To investigate whether cardiac innervation modulates atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion, we performed acute volume expansion on eight normal and eight matched (age, weight, and total blood volume) transplanted denervated heart patients (Htx), while monitoring fluid-regulating hormone, systemic blood pressure, and echocardiographic atrial area changes. A method for measuring erythrocyte aluminum content was developed. Erythrocyte aluminum levels correlated with plasma aluminum concentrations in normal controls and in patients undergoing dialysis (r = 0.90, p less than 0.001). BACKGROUND: The distribution and elimination of glucose solutions can be analysed by means of a volume kinetic model, but the ability of the model to predict plasma dilution ('model linearity') has not been evaluated.
METHODS: Six male volunteers received four separate infusions of glucose 2.5%: 10 ml kg(-1) and 15 ml kg(-1) over 30 min, and 15 ml kg(-1) and 25 ml kg(-1 )over 60 min. The kinetic model was fitted to measurements of plasma glucose concentration and haemodilution.

In apneic premature infants treated with theophylline or caffeine the pharmacokinetics of the methylxanthines were investigated. Orally applied caffeine and theophylline were rapidly absorbed reaching peak plasma levels at 1-2 and 1-4 h resp. The plasma concentration of free theophylline was significantly higher (p less than 0.001) in prematures than in adults.
