Tapioca starch-yeast protein 3D printing system for dysphagia: Different hydrocolloids regulate viscoelasticity and 3D printing accuracy through molecular interactions.

To develop easy-to-swallow foods for dysphagic individuals, this study prepared yeast protein (YP) and tapioca starch (TS) composite gel, and explored the effects of four hydrocolloids (HCs): flaxseed gum (FG), locust bean gum (LBG), xanthan gum (XG), and sodium alginate (SA) on their viscoelasticity, swallowing and 3D printing performances. All gels satisfied International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) Level 6 criteria. HCs raised 3D printing accuracy from 80.53% to 95.85%, correlating with increased viscoelasticity in the order: FG > XG > LBG > SA. Molecular analysis show

Engineering and Exploring Hydrolytic Degradation in 3D-Printed Liquid Crystalline Elastomers.

Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are being increasingly explored as biomaterials; however, many LCE properties were not designed with biomedical use in mind. Here, we examine LCE hydrolytic degradation, including investigating approaches to accelerate degradation and whether thermal and mechanical properties change with degradation. Among 3D-printable LCE chemistries, we find that networks formed via thiol-Michael addition followed by thiol-ene photo-cross-linking degrade most rapidly. The integration of hydrophilic chain extenders (e.g., PEG) accelerates LCE degradation and demonstrates t

Self-organizing bioceramic granules with wave-dissipating architectures for bone void filling.

Granular bone substitutes readily adapt to irregular defects but lack initial stability, often resulting in granule migration and clinical complications. Inspired by the structural stability of wave-dissipating concrete blocks, which protect breakwaters from wave impact, we fabricated wave-dissipating bioceramic granules using digital light processing-based 3D printing and evaluated their potential for bone repair. Of six wave-dissipating designs, Tetrapod, Dolos, and Hexaleg were demonstrated to self-organize into the architectures featuring optimal intergranular space for bone ingrowth and m

3D-Printed Porous Titanium Cages in Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

Lumbar degenerative disease is one of the most common indications for spinal surgery, and lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) remains a central technique in its management. The performance of an interbody fusion cage largely depends on its material composition and structural design, which influence segmental stability and the quality of bony fusion. This review summarizes the material characteristics, biomechanical rationale, biological behavior, and clinical applications of three-dimensional-printed porous titanium (3D-pTi) interbody cages. Advances in additive manufacturing enable precise control

An in vitro parametric study of maxillary sinus ventilation using transparent 3D-printed sinonasal models.

BACKGROUND: Impaired maxillary sinus ventilation promotes secretion stasis and infection risk. How anatomical parameters (ostial diameter (D), length (L), and sinus volume (V)) interact with breathing pattern to shape ventilation has not been systematically studied in anatomically realistic settings. METHODS: Fifteen transparent sinonasal casts were 3D printed spanning three levels of D, L, and V (D1-D3, L1-L3, V1-V3). E-vapor was used to visualize and quantity sinus ventilation under three conditions: breath-hold, quiet breathing, and panting. Two time metrics were quantified: (i) total vapo

An experimental validation of computational fluid dynamics for airflow in a subject-specific normal human nasal model using a precise 3D-printed replica.

BACKGROUND: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used for studying nasal airflow but is rarely rigorously validated against experimental data. This study aimed to validate a subject-specific CFD model by comparing intranasal air pressure with measurements from a precise physical replica. METHODS: 1:1 scale resin model of a single healthy human nasal cavity was fabricated using high-precision 3D printing (0.1 mm tolerance). Static pressures at 63 checkpoints within the nasal cavity were measured under three steady-state flow rates (180, 560, and 1100 mL s-1) corresponding to different

Development of a Stereolithography 3D Printing-Based Micropatterning Method to Study Endothelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition Mechanobiology.

Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) is the process of endothelial cells undergoing molecular changes that shift their phenotype from that of endothelial cells to that of mesenchymal-like cells. It is a crucial developmental process that has been implicated in various physiological and pathological conditions. EndMT has gained attention as a potential therapeutic target for cardiovascular disease processes, including atherosclerosis, myocardial fibrosis, and vascular calcification. In addition to the assessment of endothelial and mesenchymal markers, the behavioral mechanics of endoth

A 3D phantom for EIT printed in a single part.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a medical imaging technology that uses electrical current to image the body. Imaging phantoms which act as a well-characterized reference objects are useful for the study of EIT and calibration of EIT devices. A proof of concept of a new type of 3D printed phantom for EIT was recently introduced, and this paper seeks to fully realize this concept by printing a phantom with three-dimensional geometry in a single part and demonstrating how it can be used for the study of EIT. The 3D printed phantoms are printed all-in-one, with internal regions of differi

Application of 3D printing to create an in vitro aneurysm rupture model.

Currently available benchtop (in vitro) aneurysm models are inadequate for testing the efficacy of endovascular device treatments. Specifically, current models do not represent the mechanical instability of giant aneurysms (defined as aneurysms with 25 mm in height or width) and do not predictably rupture under simulated physiological conditions. Hence, in vitro aneurysm models with biomechanically relevant material properties and a predictable rupture timeframe are needed to accurately assess the efficacy of new medical device treatment options. Understanding the material properties of an ane

Multi-Tissue Integrated Tissue-Engineered Trachea Regeneration Based on 3D Printed Bioelastomer Scaffolds.

Functional segmental trachea reconstruction is a critical concern in thoracic surgery, and tissue-engineered trachea (TET) holds promise as a potential solution. However, current TET falls short in fully restoring physiological function due to the lack of the intricate multi-tissue structure found in natural trachea. In this research, a multi-tissue integrated tissue-engineered trachea (MI-TET) is successfully developed by orderly assembling various cells (chondrocytes, fibroblasts and epithelial cells) on 3D-printed PGS bioelastomer scaffolds. The MI-TET closely resembles the complex structur

Mass irradiation of adult Aedes mosquitoes using a coolable 3D printed canister.

In the last decade, the use of the sterile insect technique (SIT) to suppress mosquito vectors have rapidly expanded in many countries facing the complexities of scaling up production and procedures to sustain large-scale operational programs. While many solutions have been proposed to improve mass production, sex separation and field release procedures, relatively little attention has been devoted to effective mass sterilization of mosquitoes. Since irradiation of pupae en masse has proven difficult to standardise with several variables affecting dose response uniformity, the manipulation of
