Evidence-based culturally informed mental health treatment for Veterans and their family members: A non-VA U.S. telehealth pilot program.

Veterans and Veteran family members experiencing mental health problems face significant barriers when accessing military culturally competent providers trained in evidence-based treatments (EBTs). Telehealth is a low-cost solution that may increase access. Ongoing evaluation is needed to demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of this emerging practice among military members and their families. Accordingly, authors piloted a telehealth clinic in 2018-19 (before the COVID-19 pandemic). Clinicians in a U.S.-based non-Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic offered military culture informed EBT

Current Evidence and Considerations for Psychological Support Interventions for Fathers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

There is a lack of focus on psychological support for fathers in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), both in research and practice, with fathers receiving far less support from NICU providers as compared with mothers. This article aims to discuss the current literature and limitations related to providing psychological support to fathers in the NICU and proposes short- and long-term efforts for improving psychological care for NICU fathers. We conducted a narrative literature review to summarize interventions for supporting fathers in the NICU, including emotional support, educational suppo

Psychological and Physiological Stress and Stressors in Early Childhood Educators: An Observational Pilot Study.

While early childhood educators' mental health is important, it may also affect the well-being and education of their students. Yet, little research has described the stress and stressors of early childhood educators (ECEs), particularly as the pandemic wanes. This pilot study aimed to (1) describe ECEs' psychological and physiological stress and (2) examine the association between ECEs' psychological and physiological stress levels with stressors. A convenience sample of 67 ECEs, serving children 0-5 years old from 13 early educational centers completed surveys on psychological stress (percei

The role of perceived autonomy support and fear of failure: A weekly diary study on work-related rumination.

Grounded in self-determination theory, the present study examined the weekly fluctuations in different forms of work-related rumination depending on perceived autonomy support and fear of failure at the workplace. Work-related rumination has three dimensions, affective rumination (negative emotions or affect), problem-solving pondering (thinking over the actions to handle the problems), and psychological detachment (mentally distancing oneself from work during nonwork time). In total, 111 employees (Mage = 34.88, SD = 10.43) from various occupations were followed over the course of three weeks

Managing uncertainty and responding to difficult emotions: Cancer patients' perspectives on clinician response during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Patients undergoing cancer treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic have experienced stress and uncertainty with respect to disruptions in cancer care and COVID-19 related risks. We examined whether clinicians' responsiveness to patients' uncertainty and difficult emotions were associated with better health and well-being. METHODS: Patients were recruited from cancer support communities and a market research firm. Respondents assessed clinicians communication that addressed uncertainty and difficult emotions. Health status measures included mental and physical health, coping during t

Working Conditions and Wellbeing among Prison Nurses during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Comparison to Community Nurses.

The psychological health and work challenges of nurses working in prisons during the COVID-19 pandemic are understudied. We evaluated the work and wellbeing characteristics of a California prison nurse group, with a comparison to those of a community nurse group. From May to November 2020, an online survey measured psychosocial and organizational work factors, sleep habits, psychological characteristics, COVID-19 impacts, and pre-pandemic recall among 62 prison nurses and 47 community nurses. Prison nurses had significantly longer work hours (54.73 ± 14.52, p < 0.0001), higher pandemic-related

Tinnitus and Neuropsychological Dysfunction in the Elderly: A Systematic Review on Possible Links.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is a common and disabling symptom often associated with hearing loss. While clinical practice frequently shows that a certain degree of psychological discomfort often characterizes tinnitus suffers, it has been recently suggested in adults as a determining factor for cognitive decline affecting attention and memory domains. The aim of our systematic review was to provide evidence for a link between tinnitus, psychological distress, and cognitive dysfunction in older patients and to focus on putative mechanisms of this relationship. METHODS: We performed a systematic rev

Effective provider-patient communication of a rare disease diagnosis: A qualitative study of people diagnosed with schwannomatosis.

