Ophthalmic manifestations in Costello syndrome caused by Ras pathway dysregulation during development.

BACKGROUND: Costello syndrome (CS) is a multisystem developmental disorder caused by germline pathogenic variants in HRAS resulting in dysregulation of the Ras pathway. A systematic characterization of ophthalmic manifestations provides a unique opportunity to understand the role of Ras signal transduction in ocular development and guide optimal ophthalmic care in CS individuals. METHODS: Visual function, ocular features and genotype/phenotype correlations were evaluated in CS individuals harboring HRAS pathogenic variants, by cross-sectional and retrospective studies, and were recruited thro

Eye laterality: a comprehensive analysis in refractive surgery candidates.

PURPOSE: To explore eye laterality (higher refractive error in one eye) and its association with refractive state, spherical/astigmatic anisometropia, age and sex in refractive surgery candidates. METHODS: Medical records of 12 493 consecutive refractive surgery candidates were filtered. Refractive error (subjective and cycloplegic) was measured in each subject and correlated with eye laterality. Only subjects with corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of >20/22 in each eye were enrolled to exclude amblyopia. Associations between eye laterality and refractive state were analysed by means of

Enhancing ocular accommodation function and intraocular pressure symmetry through Mingshi Qigong: A pilot case series on visual fatigue recovery.

This preliminary case series explored the effects of a 6-week Mingshi Qigong (MQ) intervention on ocular function in five individuals with visual fatigue and coexisting ocular conditions (cataract or glaucoma). Pre- and postintervention assessments included refractive power, accommodative microfluctuations (AMFs), high-frequency component (HFC), and intraocular pressure (IOP) symmetry. Participants showed refractive changes, some of which may lie within test-retest error margins. Reductions in HFC values reflected enhanced accommodative stability, accompanied by a shift from tension-dominant t

The role of statins in diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetes mellitus is a growing global public health issue estimated to affect around 600 million people by 2040 [1]. It occurs in populations throughout the world, is increasing in both the developing world and high-income countries and also affects young, working-age people. Ocular involvement in diabetes occurs early in the disease and is present in over a third of diabetes mellitus Type 2 patients at the time of diagnosis. Blindness due to diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains a leading cause of adult-onset blindness, [1] which results from disruption of retinal vasculature, ischemia and its co
