Gestational stress induces persistent depressive-like behavior and structural modifications within the postpartum nucleus accumbens.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common complication following childbirth experienced by one in every five new mothers. Pregnancy stress enhances vulnerability to PPD and has also been shown to increase depressive-like behavior in postpartum rats. Thus, gestational stress may be an important translational risk factor that can be used to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying PPD. Here we examined the effects of gestational stress on depressive-like behavior during the early/mid and late postpartum periods and evaluated whether this was accompanied by altered structural plasticit

MRI predicts efficacy of constraint-induced movement therapy in children with brain injury.

Using resting state (RS) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we identified the predictors of clinical improvement following constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in pediatric patients with chronic hemiplegia. From 14 children with congenital or acquired brain injury and 10 sex- and age-matched healthy controls, brain dual-echo, DTI and RS fMRI sequences were acquired before CIMT. The Quality of Upper Extremities Skills Test and the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) were administered at baseline, at the end of CIMT (10 weeks), and after 6 month

Short-term memory acquisition in female Huntington's disease mice is vulnerable to acute stress.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by cognitive, psychiatric and motor decline, and is modifiable by unidentified environmental factors. We examined the effects of stress on cognitive function in R6/1 HD transgenic mice. Utilizing the Y-maze to assess short-term memory, we report that only female HD mice displayed vulnerability to 1h of confinement stress reflected by impaired memory acquisition. This could not be attributed to a different corticosterone response or exploratory behaviour in the task. This is the first demonstration of increased stress susceptibili

Differential contribution of CBP:CREB binding to corticotropin-releasing hormone expression in the infant and adult hypothalamus.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) contributes crucially to the regulation of central and peripheral responses to stress. Because of the importance of a finely tuned stress system, CRH expression is tightly regulated in an organ- and brain region-specific manner. Thus, in the hypothalamus, CRH is constitutively expressed and this expression is further enhanced by stress; however, the underlying regulatory mechanisms are not fully understood. The regulatory region of the crh gene contains several elements, including the cyclic-AMP response element (CRE), and the role of the CRE interaction w

Motion in the unstable cervical spine when transferring a patient positioned prone to a spine board.

CONTEXT: Two methods have been proposed to transfer an individual in the prone position to a spine board. Researchers do not know which method provides the best immobilization. OBJECTIVE: To determine if motion produced in the unstable cervical spine differs between 2 prone logrolling techniques and to evaluate the effect of equipment on the motion produced during prone logrolling. DESIGN: Crossover study. SETTING: Laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Tests were performed on 5 fresh cadavers (3 men, 2 women; age = 83 ± 8 years, mass = 61.2 ± 14.1 kg). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Three

Oxotremorine treatment restores hippocampal neurogenesis and ameliorates depression-like behaviour in chronically stressed rats.

RATIONALE: Chronic stress results in cognitive impairment, affects hippocampal neurogenesis and is known to precipitate affective disorders such as depression. In addition to stress, neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine (ACh) modulate adult neurogenesis. Earlier, we have shown that oxotremorine, a cholinergic muscarinic agonist, ameliorates stress-induced cognitive impairment and restores cholinergic function. OBJECTIVES: In the current study, we have looked into the possible involvement of adult neurogenesis in cognitive restoration by oxotremorine. Further, we have assessed the effect of

Blockade of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors reverses stress-induced motor impairments.

AIM: Stress and glucocorticoids can influence movement performance and pathologies of the motor system. The classic notion assumes that the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mediates the majority of stress-induced behavioral changes. Nevertheless, recent findings have attributed a more prominent role to the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in modulating behavior. The purpose of this study was to dissociate the impact of MR versus GR activation in movement and stress-associated motor disruption. METHODS: Groups of male and female rats were tested in skilled reaching and open field behavior and treat

Soleus aponeurosis strain distribution following chronic unloading in humans: an in vivo MR phase-contrast study.

The in vivo strain properties of human skeletal muscle-tendon complexes are poorly understood, particularly following chronic periods of reduced load bearing. We studied eight healthy volunteers who underwent 4 wk of unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS) to induce chronic unloading. Before and after the ULLS, maximum isometric ankle plantar flexion torque was determined by using a magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible dynamometry. Volumes of the triceps surae muscles and strain distribution of the soleus aponeurosis and the Achilles tendon at a constant submaximal plantar flexion (20% pre-maxim

Complications of halo fixation in the elderly.

