Monogenic disorders of hypertension are a distinct group of diseases causing dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and are characterized by low plasma renin activity. These can chiefly be classified as causing (i) excessive aldosterone synthesis (familial hyperaldosteronism), (ii) dysregulated adrenal steroid metabolism and action (apparent mineralocorticoid excess, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, activating mineralocorticoid receptor mutation, primary glucocorticoid resistance), and (iii) hyperactivity of sodium and chloride transporters in the distal tubule (Liddle syndro

Twenty goats which served as the experimental group were administered ascorbic acid (AA) per os at a dosage rate of 100 mg/kg body mass, while 20 others served as controls and were given 10 ml each of sterile water. Forty minutes after the administration and loading, the goats were transported for 12 h. Handling and loading of the experimental and control groups of goats decreased (P < 0.05) the potassium and sodium serum concentrations. The concentration of serum chloride, sodium and calcium increased significantly (P < 0.05) immediately post-transportation, while potassium and magnesium decr

1. Plasma potassium and chloride concentrations were raised and plasma renin activity, aldosterone, bicarbonate and arterial pH were reduced in two brothers with the syndrome of hypertension and hyperkalaemia with normal glomerular filtration rate (Gordon's syndrome), on unrestricted or moderately restricted sodium diets. 2. These abnormalities were corrected in both patients within 10 days of severe sodium restriction. 3. Pressor sensitivity to cold and angiotensin II decreased on low sodium diet, associated with a fall in blood pressure. 4. Increasing distal tubular sodium delivery by infusi

A review of the 127 cases of drug-induced esophagitis reported since 1970 indicates that commonly used medications may be a source of esophageal injury. Retrosternal pain, odynophagia, and dysphagia were the most commonly reported symptoms and most cases were self-limited with 7 to 10 days of symptomatic therapy. Occasionally, severe odynophagia or dysphagia necessitated hospitalization. Emepronium bromide, tetracycline, and its derivatives, potassium chloride, and quinidine accounted for 89% of the reported cases; the remaining 11% were caused by 14 other medications. Serious sequelae, includ…

Soluble trivalent chromium compounds (chromium potassium sulfate, chromium nitrate, chromium chloride, neochromium and chromium alum) were inactive for Salmonella typhimurium TA100, even at milligram amounts per plate. No effect could be detected either in the absence or in the presence of rat-liver, lung or muscle microsomal fractions, of rat-muscle mitochondria (with or without ATP), of oxidized glutathione (GSSG), or of human serum, plasma or erythrocyte lysates. Conversely, addition of a strongly oxidizing agent (potassium permanganate) resulted in toxic effects in plates incorporating mor

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multiorgan disease, caused by autosomal recessive (AR) mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) acting primarily as a chloride channel. CF is most commonly diagnosed in Caucasian populations. Common clinical presentations in pediatric patients include chronic cough, respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, digestive symptoms, and stunted growth, and malnutrition due to gastrointestinal malabsorption and pancreatic insufficiency. Excessive sweat sodium chloride losses due to dysfunctional sweat glands in CFTR result in volume contraction a

Dysfunctions in GABAergic inhibitory neural transmission occur in neuronal injuries and neurological disorders. The potassium-chloride cotransporter 2 (KCC2, SLC12A5) is a key modulator of inhibitory GABAergic inputs in healthy adult neurons, as its chloride (Cl-) extruding activity underlies the hyperpolarizing reversal potential for GABAA receptor Cl- currents (EGABA). Manipulation of KCC2 levels or activity improve symptoms associated with epilepsy and neuropathy. Recent works have now indicated that pharmacological enhancement of KCC2 function could reactivate dormant relay circuits in an

The aim of this work was to investigate the optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL) properties of potassium chloride (KCl) and its potential use in radiation dosimetry. The optimal condition for OSL readout with blue light stimulation were designated using a commercially available Risø TL/OSL reader. KCl was studied in three sample forms: crystals, powder and pellets. The following OSL characteristics were determined: signal reproducibility, OSL measurement-induced sensitivity changes, temperature dependence of OSL and signal stability over time. The results show a high reproducibility of KCl …

