Horizontal eye movement networks in primates as revealed by retrograde transneuronal transfer of rabies virus: differences in monosynaptic input to "slow" and "fast" abducens motoneurons.

The sources of monosynaptic input to "fast" and "slow" abducens motoneurons (MNs) were revealed in primates by retrograde transneuronal tracing with rabies virus after injection either into the distal or central portions of the lateral rectus (LR) muscle, containing, respectively, "en grappe" endplates innervating slow muscle fibers or "en plaque" motor endplates innervating fast fibers. Rabies uptake involved exclusively motor endplates within the injected portion of the muscle. At 2.5 days after injections, remarkable differences of innervation of slow and fast MNs were demonstrated. Premoto

Self-Reported Dizziness Handicap is Related to Functional Capacity in People with Vestibular Hypofunction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals with vestibular hypofunction (VH) report low levels of physical activity (PA), corresponding with restrictions when performing activities of daily living. However, a clear association between physical function and self-reported dizziness handicap and measures of vestibular function has not been established. Our purpose is to investigate whether functional aerobic capacity and PA are related to dizziness handicap and objective assessments of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in participants with VH. METHODS: A total of 36 participants (14 males, 22 females; 70.11

Vestibular Agnosia: Toward a Better Understanding of Its Mechanisms.

Background/Objectives: Vestibular agnosia is characterized by a reduced or absent self-motion perception while demonstrating the presence of normal peripheral vestibular function following stimulation. This condition has previously been reported by previous authors in different populations and more recently in traumatic brain injury patients. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for vestibular agnosia remain a matter of debate. The objective of this manuscript is to review and compare the behavioral and neuroanatomical findings in populations where vestibular agnosia has been demonst

A novel mouse model of acute vestibular dysfunction via semicircular canal injection of absolute ethanol.

OBJECTIVE: Various vestibular pathology models have been developed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of vestibular diseases; however, there is a notable absence of minimally invasive mouse model of vestibular dysfunction. In this study, we established a novel model and conducted a comprehensive evaluation of vestibular function alongside various behavioral assessments. METHODS: We developed a surgical procedure involving canalostomy followed by injection of absolute ethanol into the semicircular canal of mice. Histological analysis and auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing were condu

Sensorineural correlates of failed functional recovery after natural regeneration of vestibular hair cells in adult mice.

Vestibular hair cells (HCs) are mechanoreceptors that sense head motions by modulating the firing rate of vestibular ganglion neurons (VGNs), whose central processes project to vestibular nucleus neurons (VNNs) and cerebellar neurons. We explored vestibular function after HC destruction in adult Pou4f3+/DTR (DTR) mice, in which injections of high-dose (50 ng/g) diphtheria toxin (DT) destroyed most vestibular HCs within 2 weeks. At that time, DTR mice had lost the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVORH), and their VNNs failed to upregulate nuclear cFos expression in response to a vestibular

Which way is down? Visual and tactile verticality perception in expert dancers and non-experts.

Gravity provides an absolute verticality reference for all spatial perception, allowing us to move within and interact effectively with our world. Bayesian inference models explain verticality perception as a combination of online sensory cues with a prior prediction that the head is usually upright. Until now, these Bayesian models have been formulated for judgements of the perceived orientation of visual stimuli. Here, we investigated whether judgements of the verticality of tactile stimuli follow a similar pattern of Bayesian perceptual inference. We also explored whether verticality percep

Gaze position corrective eye movements in normal subjects and in patients with vestibular deficits.

Eye movements in response to high-acceleration head rotations (thrusts) in the horizontal plane from patients with unilateral (UVD) or bilateral vestibular loss (BVD) were recorded. The rapid, gaze-position corrections (GPCs) that appeared when vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) slow phases were undercompensatory were characterized. For comparison, eye movements from normal subjects who were asked to generate saccades in the direction opposite head rotation (in the same direction as slow phases) were recorded. This normal-subject model produced responses with spatial and temporal characteristics si

Upbeat nystagmus from a demyelinating lesion in the caudal pons.

A 51-year-old man developed positional vertigo, ataxia, dysgeusia, diplopia, and oscillopsia. Eye movement examination and video-oculographic recording disclosed primary position upbeat nystagmus (PPUN) and a right internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Brain MRI showed a small focal lesion in the right dorsal tegmentum of the caudal pons with signal characteristics consistent with a primary demyelinating central nervous system disease. PPUN has not been described previously with a lesion in such a location. Clinicoanatomic correlation in this patient suggests that a lesion of the superior vestibular n

Differentiating Superior and Inferior Vestibular Neuritis: Insights from an Integrated VEMP and vHIT Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is a peripheral vestibular disorder commonly associated with viral infections or vascular insults and may affect either the superior or inferior division of the vestibular nerve. Diagnosis is based on case history and clinical vestibular assessments, including cervical (cVEMP) and ocular (oVEMP) vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). The video head impulse test (vHIT) is a recent advancement that enables canal-specific assessment of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), aiding in identifying nerve involvement. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare and

Structural and functional connectivity mapping of the vestibular circuitry from human brainstem to cortex.

Structural and functional interconnections of the bilateral central vestibular network have not yet been completely delineated. This includes both ipsilateral and contralateral pathways and crossing sites on the way from the vestibular nuclei via the thalamic relay stations to multiple "vestibular cortex" areas. This study investigated "vestibular" connectivity in the living human brain in between the vestibular nuclei and the parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) by combined structural and functional connectivity mapping using diffusion tensor imaging and functional connectivity magnetic r

What does the dissociation between the results of video head impulse versus caloric testing reveal about the vestibular dysfunction in Ménière's disease?

CONCLUSION: It is suggested that the different results of rotational (video head impulse - vHIT) and caloric tests in patients with Ménière's disease (MD) may be a consequence of the physical enlargement of the membranous duct in the hydropic labyrinths in MD, causing a reduced response to caloric stimulation. OBJECTIVES: There have been reports that the results of two tests of semicircular canal function, the caloric response and the responses to vHIT do not agree. This retrospective study at a tertiary referral hospital examined this disagreement. METHODS: This study reviewed the data of 2