OBJECT: The risk factors of halo fixation in elderly patients have never been analyzed. The authors therefore retrospectively reviewed data obtained in the treatment of such cases. METHODS: A discharge database was searched for patients 70 years of age or older who had undergone placement of a halo device. In a search of cases managed between April 1999 and February 2005, data pertaining to 53 patients (mean age 79.9 years [range 70-97 years]) met these criteria. Forty-one patients were treated for traumatic injuries. Ten patients had deficits ranging from radiculopathy to quadriparesis, and

Paradoxical rate-dependent effect of fluoxetine on captivity-induced stereotypies in bank voles.

Treatment of stereotypies in human and animal clinics is still empirical due to our incomplete understanding of underlying mechanisms. As a consequence, experimental studies in controlled laboratory conditions are necessary. Bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus), housed in barren laboratory cages, often develop stereotyped up-and-down jumping even before the age of 1 month. The aim of this study was to investigate how captivity-induced stereotypies respond to fluoxetine (Prozac), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. During a control period of 10 days saline was administered daily s.c. to 6

Effects of acute stressors on nociception, adrenocortical responses and behavior of dairy cows.

Effects of acute stressors on behavioral, adrenocortical and nociceptive responses were examined in 24 dairy cows kept in tie stalls, using 15 min of social isolation in novel surroundings (ISOL), fixation by the head in the home stall (FIX) and the provision of novel neighbors/stall (NEIGH) as acute stressors as well as a control treatment (CON). Each cow was exposed to one treatment daily in a balanced order. All stressors led to signs of hypoalgesia as indicated by slower (P=0.01) and reduced responses (P<0.10) toward nociceptive laser stimulation after exposure to the acute stressors. ISOL

Suppression of eye movements improves balance.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible interaction of vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal functions. Spontaneous eye movements and anterior-posterior and lateral body sway were recorded simultaneously in 10 patients with vestibular neuritis (Experiment 1) and in 11 healthy subjects (Experiment 2) while all subjects wore a mask that allowed fixation of a head-fixed target. For the healthy subjects, there was no significant difference in postural sway for the conditions of eyes open in darkness and fixation of the head-fixed target. For the patients, the question was whether tra

Radiographic techniques for the pediatric patient.

Obtaining quality radiographs on pediatric patients can be a challenge. Suggestions for communicating with patients about radiation safety and the need for radiographs can facilitate the process. Guidelines for radiographic exposure intervals for young patients are key elements in the reduction of exposure to ionizing radiation and are presented in this paper. The child patient presents unique challenges for the dental professional and special techniques are presented in this article that may be helpful in the conducting radiographic examinations for this patient population.

A prospective study of handcuff neuropathies.

Prior reports of handcuff-related neuropathies have been retrospective or small series of cases selected for their unusual electrophysiological or historical features. We conducted a prospective 27-month study at a large, urban, teaching hospital of all patients with a complaint of hand numbness, weakness, or paresthesias attributed to overtightened handcuffs. Forty-one patients were evaluated clinically, and electrodiagnostic testing was performed on 18. In the group with electrodiagnostic testing, neuropathies due to overtightened handcuffs were detected in 22 superficial radial, 12 median,

Expression of antinociception in response to a signal for shock is blocked after selective downregulation of mu-opioid receptors in the rostral ventromedial medulla.

Prior work has shown that release of endogenous ligands for mu-opioid receptors in the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) is critical for the modulation of spinal nociceptive reflexes observed during stress. In the present study, we used antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (AS ODN) to suppress synthesis of mu-opioid receptors in the RVM prior to activating descending antinociceptive systems with a signal for foot shock. Five groups of rats with RVM cannulae were trained with paired or unpaired exposures to white noise (WN) and foot shock. Over several days, they received RVM infusions of an AS ODN

Prenatal stress alters the size of the rostral anterior commissure in rats.

In rodents and other mammals, prenatal stress disrupts both sexual differentiation and sexual behavior. The present study examined the area of the anterior division of the anterior commissure (the Aca) in coronal, thionin-stained sections of prenatally stressed (P-S), and control male and female rats. Pregnant rats were exposed to thrice-daily heat, light, and restraint stress or left undisturbed during days 15-22 of pregnancy. Adult P-S and control males and females were killed, perfused, and their brains removed. Serial coronal sections (total of approximately 200 microm) through the rostral

Nitric oxide inhibition intensifies cold-restraint induced gastric ulcers in rats.

Treatment 20 min beforehand with an inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis NW-nitro-1-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (12.5, 25, 50 or 100 mg/kg, s.c.), dose-dependently intensified gastric glandular mucosal ulceration produced by cold-restraint stress. Hexamethonium (20 mg/kg) or atropine (1 mg/kg) pretreatment s.c. 20 min before stress strongly antagonised stress-evoked ulceration, as well as the ulcer-potentiating effects of L-NAME when either cholinoceptor antagonist was given concurrently with the NO inhibitor. Stress-induced mast cell degranulation was not worsened by L-NAME pretreatmen
