Arithmetic disabilities, specific and otherwise: a neuropsychological perspective.

From a neuropsychological perspective, this article summarizes research that addresses some of the developmental interactions of disabilitie … ime and in much the same manner--to specific patterns of impairment in mechanical arithmetic and in psychosocial functioning. The other pattern (Group R-S) is found to lead to particular patterns of academic deficits (including arithmetic), but not to any particular level or type of psychosocial dysfunction. The manifestations of the NLD profile in various types of neurol …

Feasibility and cross-cultural validation of an adapted social skills group training programme (KONTAKTTM CHILD) for Chinese autistic children: a waitlist RCT protocol.

INTRODUCTION: School-age autistic children commonly experience social communication and interaction challenges in their everyday lives. While international evidence suggests that social skills group training (SSGT) programmes can support autistic children, improving their psychosocial functioning, to date there is no standardised evidence-based SSGT tailored towards the needs of autistic children aged 8-12 years living in the Chinese Mainland. Therefore, the primary objective of this study will be to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally adapted 16-session version of the s…

Examining associations, moderators and mediators between childhood maltreatment, social functioning, and social cognition in psychotic disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been related to social functioning and social cognition impairment in people with psychotic disorders (PD); however, evidence across different CM subtypes and social domains remains less clear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify associations between CM, overall and its different subtypes (physical/emotional/sexual abuse, physical/emotional neglect), and domains of social functioning and social cognition in adults with PD. We also examined moderators and mediators of these associations. A PRISMA-compliant systematic search was performe

Autistic and schizotypal traits and global functioning in bipolar I disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the expression of autistic and positive schizotypal traits in a large sample of adults with bipolar I disorder (BD I), and the effect of co-occurring autistic and positive schizotypal traits on global functioning in BD I. METHOD: Autistic and positive schizotypal traits were self-assessed in 797 individuals with BD-I recruited by the Bipolar Disorder Research Network. Differences in global functioning (rated using the Global Assessment Scale) during lifetime worst depressive and manic episodes (GASD and GASM respectively) were calculated in groups with high/low autisti

Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuro-developmental disorder of childhood that is often associated with various psychiatric morbidities. Timely diagnosis and appropriate management can significantly impact psychosocial functioning. Morbidities may be a major source of disability, and may determine ultimate prognosis, although most children will experience significant improvement or resolution of symptoms by adulthood. Additional management considerations must be made in those with TS symptoms persisting into adulthood. The mainstay of therapy remains dopamine receptor blocking drugs, but new thera…

Clinical Observations of Psychiatric and Sexual Outcomes in Patients with Trazodone-Associated Ischemic Priapism.

Background and objectives: Ischemic priapism is a rare but serious adverse effect of trazodone, associated with a high risk of long-term sexual dysfunction. While its urological consequences are well described, psychiatric and psychosocial outcomes remain insufficiently explored. This study assessed psychiatric and sexual sequelae following trazodone-associated ischemic priapism and compared clinical characteristics with trazodone-treated patients without priapism. Materials and Methods: In this single-center observational study, 268 adult patients receiving trazodone were analyzed, including

Quality of life in patients with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC).

BACKGROUND: The quality of life (QoL) of patients with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) has not been studied before. We aimed to investigate the impact of the disease on QoL. We studied the QoL of 91 TSC patients who have attended the Bath TSC clinic, UK over 6 months. QoL was evaluated using the PedsQL for children, and SF-36 for adults. RESULTS: Impaired QoL is found in all patients with TSC regardless of the presence of epilepsy and learning disabilities (LD). Total mean self-reported score for children was 71 out of 100, compared to a UK norm of 84, p < 0.000. The proxy mean score was 48,

Rehabilitation in endocrine patients: a novel psychosomatic approach.

Long-standing endocrine disorders may imply a degree of irreversibility of the pathological process and induce highly individualized affective responses. The psychosocial impairment that is associated with incomplete remission from endocrine illness suggests the need for an innovative approach to treatment, introducing in clinical endocrinology the concept of rehabilitation, which in other fields of medicine is already established. This new proposal stems from a number of unresolved issues related to the high prevalence of psychosocial impairment in patients adequately treated for various endo

How nurses address psychosocial needs in patients with advanced heart or lung failure: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced heart failure or lung failure often experience significant changes in psychosocial needs, which may affect their quality of life, emotional wellbeing, and daily functioning. Although nurses are well-positioned to address these needs, there is limited understanding of their perspective on these conversations. Therefore, this study aimed to explore how nurses approach and experience addressing changes in psychosocial needs of patients with advanced heart failure (NYHA stage III or IV) or lung failure (GOLD 3 or 4). METHODS: A qualitative study consisting of se

Impact of physiotherapy on patients with advanced lung cancer.

Patients with lung cancer have high mortality and high morbidity. Lung cancer-related symptoms and problems such as dyspnea, fatigue, pain, and cachexia that begin in the early phase later result in poor physical functioning, psychosocial, and quality of life status. In addition, advancing age is associated with significant comorbidity. These patients may benefit from multidisciplinary therapy to reduce the perceived severity of dyspnea and fatigue and increase physical functioning and quality of life. Based on management of symptoms and problems such as dyspnea, physical inactivity, cancer-re

Predictors of depressive symptomatology of geriatric patients with lung cancer-a longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a major health problem throughout the world. It is the leading cause of cancer-related death in men and women in the USA, with a 5-year survival rate of only 14%. It has been hypothesized that variables such as physical and social functioning, cancer-related symptomatology, comorbid conditions, cell type, and treatment are valid predictors of the psychological response to a diagnosis of lung cancer. METHODS: As part of a larger longitudinal study, 211 patients, 65 years of age or older, with an incident diagnosis of lung cancer, were recruited from 23 sites within a

The Diagnosis and Management of Bipolar I and II Disorders: Clinical Practice Update.

Bipolar disorders, including bipolar I disorder (BP-I) and bipolar II disorder (BP-II), are common, potentially disabling, and, in some case … d incomplete responses to treatment are common, especially for the depressive phase. Mood symptoms, psychosocial functioning, and suicide risk must, therefore, be continually reevaluated, and, when necessary, the plan of care must be adjusted during long-term treatment. Many patients will require additional treatment of comorbid psychiatric and substance use disorders and …
