The circadian rhythm of thermoregulation in Japanese quail. II. Multioscillator control.

Most biochemical, physiological, and behavioral processes in vertebrates show significant daily rhythms. Under constant conditions, these rhythms exhibit an endogenous periodicity around 24 h showing that they are driven by an internal circadian clock. In Japanese quail, the circadian clock driving activity and body temperature rhythms is functionally organized as a dual-oscillator system. Under certain conditions, such as switching birds from light:dark (LD) 12:12 to continuous darkness (DD), the body temperature rhythm splits into two circadian components that free-run independently before r

Frequent Shifts During Chronic Jet Lag Uncouple Liver Rhythms From the Light Cycle in Male Mice.

Circadian disruption is pervasive in modern society and associated with increased risk of disease. Chronic jet lag paradigms are popular experimental tools aiming to emulate human circadian disruption experienced during rotating and night shift work. Chronic jet lag induces metabolic phenotypes tied to liver and systemic functions, yet lack of a clear definition for how rhythmic physiology is impaired under these conditions hinders the ability to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms. Here, we compared 2 common chronic jet lag paradigms and found that neither induced arrythmicity of the

Mitochondrial proteomic adaptations to daily torpor in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Hibernation is an adaptive strategy that conserves energy in response to environmental challenges. While mitochondrial proteomic adaptations are well-documented in deep hibernators, the proteomic changes underlying daily torpor remain less clear. We investigated mitochondrial proteomic adaptations in the liver of a daily hibernator, the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus), across different hibernation phases. Hamsters were maintained under long-day (summer) or short-day photoperiods (winter), to induce torpor. Livers from summer, torpor, and interbout euthermia phases were analyzed by liqui…

Rapid Jetlag Resetting of Behavioral, Physiological, and Molecular Rhythms in Proestrous Female Mice.

A gradual adaptation to a shifted light-dark (LD) cycle is a key element of the circadian clock system and believed to be controlled by the central circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Endocrine factors have a strong influence on the regulation of the circadian clock network and alter acute photic responses of the SCN clock. In females, endocrine function depends on the stage of the ovarian cycle. So far, however, little is known about the effect of the estrous cycle on behavioral and molecular responses to shifts in the LD rhythm. Based on this, we investigated whether estr

Heart Rate Variability During Nocturnal Sleep and Daytime Naps in Patients With Narcolepsy Type 1 and Type 2.

PURPOSE: Heart rate variability is a noninvasive measure of autonomic function. The aim of this study was to determine the risk of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction during sleep in patients with narcolepsy. The effect of daytime napping was also examined in patients with narcolepsy type 1 and type 2. METHODS: Polysomnography recordings and multiple sleep latency tests from 11 patients with narcolepsy type 1 (N1) and 20 patients with narcolepsy type 2 (N2) were included and compared with 12 healthy controls. Heart rate variability values (measured by time- and frequency-domain parameters) w

Effects of a long-day light programme on the motility and membrane integrity of cooled-stored and cyropreserved semen in Shetland pony stallions.

Increasing day length in spring stimulates reproductive functions in horses. In this study, we have analysed the effect of artificial long days on the quality of cooled-stored and cryopreserved semen in Shetland stallions. Stallions of the treatment group (AL, n = 8) were exposed to 16 h light and 8h darkness from 15th December to 20th March while control stallions (CON, n = 7) were kept under natural photoperiod. Semen was collected once weekly and processed for cooled-storage and cryopreservation once per month. Total and progressive motility and percentage of membrane intact spermatozoa wer…

Cocaine-induced sensitization correlates with testosterone in male Japanese quail but not with estradiol in female Japanese quail.

Research has indicated that gonadal hormones may mediate behavioral and biological responses to cocaine. Estrogen, in particular, has been shown to increase behavioral responding to cocaine in female rats relative to male rats. The current study investigated the effect of cocaine on locomotor activity and hormonal correlates in male and female Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). In Japanese quail, circulating hormone levels can be manipulated without surgical alterations via modifying the photoperiod. Male and female quail were housed on either 8L:16D (light:dark) or 16L:8D (light:dark) cycle …

Melatonin affects the temporal pattern of vocal signatures in birds.

In humans and other animals, melatonin is involved in the control of circadian biological rhythms. Here, we show that melatonin affects the … isrupt circadian rhythmicity. This effect was reversible because signal duration increased when the photoperiod was returned to the previous LD schedule. We then tested whether this effect was directly related to melatonin by removal of the pineal gland, which is the main production site of circulating melatonin. A shortening of the song duration was observed …

Day or night administration of ketamine and pentobarbital differentially affect circadian rhythms of pineal melatonin secretion and locomotor activity in rats.

