A retrospective, multicenter, Scandinavian study of bone grafting of alveolar processes of severely atrophic jaws in combination with implant insertion was conducted with 150 patients. Five different grafting techniques were assessed: local or full onlay; inlay; combination of onlay/inlay grafts; and LeFort I osteotomies. The majority of the patients were treated using a one-stage approach (n = 125) and all had autogenous bone grafts. A total of 781 Brånemark implants were inserted, of which 624 were placed in bone grafts and alveolar bone. Twenty-five patients (17%) dropped out during the fol

Providing fixed implant-supported prostheses for edentulous patients with microstomia or limited mouth opening is challenging. The clinical treatment of a patient who was a multiple amputee with microstomia and a complete loss of lips elasticity is described. A custom half-sectioned prosthesis was fabricated to resolve numerous difficulties. A screw-retained complete implant-supported prosthesis was developed from a monolithic zirconia framework supported by 4 implants and with digital scanning and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing of the prosthesis. The protocol achieved

In March 2024, the first two Aptis distal radioulnar joint prostheses in France were implanted at the University Hospital of Martinique. In Europe, these types of prostheses have been used since 2008 in Spain and the UK. This article aims to analyse the reasons why the Aptis prosthesis was not used in France, the second-largest economy in Europe, for 20 years after its approval in the European market. In our opinion, there are two major reasons: the first is financial and regulatory, related to the French Social Security system and private insurance; the second is related to the degree of open

Triplex (Terumo Corp, Tokyo, Japan) is a relatively new vascular protheses with a non-biodegradable coating material. We experienced two cases of graft elongation in Triplex grafts post-operatively. In one of the cases, the graft elongation led to occlusion of the left subclavian artery. In the other case, the graft elongation resulted in a pseudoaneurysm of the ascending aorta. A unique feature of Triplex grafts is that they may reduce post-operative inflammation reaction; however, they could also invite a limited adhesion formation with the surrounding tissue, which contribute to prostheses

In a recent publication, reporting the sixth case of aortic angiosarcoma, probably induced by the implantation of a dacron vascular prosthesis, Weiss et al. have done a literature review concerning the association between the presence of vascular prostheses and the onset of mesenchymal neoplasms. Although they consider the incidence of this association very low, they also point out the hypothesis, largely supported by experimental studies, that vascular prostheses can play the role of aetiological co-factor or factor in the onset of these tumors. We consider useful to report a case of malignan

Testicular prostheses are regularly used in urological surgery and are important for postoperative psychological well-being in many patients undergoing orchiectomy. One of the recognised complications of this procedure is graft extrusion, which can result in significant morbidity for patients and require operative reintervention. Whilst most cases of extrusion involve upward graft migration to the external inguinal ring or direct displacement through the scrotal skin, we present an unusual case of complete expulsion of testicular implant three weeks postoperatively through a previously healthy

The loss of the upper extremity implicates a grave insult in the life of the involved person. To compensate for the loss of function different powered prosthetic devices are available. Ever since their first development 70 years ago numerous improvements in terms of size, weight and wearing comfort have been developed, but issues regarding the control of upper extremity prostheses remain. Slow grasping speed, limited grip positions and especially failure to provide a sensory feedback limit the acceptance in patients. Recent developments are aimed to allow a more intuitive control of the prosth

Conventional amputation prostheses rely on the attachment of the socket to the stump, which may lead to soft-tissue complications. Intraosseous transcutaneous amputation prostheses (ITAPs) allow direct loading of the skeleton, but their success is limited by infection resulting from breaching of the skin at the interface with the implant. Keratinocytes provide the skin's primary barrier function, while hemidesmosomes mediate their attachment to natural ITAP analogues. Keratinocytes must attach directly to the surface of the implant. We have assessed the proliferation, morphology and attachment

BACKGROUND: There are a few good options for restoring bone defects in the hand and foot. 3D-printed implants have been used in the pelvis and elsewhere, but to our knowledge, they have not been evaluated in the hand and foot. The functional outcome, complications, and longevity of 3D-printed prostheses in small bones are not well known.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What are the functional outcomes of patients with hand or foot tumors who were treated with tumor resection and reconstruction with a 3D-printed custom prosthesis? (2) What complications are associated with using these prostheses? (3)

STUDY DESIGN: Radiographic evaluation of lumbar total disc replacement (TDR).
OBJECTIVES: To assess radiographically segmental angulation and mobility after lumbar TDR, to determine the rate of posterior component impingement, and to investigate the influence of implantation level and mono- versus bi-segmental implantations.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Polyethylene (PE)-wear can lead to inferior outcome after lumbar TDR due to aseptic loosening. One contributing factor might be increased segmental lordosis with component impingement.
METHODS: Fifty-six consecutive patients with 66 ProDisc-L

Maxillectomy and severely resorbed maxilla are challenging to restore with provision of removable prostheses. Dental implants are essential to restore esthetics and function and subsequently quality of life in such group of patients. Zygomatic implants reduce the complications associated with bone grafting procedures and simplify the rehabilitation of atrophic maxilla and maxillectomy. The purpose of this study was to compare, by means of 3-dimensional finite element analysis, the impact of different zygomatic bone support (10, 15, and 20 mm) on the biomechanics of zygomatic implants. BACKGROUND: While prosthesis-associated malignancies have been acknowledged, awareness among surgeons and patients in the ophthalmologic field remains limited, despite the frequent occurrence of prosthesis-related surgeries. We aim to address this gap through a scoping review of malignancies following ophthalmologic surgeries involving various foreign device/prosthesis/implants.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a review using PubMed and Embase for studies on cancer and ophthalmic prostheses/implants. The final selection of articles for the ophthalmology aspect underwent rigo

PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of fixed, fiber-reinforced resin bridges on 4 ultrashort implants with a sufficient implant survival success rate of at least 90% in highly atrophic jaws.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective temporal cohort study was designed, with the inclusion of 10 patients. Of the 10 patients, 8 had atrophic jaws (7 women, 1 man; mean age at implant placement 58.5 years, range 40.7 to 73.9) and 2 had fibula-mandibular transplants (1 woman, aged 76.5 years; and 1 man, aged 69.3 years). All 10 patients had their dentition restored with 4 ultrashort implants. The impl

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this investigation were to determine a diagnosis and identify the underlying etiology.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old female had experienced a constellation of symptoms stemming from the 1980s, including the following types: neurological, respiratory, gastroenterological, dermatological, skeletal, and ophthalmological. No correlation with an environmental (or other) factor could be found to account for the presence or exacerbation of unexplained signs and symptoms-except that the patient had been exposed to a series of silicone breast implants. Fixed prostheses offer various advantages over conventional removable devices for immediate restoration of a fractured tooth in the esthetic zone. In this case report, a fixed solution is employed through the use of a same-day provisional restoration attached to an immediately placed dental implant. Utilizing biologics and an implant system that allows for excellent primary stability, this treatment modality offers a predictable method for achieving immediate implant placement and provisionalization. The minimally invasive technique facilitates the development and maintenance of soft- and hard

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine whether the width of keratinized mucosa (WKM) is associated with the health status of tissue surrounding dental implants and the contralateral teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients who received implant-fixed unilateral prostheses in the premolar or molar region were recruited for the study. The following parameters were measured for each implant and contralateral tooth: WKM, gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), pus discharge, plaque accumulation (PA), gingival recession (GR), and difficulty of
