Pain and health-related quality of life in a geographically defined population of men with prostate cancer.

In order to provide baseline data on pain and health-related quality of life, to explore factors predicting pain and reduced quality of life, and to find potentially undertreated cases in men with prostate cancer, we undertook a population-based questionnaire study. The questionnaire, which included the EuroQo1 instrument, the Brief Pain Inventory form and 8 specially designed questions, was sent to all men with prostate cancer in the county of Ostergötland, Sweden. Of the 1442 men included in the study, 1243 responded to the questionnaire. Altogether 42% had perceived pain during the previous

Use of antacids in a general population: the impact of health-related variables, lifestyle and sociodemographic characteristics.

Self-medication with antacids is very common in patients with less severe forms of dyspepsia, but we know very little about the users of antacids and their incentive to take them. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between self-reported use of antacids and health-related variables, lifestyle, and sociodemographic characteristics in order to characterize the use of antacids in a general population. The use of antacids was assessed by a questionnaire answered by men and women aged 20-62 years (n = 15,986; response rate 75.9%). Logistic regression analysis was used to quantify

[Oral and dental health of a population of school children from the Zou region of Benin (1998)].

Dental caries is becoming increasingly common in developing countries but very few attempts have been made to assess its prevalence accurately. We therefore carried out an epidemiological survey in 1998 in the south of Benin, to estimate the prevalence of dental caries in 300 school children, both boys and girls, aged 12 to 14 years. Each child underwent a dental examination and interview and the data obtained were recorded in a personal clinical record. We determined DMF index for various subgroups of children. We then analyzed DMF index and its correlation with sex, age, socioeconomic level,

An evaluation of the health hazard appraisal based on survey data from a randomly selected population.

A modified version of the Health Hazard Appraisal (HHA) was completed by 268 respondents. From the survey results, it was estimated that by reducing various health risk factors, the respondents could lower their current probability of dying within 10 years by an average of 22 percent. The major predictor of the percentage of reducible ri

Recent results of health examinations on the general population in cadmium-polluted and control areas in Japan.

Health examinations by a revised method aimed at detecting renal tubular dysfunctions more effectively were conducted on the general population aged 50 years and over in cadmium-polluted areas (1826 persons) and control areas (1611 persons) in four prefectures in Japan in 1976. Although detailed analysis of the data is not yet completed, some of the results obtained are described here. The prevalence of glucosuria and low molecular weight proteinuria, frequency of decreased % TRP, and cadmium concentrations in urine are higher in the cadmium-polluted areas than in the controls. Clinically diag

A Health Navigator intervention to identify and respond to the health-related social needs of an Australian population living with cancer: a mixed-methods feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: People living with cancer often require intensive support throughout their cancer journey. While cancer coordination services provide support accessing cancer care and understanding treatment options, many patients experience considerable health-related social needs (e.g. unemployment, financial insecurity) that impact their health and wellbeing. Health Navigator interventions address patients' health-related social needs through ongoing support to access relevant support organisations in the community. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a Health Navigator int

Health Beyond Disease: An Integrated Assessment of Quality of Life, Perceived Health, and Lifestyle Behaviours in a Peri-Urban Kenyan Population-A Pilot Study.

Background/Objective: Health is a multidimensional construct shaped not only by clinical conditions but also by psychological, social, environmental and cultural factors. In low- and middle-income countries undergoing rapid epidemiological transition, understanding health requires integrated and culturally informed approaches. However, quality of life, perceived health status and lifestyle behaviors are often investigated separately, limiting the interpretation of well-being in specific local contexts. This study aimed to provide an integrated assessment of quality of life, perceived health st

Association between oral health-related quality of life and structural determinants of health among elderly populations. a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases disproportionately affect poorer and disadvantaged groups of society. Despite this, there is scarce evidence regarding the monitoring of the structural determinants of health and their impact on oral health status. Thus, this systematic review addresses the question: Is oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of elderly persons (aged ≥ 60 years) associated with structural determinants of health? METHODS: The present systematic review of observational studies applied the following inclusion and exclusion criteria; inclusion criteria: participants living in the co

Rapid review: Identification of digital health interventions in atherosclerotic-related cardiovascular disease populations to address racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health disparities.

Disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and associated health and healthcare delivery outcomes have been partially attributed to differential risk factors, and to prevention and treatment inequities within racial and ethnic (including language) minority groups and low socioeconomic status (SES) populations in urban and rural settings. Digital health interventions (DHIs) show promise in promoting equitable access to high-quality care, optimal utilization, and improved outcomes; however, their potential role and impact has not been fully explored. The role of DHIs to mitigate drivers of the

Health and ageing in Nairobi's informal settlements-evidence from the International Network for the Demographic Evaluation of Populations and Their Health (INDEPTH): a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Much of the focus on population ageing has been in high-income counties. Relatively less attention is given to the world's poorest region, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where children and adolescents still comprise a high proportion of the population. Yet the number of adults aged 60-plus in SSA is already twice that in northern Europe. In addition, SSA is experiencing massive rural to urban migration with consequent expansion of informal urban settlements, or slums, whose health problems are usually unrecognised and not addressed. This study aims to improve understanding of functional

[KAP' (Knowledge Attitude Practices) survey of the population and health professionals regarding oral health and noma in 2012 in the Sahel region, Burkina Faso].

INTRODUCTION: Noma is a significant public health concern in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. To combat this issue, stakeholders have come together to develop a project based on the actual knowledge of local populations and medical professionals about the disease. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This descriptive study examines knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to noma and oral health in the Sahel region in 2012. RESULTS: Although the population is unfamiliar with the term "noma", they generally know the symptoms. However, knowledge of the causes of poor oral health is more confused. While t

Bridging the Gap: Health Education Needs Among Rural Populations with Chronic Illness and Low Health Literacy in Unincorporated Communities in Southern California.

Rural and unincorporated communities (UCs) experience persistent health disparities driven by limited healthcare infrastructure, geographic isolation, and socioeconomic inequities. Health literacy (HL), the ability to obtain, understand, and use health information, is a critical yet underexplored determinant of health outcomes in these settings. This study examined HL and barriers to healthcare and health information access among low-income adults living with chronic conditions in nine rural UCs in Southern California. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was administered in English or Spanish

The Impact of a Gamified Mobile Mental Health App (eQuoo) on Resilience and Mental Health in a Student Population: Large-Scale Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: With many digital mental health interventions failing to engage clients for enough time to demonstrate substantive changes to their well-being and with only 2% of all digital solutions on app stores having undergone randomized controlled trials, the rising demand for mental health prevention and early intervention care is not being met. Young adults in particular struggle to find digital well-being apps that suit their needs. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the effects of eQuoo, an evidence-based mental health game that teaches psychological skills through gamification, on resilien