OBJECTIVE: To understand diagnostic communication preferences of patients with schwannomatosis, a rare disease. METHODS: Eighteen adults with schwannomatosis from across the United States participated in semi-structured phone interviews about their diagnostic experiences. Interview transcripts were inductively coded using thematic analysis. RESULTS: We identified three elements of effective diagnostic communication: education (particularly about etiology, prognosis, and treatment options); psychological support (to cope with the new diagnosis and any prior diagnostic harms); and efforts to d

What's parenting got to do with it: emotional autonomy and brain and behavioral responses to emotional conflict in children and adolescents.

Healthy parenting may be protective against the development of emotional psychopathology, particularly for children reared in stressful environments. Little is known, however, about the brain and behavioral mechanisms underlying this association, particularly during childhood and adolescence, when emotional disorders frequently emerge. Here, we demonstrate that psychological control, a parenting strategy known to limit socioemotional development in children, is associated with altered brain and behavioral responses to emotional conflict in 27 at-risk (urban, lower income) youth, ages 9-16. In

High-risk behaviours for the fœtus in pregnant women: The medicolegal and judicial aspects.

Pregnancy is a period of psychological change which may lead to difficulties of adaptation and psychological suffering and give rise to high-risk behaviours for the fœtus in pregnant women. These risk behaviours, which are defined by certain authors as a form of "maltreatment" of the fœtus, usually spring from the psychological distress of the pregnant woman but are not recognised as a specific medical disorder. We illustrate the difficulties encountered in the identification of, and the specific intervention in, these situations through the clinical case of a pregnant drugs-dependent patient

Cultivating multiple aspects of attention through mindfulness meditation accounts for psychological well-being through decreased rumination.

In the last few decades, mindfulness meditation has gained prominence as an adjunctive psychotherapeutic technique. In fact, a vast literature of controlled studies has found that mindfulness meditation is related to improved mental health across a variety of disorders. Elucidating the components involved in mindfulness meditation's positive impact on psychological well-being is an important step in more precisely identifying the populations that would most benefit from its therapeutic utilization. Yet, a consensus regarding the particular underlying mechanisms that contribute to these outcome

The Durham experience: promoting dyslexia and dyspraxia friendly schools.

The Durham County Policy Document on Specific Learning Difficulties (dyslexia and dyspraxia) has been developed over a period of years as a countywide response to ensure that children's specific learning difficulties are identified and that schools are equipped to offer a range of appropriate interventions. The content of the policy document is studied in depth along with the training programmes offered by the Learning Support Service and Educational Psychology Service that will support schools in putting the policy into practice. Future developments, including an exciting project on promoting

Factors Affecting Return to Play in Athletes With Foot and Ankle Injuries.

Recovery from injury for athletes is a multifaceted process that requires physiologic healing of the injury and psychological readiness. Although the individual injury will dictate the terms of healing and different injuries require different recoveries, healing or near-healing of the orthopaedic injury is the first step along the path of return to play. Return to play encompasses a range of milestones that often begin with a limited return to the practice field and end with return to full competition in an unlimited manner. Optimizing the psychology of recovery can allow for a more linear rec

Sleep patterns, sluggish cognitive tempo, and daytime sleepiness - a commentary on Fredrick et al. (2022).

Fredrick et al. (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2022) showed in their cross-sectional and observational study that higher Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) traits were associated with more impaired subjective and objective sleep parameters. Importantly, data were gathered from adolescents and their parents, thus, enhancing the validity of the findings. In addition, the observed pattern of associations was unrelated to ADHD traits, age, sex, medication, or pubertal development. In the present commentary, we acknowledge the scientific value and practical and clinical implications of th

Analyzing Male Infertility Through the Lens of Religiosity and Spirituality Among Muslim Men in Pakistan.

Male infertility is recognized as a multidimensional health issue that covers the physiological, psychological, social, and cultural factors. Despite the availability of prior literature on infertility, the role of religion and spirituality in understanding and coping with male infertility has remained unexplored. This gap is particularly pronounced in Muslim societies such as Pakistan, where religious beliefs significantly shape individuals' health experiences and coping strategies. This study explores how religious beliefs and spiritual practices shape the experiences of Muslim men dealing w