BACKGROUND: Surgery with general anesthesia disturbs circadian rhythms, which may lead to postoperative sleep disorders and delirium in patients. However, it is unclear how circadian rhythms are affected by different anesthetics administered at different times during the rest-activity cycle. We hypothesized that pentobarbital (an agonist at the γ-aminobutyric acid A receptors) and ketamine (an antagonist at the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors) would have differential effects on circadian rhythms, and these effects would also be influenced by the time of their administration (the active versus r

Period and phase control in a multioscillatory circadian system (Iguana iguana).

The circadian system of the lizard Iguana iguana is composed of several independent pacemakers that work in concert: the pineal gland, retinae of the lateral eyes, and a fourth oscillator presumed to be located in the hypothalamus. These pacemakers govern the circadian expression of multiple behaviors and physiological processes, including rhythms in locomotor activity, endogenous body temperature, electroretinogram, and melatonin synthesis. The numerous, easily measurable rhythmic outputs make the iguana an ideal organism for examining the contributions of individual oscillators and their int

Influence of light/dark, seasonal and lunar cycles on the nuclear size of the pinealocytes of the rat.

Morphological and physiological studies suggest a possible division of the pineal parenchyma into an external or "cortical" and another central or "medullar" layer. We have studied the possible influence of the light/dark, seasonal and lunar cycles on the nuclear size of the pinealocytes of the rat in both the hypothetical "cortical" and "medullar" layers. Forty male Wistar rats were used. Experiment was carried out in two seasons, winter and spring, two lunar phases, full moon and new moon, and the two circadian phases, photophase and scotophase. The nuclear volume of the pinealocytes, calcul

Transition from dim to bright light in the morning induces an immediate elevation of cortisol levels.

The only well documented effect of light exposure on endocrine function is the suppression of nocturnal melatonin. Bright light exposure has behavioral effects, including the alleviation of sleepiness during nocturnal sleep deprivation. The present study examines the effects of bright light on the profiles of hormones known to be affected by sleep deprivation (TSH) or involved in behavioral activation (cortisol). Eight healthy men participated each in three studies involving 36 h of continuous wakefulness. In one study, the subjects were exposed to constant dim light (baseline). In the two oth

Breeding conditions induce rapid and sequential growth in adult avian song control circuits: a model of seasonal plasticity in the brain.

In adult songbirds, seasonal changes in photoperiod and circulating testosterone (T) stimulate structural changes within the neural song control circuitry. The mechanisms that control this natural plasticity are poorly understood. To determine how quickly and in what sequence the song nuclei respond to changing daylength and circulating T, we captured 18 adult male white-crowned sparrows and kept them on short days for 12 weeks. We killed five of these birds and exposed the rest to long days (LD) and elevated T. We killed these birds either 7 or 20 d after LD + T exposure. We measured song nuc…

The circadian timing system and reproduction in mammals.

Circadian systems in a wide variety of organisms all appear to include three basic components: 1) biological oscillators that maintain a sel … nter a potential mate. 2) Many mammals exhibit seasonal reproductive rhythms that are largely under photoperiod regulation; in these species, the circadian system and the pineal gland are crucial components of the mechanism that is used to measure day length. The effects of environmental temperature, hypoxia, and hypercapnia on the breathing pattern of saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus).

This study aimed to describe the effects of change in environmental temperature, hypoxia, and hypercapnia on the breathing pattern of Crocodylus porosus. Increased environmental temperature, hypoxia, and hypercapnia each caused an increase in minute ventilation and changes in breathing pattern. Breathing frequency increased and the duration of the nonventilatory period decreased in response to all three conditions. Under hypercapnia tidal volume also increased, with no change in rate of inspiration. The number of breaths per breathing burst decreased with increased temperature but remained una

Effects of pinealectomy and melatonin on the timing of the proestrous luteinizing hormone surge in the rat.

Effects of pinealectomy and melatonin replacement on the timing of the preovulatory luteinizing hormone (LH) surge were examined in female rats housed under a light-dark cycle (lights on 06:30-18:30 h). Animals were pinealectomized or sham-operated 21-28 days before bleeding. They were sequentially bled in the afternoon of proestrus through the indwelling cardiac cannula without anesthesia. Proestrous LH surges were observed in all pinealectomized rats, but the onset times of the LH surge in these animals showed a significantly greater variance than those in sham-operated controls.