In mature neurons, low intracellular chloride level required for inhibition is maintained by the potassium-chloride cotransporter, KCC2. Impairment of Cl- extrusion after KCC2 dysfunction has been involved in many central nervous system disorders, such as seizures, neuropathic pain, or spasticity, after a spinal cord injury (SCI). This makes KCC2 an appealing drug target for restoring Cl- homeostasis and inhibition in pathological conditions. In the present study, we screen the Prestwick Chemical Library® and identify conventional antipsychotics phenothiazine derivatives as enhancers of KCC2 a

An African-American girl presented … channel gene (CLCNKB) typical of autosomal recessive childhood Bartter syndrome. Chronic sodium and potassium chloride replacement therapy together with indomethacin normalized her metabolic status, and she experienced catch-up growth. Proteinuria persisted, however. This is the first documentation of C1q nephropathy, in mild form, complicating autosomal recessive B …

Pseudohypoaldosteronism is a rare syndrome occurring during early infancy, which is mainly characterized by salt-depletion crises. Sodium chloride is lost via the kidneys resulting in a reduced sodium level and raised potassium level in the serum, leading to life-threatening disturbances of water and acid-base concentration. The excessive sodium loss seems to be caused by an unresponsiveness of the renal tubules to endogenous and exogenous mineralocorticoids. The colon, salivary and sweat glands, which are also involved in sodium reabsorption, may likewise be affected by the disease. We descri

Crystal violet (hexamethyl-para-rosaniline chloride) interacts with aqueous KI-I2 during the Gram stain via a simple metathetical anion exchange to produce a chemical precipitate. There is an apparent 1:1 stoichiometry between anion (I-) and cation (hexamethyl-para-rosaniline+) during the reaction and, since the small chloride anion is replaced by the bulkier iodide, the complex formed becomes insoluble in water. It is this same precipitate which forms in the cellular substance of bacteria (both gram-positive and gram-negative types) and which initiates the Gram reaction. Potassium trichloro(e

BACKGROUND: Myopathy is a disorder of skeletal muscles and has a rare occurrence in pregnancy. It may present with numbness/weakness. The occurrence of isolated weakness involving all the limbs is alarming to the patient and the diagnosis can be challenging to the Obstetrician. We present a case of hypokalaemic paralysis in pregnancy.
CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old grand multipara presented at 31 weeks gestation with numbness in all limbs for nine days and one-day history of weakness in all limbs. She had a similar episode in her last pregnancy with complete resolution by the end of puerperium. O

Cl- efflux induces depolarization and contraction of smooth muscle cells. This study was undertaken to explore the role of Cl- channels in endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced contraction in rabbit basilar artery. Male New Zealand White rabbits (n = 26), weighing 1.8-2.5 kg, were euthanized by an overdose of pentobarbital. The basilar arteries were removed for isometric tension recording. ET-1 produced a concentration-dependent contraction of the rabbit basilar artery in the normal Cl- Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer (123 mM Cl-). The ET-1-induced contraction was reduced by the following manipulatio

Unlike other forms of primary aldosteronism, recent prospective studies have paradoxically revealed that glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism (GRA) is usually characterized by normal potassium (K+) levels. To evaluate this paradox we studied 10 GRA subjects and 14 healthy controls in two protocols: 1) the renal K+ excretory response to acute oral administration of 50 mmol K+ chloride and to fludrocortisone, 0.2 mg p.o. q12 h x 4 doses; and 2) the aldosterone response to administration of 50 mmol K+ chloride. The K+ excretion rate (KER) in GRA subjects (n = 6) at baseline (45.6 +/- 8.3 micro

The ionic dependencies of the transepithelial and intracellular electrical parameters were measured in the isolated frog cornea. In NaCl Ringer's the intracellular potential difference Vsc measured under short-circuit conditions depolarized by nearly the same amount after either increasing the stromal-side KCl concentration from 2.5 to 25 mM or exposure to 2 mM BaCl2 (K+ channel blocker). With Ba2+ the depolarization of the Vsc by 25 mM K+ was reduced to one-quarter of the control change. If the Cl-permselective apical membrane resistance Ro remained unchanged, the relative basolateral membran

A moderate increase in serum potassium concentrations has been observed in several controlled clinical trials with beta-blockers. This increase cannot be explained by the retention of potassium in the organism, and is probably caused by the redistribution of potassium from intracellular to extracellular compartments. beta-adrenergic mechanisms seem to be concerned in the extrarenal handling of the potassium-load in man, presumably by inducing an increased uptake of potassium in muscular cells and liver cells. These beta-adrenergic mechanisms are probably of the beta 2-type. In theory there are
