Physiology and Practicality of Left Ventricular Septal Pacing.

Left ventricular septal pacing (LVSP) and left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) have been introduced to maintain or correct interventricular and intraventricular (dys)synchrony. LVSP is hypothesised to produce a fairly physiological sequence of activation, since in the left ventricle (LV) the working myocardium is activated first at the LV endocardium in the low septal and anterior free-wall regions. Animal studies as well as patient studies have demonstrated that LV function is maintained during LVSP at levels comparable to sinus rhythm with normal conduction. Left ventricular activation is more s

Immunohistochemical estrogen receptor assessment in hyperplastic, neoplastic, and physiologic endometria.

Endometrial hyperplasias and some endometrial carcinomas arise in a setting of estrogen excess. Steroid hormones interact with cells via specific receptors; assessing receptor levels may indicate a tissue's potential for interaction with that hormone. To examine estrogen receptor (ER) levels in endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial carcinoma, and physiologically cycling endometrium, an immunohistochemical technique utilizing a monoclonal anti-estrophilin (estrogen receptor) antibody was applied to formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. In complex hyperplasia and grade I adenocarcinoma, the m

Region-specific high-frequency oscillations under propofol anesthesia: comparison of epileptogenic and functional cortex.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the rates of pathological and physiological high-frequency oscillations (HFOs; 80-200 Hz) differ between non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) and propofol anesthesia (PA). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 11 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent chronic intracranial EEG monitoring and intraoperative EEG recording under PA. Among 761implanted electrodes, 29 sites were classified as epileptogenic cortex (EC), defined as seizure onset sites whose resection resulted in postoperative seizure freedom. Fifty-eight sites were classified as functional c

Physiologic hydronephrosis as a cause of emergent right abdominal pain in pregnancy-truth or myth?

BACKGROUND: Physiologic hydronephrosis in pregnancy is usually asymptomatic, however, definitions of symptomatic hydronephrosis vary, pain being the only criterion in some cases. We found no literature validating physiologic hydronephrosis as a cause of emergent right abdominal pain. We aimed to evaluate whether the incidence of hydronephrosis is higher in patients with right abdominal pain and no other identifiable cause, as compared to asymptomatic pregnant women (APW). METHODS: A retrospective review of abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed for acute abdominal pain (AAP)

Computational virtual evaluation of the effect of annuloplasty ring shape.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a result of mitral valve (MV) pathology. Its etiology can be categorized as degenerative or functional MR. Ring annuloplasty aims to reconfigure a dilated mitral annulus to its normal size and shape. We investigated the effect of annuloplasty ring shape on MR outcome using our established 3-dimensional (3-D) echocardiography-based computational MV evaluation protocols. Virtual patient MV models were created from 3-D transesophageal echocardiographic data in patients with MR because of mitral annular dilation. Two distinct annuloplasty rings (Physio II and GeoForm)

The brown seaweed Sargassum cymosum: changes in metabolism and cellular organization after long-term exposure to cadmium.

Sargassum cymosum was exposed to cadmium (Cd) to determine any physiological and ultrastructural effects. To accomplish this, S. cymosum samples were cultivated under photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) and Cd (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 mg L-1) during 7 and 14 days in laboratory-controlled conditions (0 mg L-1 Cd at both exposure times as control). Seaweeds had high retention capacity (over 90 %) for both exposure times. Growth rates showed significant increases by 14 days, especially for 0.1 and 0.4 mg L-1 Cd. Photosynthetic parameters were unaffected by Cd treatments. Chlorophyll contents w

Skin physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling: current research progress, software comparison, and future perspectives.

Transdermal and topical delivery systems (TDS) have emerged as the third-largest route of administration due to their ability to bypass first-pass metabolism and maintain stable plasma concentrations. Skin physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models mechanistically characterize the percutaneous absorption process, predict local and systemic exposure, and enhance research and development efficiency through virtual clinical trials. This paper first elaborates on the theoretical foundation of skin PBPK modeling based on Fick's second law of diffusion and compares the model assumptions and

Radar HRV Monitoring With Physiological Prior Inspired Deep Neural Networks.

Radar sensing has emerged as a promising solution for the contactless monitoring of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a crucial indicator of the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. However, due to signal noise and interference that easily obscure heartbeat details, along with variations in heartbeat across different physiological conditions, existing methods remain restricted to laboratory settings with healthy subjects and fail in real-world scenarios involving more complex physiological conditions. In this study, we propose a physiological prior-inspired deep learning framework for rob

Changes in physiological signal entropy in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: a systematic review.

Background and Objective.Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) affects an estimated 936 million people worldwide, yet only 15% receive a definitive diagnosis. Diagnosis of OSA poses challenges due to the dynamic nature of physiological signals such as oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate variability (HRV). Linear analysis methods may not fully capture the irregularities present in these signals. The application of entropy of routine physiological signals offers a promising method to better measure variabilities in dynamic biological data. This review aims to explore entropy changes in physiologica

A Novel Personalized Strategy for Hip Joint Flexion Assistance Based on Human Physiological State.

Soft exosuits have emerged as potent assistive tools for walking support and rehabilitation training. However, most existing soft exosuit systems rely on preset assistance modes, which may not accurately align with individual physiological states and movement requirements, leading to variable user experiences and efficacy. While existing human-in-the-loop (HIL) research predominantly focuses on optimizing metabolic cost and torque difference parameters, there is a notable absence of real-time monitoring methods that closely reflect the human body's physiological state and strategies that dynam

Exposure to artificial light at night alters innate immune response in wild great tit nestlings.

The large-scale impact of urbanization on wildlife is rather well documented; however, the mechanisms underlying the effects of urban environments on animal physiology and behaviour are still poorly understood. Here, we focused on one major urban pollutant - artificial light at night (ALAN) - and its effects on the capacity to mount an innate immune response in wild great tit (Parus major) nestlings. Exposure to ALAN alters circadian rhythms of physiological processes, by disrupting the nocturnal production of the hormone melatonin. Nestlings were exposed to a light source emitting 3 lx for se

Prefrontal hemodynamic after-effects caused by rebreathing may predict affective states - A multimodal functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Brain activity has been shown to be influenced by respiratory behavior. Here, we evaluated whether respiration-induced hypo- or hypercapnia may support differentiation between physiological versus pathological respiratory behavior. In particular, we investigated whether systemic physiological measures could predict the brain's time-frequency hemodynamics after three respiratory challenges (i.e., breath-holding, rebreathing, and hyperventilation) compared to resting-state. Prefrontal hemodynamics were assessed in healthy subjects (N = 27) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Sys

Intracranial physiological calcifications in adults on computed tomography in Tabriz, Iran.

Intracranial physiological calcifications are unaccompanied by any evidence of disease and have no demonstrable pathological cause. They are often due to calcium and sometimes iron deposition in the blood vessels of different structures of the brain. Computed tomography (CT) is the most sensitive means of detection of these calcifications. The aim of this study was the assessment of intracranial physiological calcifications in adults. We studied 1569 cases ranging in age from 15 to 85 in Tabriz Imam Khomeini Hospital, Iran. These patients had a history of head trauma and their CT scan did not
