Background: Toxoplasma gondii is a foodborne zoonotic parasite that can infect humans and a variety of warm-blooded animals. Wild rodents play an important role as intermediate hosts of T. gondii, and the survey data of T. gondii in wild rodents in China are limited. Methods: Therefore, from August 2023 to May 2024, a total of 510 brain tissue samples were collected from nine species of wild rodents, and T. gondii was detected using a nested PCR targeting the B1 gene. All positive samples were genotyped at 11 PCR-RFLP markers (i.e., SAG1, 5'-and 3'-SAG2, alternative SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22

The spread of Lassa virus in West Africa is reliant on the abundance and distribution of its rodent host reservoirs. While the impact of environmental change on viral spread has been studied for many zoonotic viruses, there is still a limited understanding of how seasonal impacts, land-use conversion, and biodiversity loss influence the expansion of Lassa virus among reservoirs. This systematic review synthesizes existing research on the association between environmental variables and Lassa virus circulation in West Africa to inform future research, public health interventions, and One Health

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis caused by exposure to Leptospira excreted into the environment by rodents or other mammals. A notification of a case of leptospirosis in an adult male with no history of travel or exposure to livestock or rodents triggered an environmental health investigation of his workplace, a local golf course. We hypothesised that a water splash in the eye from a creek running through the golf course, which occurred after a period of heavy rainfall, had led to Leptospira exposure, likely on the basis of contamination of the creek water by rodent urine. Testing of environmental

Infectious diseases of zoonotic origin are a serious threat to human health and livelihoods globally. Habitat encroachment and deforestation bring humans and animals into contact, increase potential for disease spread, and foster human-animal conflict. Our aim, using thematic analysis, was to qualitatively examine the zoonotic disease landscape in Nepal from public, policymaker, and healthcare practitioner perspectives, and to describe key human-animal interactions. Community participants at six sites were interviewed or took part in focus groups (n = 73); 20 healthcare practitioner and policy

Parasites are ubiquitous in wildlife populations and have a profound impact on population dynamics. Interest in parasites of wildlife has increased significantly in recent years, particularly in those with relevant conservation status. Patagonia is one of the wildest and remote areas of the world. The Wolffsohn's viscacha lives in a small mountainous area of Patagonia. Until now, little is known about the biology and ecology of this species. The aim of this research was to study the gastrointestinal parasite diversity in this rodent from a coprological survey. A total of 125 fecal samples from

A systematic review of functional neuroimaging studies on drug (self-) administration in rodents is lacking. Here, we summarized effects of acute or chronic drug administration of various classes of drugs on brain function and determined consistency with human literature. We performed a systematic literature search and identified 125 studies on in vivo rodent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (n = 84) or positron emission tomography (n = 41) spanning depressants (n = 27), opioids (n = 23), stimulants (n = 72), and cannabis (n = 3). Results primarily showed alterations in the

The foreign body response (FBR) to implanted biomaterials and biomedical devices can severely impede their functionality and even lead to failure. The discovery of effective anti-FBR materials remains a formidable challenge. Inspire by the enrichment of glutamic acid (E) and lysine (K) residues on human protein surfaces, a class of zwitterionic polypeptide (ZIP) hydrogels with alternating E and K sequences to mitigate the FBR is prepared. When subcutaneously implanted, the ZIP hydrogels caused minimal inflammation after 2 weeks and no obvious collagen capsulation after 6 months in mice. Import

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens pose a great threat to human and animal health. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of ticks that infest camels and investigate the presence of tick-borne pathogens in the blood of camels, associated ticks, and surrounding rodents as reservoirs. From 100 inspected camels, from different localities in the Giza governorate, 1000 ixodid ticks were collected; these ticks belonged to three genera: Hyalomma, Amblyomma, and Rhipicephalus. The genus Hyalomma was represented by four species, Hyalomma dromedarii was the most prevalent species (55.4%), follo

Rodents are typically viewed as asymptomatic reservoirs for leptospirosis infection, as clinical disease in rodents is rarely described. This report includes three separate cases of leptospirosis in Patagonian maras (Dolichotis patagonum) over a 3-yr period in multiple locations within a single zoo. All three cases presented with varying clinical signs including lethargy, conjunctival hyperemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and presumed renal azotemia. Infection with Leptospira spp. was diagnosed antemortem by PCR on whole blood (n = 1, Case 1) or urine (n = 2, Cases 2 and 3). Leptospira antibody titer

Patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) of colorectal cancer have a very poor outcome. Intraperitoneal delivery of chemotherapy is the preferred route for PM treatment. The main limitation of the treatment options is the short residence time of the cytostatic, with subsequent short exposure of the cancer cells. To address this, a supramolecular hydrogel has been developed that allows both local and slow release of its encapsulated drug, mitomycin C (MMC) or cholesterol-conjugated MMC (cMMC), respectively. This experimental study investigates if drug delivery using this hydrogel improves the t

During and immediately after cardiac arrest, cerebral oxygen delivery is impaired mainly by microthrombi and cerebral vasoconstriction. This may narrow capillaries so much that it might impede the flow of red blood cells and thus oxygen transport. The aim of this proof-of-concept study was to evaluate the effect of M101, an extracellular hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (Hemarina SA, Morlaix, France) derived from Arenicola marina , applied during cardiac arrest in a rodent model, on markers of brain inflammation, brain damage, and regional cerebral oxygen saturation. Twenty-seven Wistar rats su

BACKGROUND: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a rodent-borne zoonosis in the Americas, with up to 50% mortality rates. In Argentina, the Northwestern endemic area presents half of the annually notified HPS cases in the country, transmitted by at least three rodent species recognized as reservoirs of Orthohantavirus. The potential distribution of reservoir species based on ecological niche models (ENM) can be a useful tool to establish risk areas for zoonotic diseases. Our main aim was to generate an Orthohantavirus risk transmission map based on ENM of the reservoir species in northwest A

Schistosoma japonicum had once caused the greatest disease burden in China and has still been transmitted in some hilly areas, for example, in Shitai of Anhui province, where rodents are projected to be the main reservoir. This may lead to a critical need of molecular tools with high efficiency in monitoring the dynamic of the rodent-associated S. japonicum, as an appropriate amount of schistosome input can re-establish its life cycle in a place with snails and then result in the re-emergence of schistosomiasis. Therefore, the goal of this study was to develop high polymorphic microsatellites

OBJECTIVE: F-18-fluorothymidine (FLT) is a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer for imaging cell proliferation in vivo. We aimed to assess FLT uptake as a marker for cerebral cell proliferation in a rat model of ischemic stroke and patients with cerebral infarct, correlating with disease severity and outcomes.
METHODS: Cerebral FLT PET was performed in rats subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and patients with cerebral infarct. PET data were analyzed and expressed as average standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) using cerebellar cortex as reference. Infarct

Chronic diabetes may cause secondary complications like stroke and also increase post-stroke brain damage. In stroke research, the Stroke Therapy Academic Industry Roundtable (STAIR) identified criteria to increase translational value of preclinical studies, which highlighted the importance of using animal models of comorbidities. Numerous animal models have been used to study the aggravation of ischemic brain damage in diabetics. In this chapter, we discuss rat and mouse models of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes, with an efficient method provided. We also provide an overview of spontane
