[On the clinical aspects and ultrastructure of bullous pemphigoid (parapemphigus) of the oral mucous membrane (author's transl)].

Bullous changes in the oral mucosa are often the first signs of a general dermatological disease. Successful diagnosis of such diseases is largely dependent upon the use of complex laboratory methods. Clinical and ultrastructural changes are described and discussed with particular reference to a case of parapemphigus. Atypical intracellular vacuolation and marked acantholysis observed in electron micrographs is interpreted as a secondary phenomenon of direct blistering.

Ki-67 expression as a diagnostic biomarker in odontogenic cysts and tumors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ki-67 is a marker of cell proliferation, used as an important diagnostic marker in the pathologic differentiation of various lesions. It is … , the highest Ki-67 LI was found in odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) (3.58±0.51), and the lowest in the radicular cyst (1.29±0.62%). Ki-67 LIs in all odontogenic cysts were <3%, except for OKC. This controversial lesion seems to have a profile more similar to a tumor, and a treatment plan similar to tumors might be suggested. We found that odontogenic lesions have d …

[Histoenzymological characteristics of epithelial cells in oral mucosal lesions and jaw cysts. Diagnostic significance].

An histoenzymological study (including oxidative enzymes, diaphorases, acid and alkaline phosphatases and naphtolesterases) of 41 biopsy and … and acid phosphatase activities were seen from one cell to another. Among the lesions of the jaws, radicular cysts as well as dentigerous cysts, had low enzymatic activities, similar to those of normal buccal epithelium. The epidermoid cysts (keratocysts), because of their highly differentiated keratinization, like leukoplakia, had the same enzymatic activities …

Recurrent back and leg pain and cyst reformation after surgical resection of spinal synovial cysts: systematic review of reported postoperative outcomes.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: With improvements in neurological imaging, there are increasing reports of symptomatic spinal synovial cysts. Surgical excision has been recognized as the definitive treatment for symptomatic juxtafacet cysts. However, the role for concomitant fusion and the incidence of recurrent back pain and recurrent cyst formation after surgery remain unclear. PURPOSE: To determine the cumulative incidence of postoperative symptomatic relief, recurrent back and leg pain after cyst resection and decompression, and synovial cyst recurrence. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review of the litera

Benign tumors of the spine.

Benign tumors in the spine include osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, osteochondroma, neurofibroma, giant cell tumor of bone, eosinophilic granuloma, and hemangioma. Although some are incidental findings, some cause local pain, radicular symptoms, neurologic compromise, spinal instability, and deformity. The evaluation of spinal tumors includes a thorough history and physical examination, imaging, sometimes laboratory evaluation, and biopsy when indicated. Appropriate treatment may be observational (eg, eosinophilic granuloma) or ablative (eg, osteoid osteoma, neurofibroma,

Radiological Growth Rate of Dentigerous Cysts Associated with Mandibular Third Molars: A Retrospective Panoramic Study.

Background and Objectives: Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic lesions associated with the crowns of impacted teeth and are the second most common odontogenic cyst after radicular cysts. Despite being described as slow-growing, their growth has not been numerically quantified. This study aims to determine the radiological growth rate of dentigerous cysts through quantitative analysis, to clarify their biological behavior, improve clinical management, and guide future research by filling a significant gap in the literature. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, records of 187…

Interleukin 1-like activity in cystic lesions of the jaw.

Odontogenic cyst capsules were cultured in vitro and the culture media analysed for bone-resorption and interleukin 1-like activity. Five cysts synthesised a non-dialysable bone resorbing factor with significant interleukin 1-like activity. One specimen thought to be a cyst with little interleukin 1 activity proved to be antral lining. The results indicate that interleukin 1 may play an important role in cyst expansion by its direct effects on fibroblast proliferation and bone resorption and by stimulating prostaglandin synthesis in stromal fibroblasts of the cyst capsule.

Microdecompression for lumbar synovial cysts: an independent assessment of long term outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Outcomes of surgical intervention for lumbar synovial cysts have been evaluated in the short and intermediate term. Concerns regarding cyst recurrence, the development of late instability at the involved level, and instability/stenosis at adjacent levels (when concomitant) fusion is performed suggest that long term follow-up is needed. This study aims to fill that void. METHODS: Forty-six patients operated by a single surgeon not involved in the study were followed up long term at an average of 9.7 years (range 5 to 22 years) post-operatively. All patients underwent decompression

BACKGROUND: We report the clinical presentation, radiographic studies, intraoperative findings, histopathological analysis, and post-treatment outcome in 26 patients diagnosed with spinal synovial cysts (SSCs). AIMS: To describe the clinical presentation, radiographic studies, operative findings, and postoperative follow-up in 26 patients with SSCs. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: The study was retrospective in design, involving chart review. Individual patient data was tabulated and patterns were recognized. Simple Microsurgical Extirpation as a Method of Choice in Treating Symptomatic Spinal Facet Joint Cysts: A Retrospective Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Facet joint cysts (FJCs) are a cause of radiculopathy, back pain, cauda equina syndrome, and/or claudication. They mostly affect the lumbar spine in the elderly, prevailing in women, and are connected to spinal degeneration and instability. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of open surgical decompression and cyst excision without a subsequent fusion. METHODS: We evaluated neurologic symptoms and potential signs of spinal instability on preoperative versus postoperative radiological examination. We performed a histological assessment of the extirpated cysts. Statistical
