The radiation-induced fibrosis is a late sequela of both therapeutic and accidental irradiations, and has been described in several tissues such as skin and underlying sub-cutaneous tissues, and lung. Based on the newest findings arising from cellular and molecular radiobiology, this review synthesis different aspects of the human superficial radiation-induced fibrosis: clinical and paraclinical observations, radiobiological aspects, gross histological changes, cellular and molecular regulations, and medical management. However, the underlying mechanisms of the superficial radiation-induced fi

The early reactions of the eye to radiation are conjunctivitis and, with higher doses, corneal damage. The inflammatory reactions are transient and remit within a few weeks after the end of radiotherapy. Doses above 60 Gy can produce corneal ulcerations with the risk of perforation and loss of the eye. The most frequent late reaction of the eye is cataract of the lens. The tolerance dose (about 5 Gy) is extremely low and the latent period varies from 6 months to 3 years. The lens in children has a much lower tolerance. The increasing potential for optical support and ophthalmic surgery over re

Elbow injuries are commonly seen in accident departments. Patients with possible bony injuries to the elbow were assessed to see if inability to fully extend the elbow was a good indicator of bony injury and hence the need for X-ray. The sensitivity of this test was 90.7% (95% confidence limits 80.7-100.7) and the specificity 69.5% (95% confidence limits 60.3-78.7). Use of this simple test would reduce both radiography costs and unnecessary exposure to radiation.

Radiation exposure poses a substantial occupational risk for healthcare professionals in the catheterization laboratory (cath lab). The escalating complexity and frequency of interventional procedures, such as cardiac catheterizations and percutaneous coronary interventions, underscore the need for innovative strategies to mitigate radiation exposure. While traditional measures like lead aprons, thyroid collars, and goggles have been pivotal in reducing radiation exposure, they have limitations, especially during prolonged and intricate procedures. Consequently, there is a growing demand for a

A brief review is given of the production and analysis of chromosome aberrations induced by ionizing radiation. The various tissues in which it is possible to demonstrate aberrations are noted and particular emphasis is laid on the culture of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Some examples of recent applications of the technique are described. These are in the determination of suspected overdoses to radiation workers, in estimating doses to radiotherapy patients, and investigating the depth/biological profile for a negative π meson beam.

Efficacy of radiation therapy is compromised by hematopoietic and immune impairments, with elusive underlying causes. This study aimed to elucidate Usp11's role in radiation-induced injuries and uncover related mechanisms. Utilized ARS mouse model to observe survival rates of Usp11-/- (KO) mice post-TBI (Total Body Irradiation). Assessed lymphocyte and MZ B (Marginal Zone B) cell rates using histological analysis, single-cell sequencing, immunofluorescence (IF), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and flow cytometry (FCM). Conducted Co-IP and ubiquitination experiments for mechanism elucidation. Quant

Extramedullary meningeal hematopoiesis (EMH) represents an uncommon finding after stem-cell transplantation. We describe the case of an allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) recipient who developed EMH 1 month after radiation myelitis had been diagnosed. A 39-year-old man with multiple myeloma underwent matched unrelated BMT following a myeloablative conditioning regimen of cyclophosphamide and total-body irradiation (200 cGyx6). This was followed by delivery of 40 Gy of involved-field radiation to an extramedullary plasmacytoma compressing the spinal cord. Although transplantation went

Revista portuguesa de cardiologia : orgao oficial da Sociedade Portuguesa de Cardiologia = Portuguese journal of cardiology : an official journal of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology2023eng
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Concerns surrounding the consequences of ionizing radiation (IR) have increased in interventional cardiology (IC). Despite this, the ever-growing complexity of diseases as well as procedures can lead to greater exposure to radiation. The aim of this survey, led by Portuguese Association of Interventional Cardiology (APIC), was to evaluate the level of awareness and current practices on IR protection among its members.
METHODS: An online survey was emailed to all APIC members, between August and November 2021. The questionnaire consisted of 50 questions focusing on

National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements Commentary 27 examines recent epidemiologic data primarily from low-dose or low dose-rate studies of low linear-energy-transfer radiation and cancer to assess whether they support the linear no-threshold model as used in radiation protection. The commentary provides a critical review of low-dose or low dose-rate studies, most published within the last 10 y, that are applicable to current occupational, environmental, and medical radiation exposures. The strengths and weaknesses of the epidemiologic methods, dosimetry assessments, and sta

Predicting radiation damage to specific organs is becoming ever more challenging with the use of intensity-modulated beams, nonuniform dose distributions, partial organ irradiation, and interpatient and even intraorgan variations in radiation sensitivity. Data-based physical models can be of use in summarizing complicated dose-volume data to help describe clinical outcomes and ultimately aid in the prediction of clinical toxicity. This article attempts to provide a brief overview of the use of normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models and other simple dose/volume metrics to describe

BACKGROUND: Computed tomographic (CT) head scanning of blunt trauma patients is expensive, delays care, and necessitates radiation exposure, while detecting intracranial injuries in a minority of patients. Clinical characteristics may be able reliably identify patients who do not have intracranial injuries and consequently, do no require imaging.
METHODS: Physicians assessed blunt trauma patients undergoing imaging for the presence or absence of specific criteria. Recursive partitioning was used to identify criteria that predict intracranial injuries with high sensitivity.
RESULTS: Intracran

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) is a valuable tool for assessing hip pain due to its wide availability, lack of radiation exposure, and cost-effectiveness. In evaluating sports injuries, dynamic US examination provides substantial benefits in diagnostic clarity and precision. The high prevalence of hip and pelvis injuries among athletes, coupled with the structural complexity and deep position of the hip joint, makes US a practical skill and an indispensable tool in the diagnosis of hip-related injuries. This paper aims to review the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the hip joint and surroun

In nuclear and radiological incidents, overexposure to ionizing radiation is life-threatening. It is evident that radiation depletes blood cells and increases circulating cytokine/chemokine concentrations as well as mortality. While microglia cells of female mice have been observed to be less damaged by radiation than in male mice, it is unclear whether sex affects physio-pathological responses in the bone marrow (BM) and gastrointestinal system (GI). We exposed B6D2F1 male and female mice to 0, 1.5, 3, or 6 Gy with mixed-field radiation containing 67% neutron and 33% gamma at a dose rate of 0
