The effect of sublethal doses of Buthus quinquestriatus on the hepatic vascular bed and hepatic parenchyma were studied. The main effect of the venom was primarily on the vascular bed of the liver as manifested by dilatation of branches of the hepatic artery, portal vein together with intravascular thrombi and subcapsular haemorrhages. Apart from mild hydropic degeneration some cells of the hepatic parenchyma showed focal necrosis and Kupffer cells were frequently hypertrophied and contained pigment. In the lung, dilated thrombosed vessels were observed. In the kidney, the vessels showed the s

Intravenous injection of purified scorpion toxin (tityustoxin, TsTX) brings about the appearance of salivary flow and of kallikrein and amylase secretion in the saliva of rats. In experiments performed in vitro, using slices of parotid gland, a dose-response curve correlating tityustoxin concentration with kallikrein and amylase activities was obtained. The secretion of kallikrein is slower and smaller than that of amylase after up to 60 min of incubation. Experiments in which propranolol, phenoxybenzamine or atropine were injected into rats or added to parotid gland slices showed that the rel

The effect of scorpion venom of Buthus Tamulus species on blood pressure, ECG, enzyme and electrolytes were studied in dogs. Venom was given in doses of 2 and 4 mg/kg body weight. Hypotension and tachycardia were observed with low dose and bradycardia was significant with high dose. ST segment depression, T wave changes, shortening of PR interval were the important ECG changes apart from ventricular extrasystoles. With high dose, QRS amplitude was reduced and duration prolonged. QTC interval was also significantly prolonged. Significant increase in SGOT, SGPT and LDH levels were observed but n

The venom of the slender black scorpion Centruroides nigrescens, from the State of Guerrero México, was fractionated by Sephadex G-50 gel filtration, followed by carboxymethyl cellulose ion separation and high-performance liquid chromatography, permitting to obtain two new peptides toxic to arthropods. The estimate LD50 of the soluble venom for the insect Acheta domesticus was 11.1 μg/g body weight, and for the arthropod Armadillidium vulgare was 61.1 μg body weight . The amino acid sequence of toxin Cnige1 (toxic to A. domesticus and A. vulgare) contains 65 amino acids, with a molecular mass

Scorpion venoms are rich in bioactive peptides, many of which act on ion channels and neurotransmitter systems, yet their capacity to interact with G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) has been largely unexplored. Here, we profiled the venom peptides of five species in the family Buthidae and evaluated their activity at the kappa opioid receptor (KOR). Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) revealed species-specific peptide fingerprints in the mass range between 2.5 and 4 kDa, underscoring interspecies peptide toxin variation. Following pre-p
