Local effects of printed logos and reflective striping fixed to firefighter clothing material packages under low radiation exposure.

Notifications that related 1st degree burns to reflective striping and impermeable clothing elements did reach the investigators, while the mechanisms behind this phenomenon are still unclear. Material tests for thermal and evaporative resistance, and for heat transmission under dry and wet conditions at low radiation levels were done to evaluate the performance of protective clothing with and without printed logos or reflective striping. The results under the specified conditions showed reduction of heat loss capacity under impermeable elements from dry to wet conditions. Reflective surfaces,

Expert consultation is vital for adverse outcome pathway development: a case example of cardiovascular effects of ionizing radiation.

BACKGROUND: The circulatory system distributes nutrients, signaling molecules, and immune cells to vital organs and soft tissues. Epidemiological, animal, and in vitro cellular mechanistic studies have highlighted that exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) can induce molecular changes in cellular and subcellular milieus leading to long-term health impacts, particularly on the circulatory system. Although the mechanisms for the pathologies are not fully elucidated, endothelial dysfunction is proven to be a critical event via radiation-induced oxidative stress mediators. To delineate connectivitie

A systems biology analysis of reproductive toxicity effects induced by multigenerational exposure to ionizing radiation in C. elegans.

Understanding the effects of chronic exposure to pollutants over generations is of primary importance for the protection of humans and the environment; however, to date, knowledge on the molecular mechanisms underlying multigenerational adverse effects is scarce. We employed a systems biology approach to analyze effects of chronic exposure to gamma radiation at molecular, tissue and individual levels in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Our data show a decrease of 23% in the number of offspring on the first generation F0 and more than 40% in subsequent generations F1, F2 and F3. To unveil t

Cardiac and Renal Delayed Effects of Acute Radiation Exposure: Organ Differences in Vasculopathy, Inflammation, Senescence and Oxidative Balance.

We have previously shown significant pathology in the heart and kidney of murine hematopoietic-acute radiation syndrome (H-ARS) survivors of 8.7-9.0 Gy total-body irradiation (TBI). The goal of this study was to determine temporal relationships in the development of vasculopathy and the progression of renal and cardiovascular delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) at TBI doses less than 9 Gy and to elucidate the potential roles of senescence, inflammation and oxidative stress. Our results show significant loss of endothelial cells in coronary arteries by 4 months post-TBI (8.53 or

Radiation-related Adverse Effects of CT-guided Implantation of 125I Seeds for Thoracic Recurrent and/or Metastatic Malignancy.

During radioactive Iodine-125 seed implantation (RISI), Iodine-125 radionuclide is implanted directly into a lesion and kills tumor cells by steadily emitting radiation. In our study, we analyzed the adverse effects of RISI for thoracic malignancy, and investigated the safety, dosage, and adverse effects of RISI for these cases. Between June 2007 and January 2018, 77 patients with thoracic recurrent and/or metastatic tumors who underwent CT-guided RISI were enrolled. Radiation-related adverse effects were analyzed, including pneumonia, esophagitis, hemorrhage, fistula, skin injury, heart injur

Maxillary sinus mucoceles and other side effects of external-beam radiation in the pediatric patient: A cautionary tale.

A sinonasal mucocele can develop after the obstruction of a sinus ostium, which can occur secondary to trauma, infection, a neoplasm, or an iatrogenic cause. These mucoceles typically arise in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Sinonasal mucoceles are epithelium-lined cysts that can gradually expand to fill a paranasal sinus. They can present with ophthalmologic, rhinologic, and neurologic symptoms. There are reports in the literature of sinonasal mucocele development after radiation for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, these cases are rare; when they do occur, they tend to arise in the spheno

Relations between conspecific density and effects of ultraviolet-b radiation on tadpole size in the striped marsh frog.

Global increases in ultraviolet-B radiation (UVBR) associated with stratospheric ozone depletion are potentially contributing to the decline of numerous amphibian species around the world. Exposure to UVBR alone reduces survival and induces a range of sublethal effects in embryonic and larval amphibians. When additional environmental stressors are present, UVBR can have compounding negative effects. Thus, examination of the effects of UVBR in the absence of other stressors may substantially underestimate its potential to affect amphibians in natural habitats. We examined the independent and in

Combined effects of cadmium and ultraviolet radiation on mortality and mineral content in common frog (Rana temporaria) larvae.

The combined effects of UV with Cd(2 +) exposure on the mortality and mineral content of common frog larvae was investigated. Tadpoles were raised in increasing concentrations of Cd(2 +) (0-2000 microg x L(-1)). Additionally the larvae were exposed to biologically effective doses of UV-A (0.24 kJ x m(- 2)) and UV-B (2.71 kJ x m(- 2)). Parallel groups were grown in the same ionic concentrations in the absence of UV. In the second experiment larvae were exposed to sublethal doses of Cd(2 +) (1000 microg x L(-1)) for 3 days. Then the larvae were submitted to 4 weeks of recovery in clean water. Cd

Effects of folic acid deficiency and MTHFR C677T polymorphism on spontaneous and radiation-induced micronuclei in human lymphocytes.

Folic acid plays a key role in the maintenance of genomic stability, providing methyl groups for the conversion of uracil to thymine and for DNA methylation. Besides dietary habits, folic acid metabolism is influenced by genetic polymorphism. The C677T polymorphism of the methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene is associated with a reduction of catalytic activity and is suggested to modify cancer risk differently depending on folate status. In this work the effect of folic acid deficiency on genome stability and radiosensitivity has been investigated in cultured lymphocytes of 12 sub

Long-term effects of radiation therapy on cognitive and endocrine function in children with leukemia and brain tumors.

BACKGROUND: As the number of long-term survivors of childhood cancer has grown, it has become increasingly clear that central nervous system therapy may have serious long-term effects on cognition and endocrine function. These complications have been studied most extensively in children with brain tumors and leukemia. REVIEW SUMMARY: Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia previously treated with cranial irradiation are at risk for cognitive decline. Chemotherapy-only regimens, which rely on high-dose frequently administered methotrexate, are also associated with producing cognitive dysfun

Modeling radiation dose and effects from internal emitters in nuclear medicine: from the whole body to individual cells.

In nuclear medicine, proper application of radiation protection principles depends on balancing the potential risks of exposure to ionizing radiation against its possible benefits. Average doses to organs, in diagnostic or therapeutic applications, are not always representative of the doses received at the tissue or cellular level. Therefore, understanding of the relationship between the overall biological effect and absorbed dose delivered by the radiopharmaceutical may require study of doses at the organ, tissue, or cell level. In this paper, we review current models for radiation dose asses
