BACKGROUND: Breathing, eating, and talking (BET) impairments are common yet frequently underrecognized features of movement disorders. Deficits in respiration, swallowing, voice, and speech may emerge early in the course of a disease, adversely affecting safety, participation, and quality of life. Routine neurological examinations may not adequately capture their impact.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical importance of BET dysfunction across several movement disorders by comparing neurological and speech-language pathology (SLP) approaches to assessment and recommendations for improved e

Mitochondria play a significant role in several cellular activities and their function in health and disease has become an important area of research. Since the brain is a high-energy-demanding organ, it is particularly vulnerable to mitochondrial dysfunction. This has been implicated in several brain disorders including neurodegenerative, psychiatric and neurological disorders, e.g., Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. Significant efforts are underway to develop mitochondria-targeting pharmaceutical interventions. However, the complex mitochondrial membrane network restricts the entry of t

Ethylmalonic encephalopathy protein 1 (ETHE1) and molybdenum cofactor (MoCo) deficiencies are hereditary disorders that affect the catabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. ETHE1 deficiency is caused by mutations in the ETHE1 gene, while MoCo deficiency is due to mutations in one of three genes involved in MoCo biosynthesis (MOCS1, MOCS2 and GPHN). Patients with both disorders exhibit abnormalities of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, among other biochemical findings. However, the pathophysiology of the defects has not been elucidated. To characterize cellular derangements, mitochondrial
