The effect of host movement on viral transmission dynamics in a vector-borne disease system.

Many vector-borne pathogens whose primary vectors are generalists, such as Ixodid ticks, can infect a wide range of host species and are oft … challenging it with novel field data. The model was only partially successful in predicting Ixodes ricinus density and louping-ill virus prevalence at 6 Scottish sites. We extend the existing multi-host model by forming a two-patch model, incorporating the impact of roaming hosts. This demonstrates that host movement may account for some of the discrepan …

Swiss Army Survey in Switzerland to determine the prevalence of Francisella tularensis, members of the Ehrlichia phagocytophila genogroup, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, and tick-borne encephalitis virus in ticks.

A total of 6071 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected on Swiss Army training grounds in five regions of Switzerland. The aim of the survey was to assess the prevalence of ticks infected with the human pathogens Francisella tularensis, members of the Ehrlichia phagocytophila genogroup, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, and the European tick-borne encephalitis virus. TaqMan PCR (PE Biosystems, USA) and TaqMan RT-PCR (PE Biosystems) analyses were performed on DNA and RNA extracted from pools of ten ticks grouped by gender. Here, for the first time, it is shown that ticks may harbor Francisella tular…

Lectin histochemistry of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands in rats.

Tissue sections from rat submandibular and sublingual glands were studied with lectin probes to identify terminal sugars of the glycoconjugates in various cell types of the salivary glands. The lectins used in the study were Canavalia ensiformis (Con A), Triticum vulgaris (WGA), Succinyl WGA (S-WGA) Ricinus communis I (RCA-I), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), and Ulex europeaus (UEA-I). The cytoplasm and cell membrane of both the serous and mucous acinar cells present high similarity in the distribution of some sugar residues, but differ considerably in the expression of specific sugars which appear ei…

A serological survey and review of clinical Lyme borreliosis in Spain.

A serosurvey for Lyme disease was conducted by the National Reference Center for Microbiology in Spain. All serum specimens received from pa … Spain (41%) to the south (26%), a distribution that is in agreement with the known range of Ixodes ricinus. Borrelia burgdorferi is a frequent cause of infection in some areas of Spain. It is possible that relapsing fever accounts for some of the serological reactivity to B. burgdorferi in residents of the south of Spain.

Lyme disease.

Within the last decade, Lyme borreliosis has emerged as a complex new infection whose distribution is worldwide. The disorder is caused by a recently recognized spirochete, B. burgdorferi, transmitted by ticks of the I. ricinus complex. Certain species of mice are critical in the life cycle of the spirochete, and deer appear to be crucial to the tick. Although the disorder's basic outlines are similar everywhere, there are regional variations in the causative spirochete, animal hosts, and clinical manifestations of the illness. In the United States, Lyme disease commonly begins in summer with …

Are other tick-borne infections overlooked in patients investigated for Lyme neuroborreliosis? A large retrospective study from South-eastern Sweden.

In Europe, the hard tick Ixodes ricinus is considered the most important vector of human zoonotic diseases. Human pathogenic agents spread by I. ricinus in Sweden include Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia helvetica, the recently described Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Borrelia miyamotoi, tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and Babesia spp. (Babesia microti, Babesia venatorum and Babesia divergens). Since these pathogens share the same vector, co-infections with more than one tick-borne pathogen may occur and thus complicate the diagnosis and clinical ma…

Coffee worker's allergy.

Workers in the coffee industry were investigated. Study I comprised 50 selected cases of whom 25 had work-related symptoms and 25 had not. Prick tests and RAST investigations with different factory dust extracts were performed. Study II was a cross-sectional study comprising 129 workers who were prick-tested with one factory dust extract and with castor bean (CB). More than 40% described occupationally related asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis or pruritus, and in about half of these cases sensitization with one or two allergens was found. One allergen comes from coffee beans and is found in the

Tick-borne encephalitis in pediatrics: An often overlooked diagnosis.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a vector-borne disease caused by a flavivirus, the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and transmitted by the bite of infected Ixodes ricinus ticks. The European subtype (TBEV-Eu) is endemic in 27 European countries. During the last decade, increased TBE incidence was observed in many countries, including some of those believed to be of low endemicity/devoid of TBEV circulation. However, data dealing with TBE in children are far less profuse than with adults. Historically, children are known to have mild TBEV infection with favorable outcomes. That said, rece…

Presence of antibodies against tick-borne encephalitis virus in sheep in Tunisia, North Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEv) is a flavivirus that circulates in a complex cycle involving small mammals as amplifying hosts and ticks as vectors and reservoirs. The current study aimed to investigate the presence of TBEv in Tunisian sheep. A sample of 263 adult sheep were selected from 6 localities where Ixodes ricinus is well established. Sera were screened using ELISA for TBEv IgG detection, then the doubtful and positive sera were tested by the seroneutralisation test (SNT) and screened for West Nile Virus (WNv) IgG for cross-reaction assessment. RESULTS: The ELISA for …

Modeling the effects of variable feeding patterns of larval ticks on the transmission of Borrelia lusitaniae and Borrelia afzelii.

Spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia burgdoferi sensu lato (sl) group cause Lyme Borreliosis (LB), which is the most commonly reported vector-borne zoonosis in Europe. B. burgdorferi sl is maintained in nature in a complex cycle involving Ixodes ricinus ticks and several species of vertebrate hosts. The transmission dynamics of B. burgdorferi sl is complicated by the varying competence of animals for different genospecies of spirochetes that, in turn, vary in their capability of causing disease. In this study, a set of difference equations simplifying the complex interaction between vectors a…

Modeling co-infection of Ixodes tick-borne pathogens.

Ticks, including the Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes scapularis hard tick species, are regarded as the most common arthropod vectors of both human and animal diseases in Europe and the United States capable of transmitting a large number of bacteria, viruses and parasites. Since ticks in larval and nymphal stages share the same host community which can harbor multiple pathogens, they may be co-infected with two or more pathogens, with a subsequent high likelihood of co-transmission to humans or animals. This paper is devoted to the modeling of co-infection of tick-borne pathogens, with special focus…

Seasonal synchrony: the key to tick-borne encephalitis foci identified by satellite data.

A previous analysis of tick infestation patterns on rodents in Slovakia suggested that the key to the focal distribution of western-type tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEv) in Europe is the geographically variable degree of synchrony in the seasonal activity of larval and nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks. This prediction is here tested by examining records, from 7 different countries, of the seasonal variation in the abundance of larvae and nymphs feeding on rodents or questing on the vegetation. Larvae consistently started feeding and questing earlier in the year at sites within TBEv foci than e…

Incidence of tick-bite in man in Aland Islands: reference to the spread of Lyme borreliosis.

The common tick Ixodes ricinus is a vector both for the virus of tick-borne viral encephalitis (Kumlinge disease, KD) and of Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme borreliosis, LB). Bites of the tick are believed to be common in Aland, an island province of Finland in the Baltic Sea. KD has been seen there for many years, and cases of LB have been diagnosed lately. The purpose of this study was to find the incidence of tick-bite among the population with possible implications for the spread of LB. A questionnaire was sent to 561 persons greater than 8 years of age out of a total of 21,281 in order to reco…

The role of lysosomal sialidase and beta-galactosidase in processing the complex carbohydrate chains on lysosomal enzymes and possibly other glycoproteins.

Previous studies using the lectin RCA-I from Ricinus communis have indicated that several lysosomal enzymes in the fibroblasts of patients deficient in beta-galactosidase carry excess terminal galactose. Electrophoretic studies have shown that the same enzymes and the non-lysosomal adenosine deaminase also show excess terminal sialic acid in patients deficient in sialidase. In this paper we confirm, using Jack-bean beta-galactosidase, that the binding to RCA-I of the purified N-acetyl-beta-D-hexosaminidase from a patient with GM1 gangliosidosis depends on a terminal beta-linked galactose. We p…

The structure of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) foci in Central Europe.

The investigations on the structure of TBE foci were carried out in the localities Jívová (northern Moravia), Topolčianky and Žírany (Tribeč Mountains), and environs of Debreczén (Pannonian lowland, Hungary). The biphasic activity curve of Ixodes ricinus, characteristic for the central European conditions was confirmed in all three types. In some localities two or three tick species as vectors come into consideration and the unequal seasonal occurrence of individual species results in a permanent presence of virus-harbouring ticks in nature throughout the year. The average population density of …

Factors relating to the development of respiratory symptoms in coffee process workers.

After several cases of occupational asthma had been reported in a coffee processing factory in England, 197 coffee workers representing 80% of the production workforce were studied to determine the factors affecting the development of work related respiratory symptoms of wheeze, cough, and dyspnoea. Two computer administered questionnaires concerning the presence of respiratory symptoms and the occurrence of work related respiratory symptoms were used. Workers underwent skin prick testing to green coffee bean extract (GCB) and 11 common inhalant allergen extracts and bronchial provocation test
