INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced sarcoma (RIS) of the head and neck is a late and rare complication of cancer treatment by radiation therapy. It occurs mostly within the limits of the irradiated area. Its incidence is increasing and related to an improved survival rate of treated patients. But it does not rule out the use of radiotherapy in the treatment of this cancer.

In order to establish an efficient training program of radiation safety for nurses, studies have been carried out on the basis of questionnaires. Collaboration of nurses, who are usually standing closest to the patient, is necessary in order to offer safe radiological diagnostics/treatment. Acute radiation dermatitis is a common side-effect of radiotherapy which often necessitates interruption of the therapy. Currently, there is no general consensus about its prevention or about the treatment of choice. The goal of this work was to focus on optimal methods to prevent and manage acute skin reactions related to radiation therapy and to determine if there are specific topical or oral agents for the prevention of this acute skin reaction. The prevention and the early treatment are the two focus points of the management of the acute radiation dermatitis.

The purpose of this article is to provide radiologists with key elements of radiation protection for interventional radiology patients. The following points will be discussed: standards of the fluoroscopy units, dedicated dosimetry, risks (especially cutaneous) and means to reduce them, optimization of interventional radiology dose protocols, and national and international regulations. Appropriateness criteria in interventional radiology are national guidelines that should be implemented.
