OBJECTIVE: The effect of long-term mechanical support on subsequent heart transplantation is still debated.
METHODS: We report the outcome of 41 patients (42 +/- 12 years) bridged with left ventricular assist devices (VAD; 28 Novacor, 9 HeartMate, 2 Thoratec, and 2 DeBakey) for >100 days (218 +/- 76 days) between April 1994 and March 2000). We compared follow-up with 146 patients (55 +/- 13 years) who underwent heart transplantation during the same time without prior long-term mechanical support.

There is usually some relapse in position of the alar cartilage after primary repair of unilateral cleft lip. Therefore, preoperative or postoperative external splinting has been recommended to supplement either closed or open suspension of the alar cartilage. The authors present a method using a resorbable internal nostril splint to shield the positioned alar cartilage from deformational forces caused by scar, and thus avoiding the problems associated with external splinting. An internal nasal splint was placed in 15 infants during repair of unilateral complete cleft lip and nasal deformity.

PURPOSE: Despite the introduction of more refined surgical techniques, the optimal treatment of the most severe forms of hypospadias remains to be determined. Single stage procedures, whether with the use of flaps or grafts, have long been regarded as the best approach, although the complication rate is nonnegligible with all procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the use of a 2-stage repair with preputial graft interposition and subsequent tubularization of the urethral plate applied it to all severe cases of hypospadias with significant chordee or small glans.

Educational Kinesiology is a treatment using specific movements to access different parts of the brain in maximizing learning potential. It has been recommended for use with learning disabled children; however, studies validating its effects are limited. A burn injury so severe that inpatient treatment is necessary is a crisis in any patient's life. For patients who also suffer from an alcohol use disorder, hospitalization may offer a unique opportunity to facilitate entry into appropriate treatment. In this study, 442 hospitalized patients with burns were evaluated, and 50 (11%) were diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder by DSM-III-R criteria. Fifty-two patients with unilateral sciatica caused by intervertebral disc herniation were selected on strict clinical and radiological criteria. Ninety-six patients underwent percutaneous radiofrequency coagulation (RC) of the Gasserian ganglion for relief of trigeminal neuralgia between 1973 and 1978. The purpose of the present clinical investigation was to determine the risks associated with mild chronic hypertension in pregnancy. Two hundred eleven consecutive pregnancies complicated by mild chronic hypertension (diastolic blood pressure, 90 to 110 mmHg) were analyzed. All patients were followed closely throughout pregnancy with frequent prenatal visits and serial assessment of fetal status. Ten patients with oral habits such as biting, chewing licking, or pushing of the cheeks, lips, teeth, or palate were randomly assigned to either habit reversal treatment or to negative practice treatment. Treatment was given in a single 2-hr session. The patients receiving negative practice treatment showed a mean reduction of about 65%, those receiving the habit reversal treatment showed a mean reduction of about 99% during the 22-months of follow-up.

Adult kidneys were transplanted into 12 children weighing between 5,400 and 8,800 gm. Ten received parental and two received cadaver grafts. The authors present the results of 10 hypoglosso-facial anastomoses performed according to the technique of J.M. Sterkers and J.M. Pelisse.
