains unclear. Here, we investigated the encoding and decoding of multiple speeds. We first characterized the perceptual capacity of human and macaque subjects to segment overlapping stimuli moving at different speeds. We then determined how neurons in area MT of macaque monkeys represent multiple speeds. We found that the responses of MT neurons to two speeds showed a robust bias toward the faster speed component. This faster-speed bias occurred when both speeds wer

The refresh rate of overhead projectors may affect the perception of fast moving objects: a modelling study.

Using simulation and a simple mathematical argument we argue that the refresh rate of overhead projectors, used in experiments on the visual system, may impact the perception of fast moving objects already at the retinal and cortical level (V1).

Investigating mental simulation during sentence comprehension in aphantasia.

Aphantasia is a condition in which individuals do not consciously experience visual imagery. There is ongoing debate concerning whether language comprehension involves visual imagery or only unconscious mental simulation (modality-specific perceptual reactivation). To test this directly, we investigated mental simulation during sentence comprehension in a group of individuals with aphantasia. We compared aphantasics to controls on their response time and accuracy on a sentence-picture verification task. In two experiments, participants read sentences (e.g., Melissa's dog was hard to find in th

Baseline dynamics in human visual behaviour.

Humans perceive their visual environment by directing their eyes towards relevant objects. The deployment of visual attention depends substantially on stimulus properties, higher cognitive processes, and biases and constraints of the visual system. Numerous models describe human eye movements depending on the task or content. However, there is no universal, context-invariant model of human gaze behaviour. Here, we show that statistical regularities can be utilised to model human gaze behaviour regardless of task, observer, and stimulus. Using a context-agnostic eye movement model with a fixed
