The ability to discriminate short temporal intervals was examined in a dyslexic adult (E.C.) and six matched controls. Listeners had to decide whether the second interval was shorter or longer than a standard (target) interval. Each interval was defined as the silent duration between two successive brief tones. Choroideremia is a bilateral and progressive chorioretinal degenerative disease of X-linked inheritance. In Taiwan, the disease has rarely been reported. We recently found 8 male patients and 5 female carriers in two Chinese families with choroideremia and studied the clinical, psychophysical and electrophysiological properties of the disease. Whole nerve action potential (AP) and single auditory-nerve fiber thresholds were measured in chinchillas exposed to noise. The exposure stimulus was a 500-Hz octave band of noise presented at 95 dB SPL for 15 min/h, for 4 or 40 days. The AP thresholds were elevated by about 40 dB on day 4, between 0.5 kHz and approximately 8 kHz.
