Adult ewes (17 months of age) were vaccinated against Coxiella burnetii, using a formalin-inactivated whole cell (WC) phase I Henzerling strain vaccine or a chloroform methanol residue (CMR) vaccine. The authors report the stimulatory effects provoked by caerulein on caecum and colon motilities in sheep which are quite opposite to those exerted by the same peptide on the forestomach and abomasal sections. By means of various pharmacological tools these effects are suggested to be attributable to a direct effect of caerulein on the smooth muscle of these viscera through the involvement of receptors different from those ones on which CCK may be antagonizable by proglumide or cGMP pretreatments.

Anticonvulsant therapy often includes diphenylhydantoin (Dilantin) and is usually advocated during the pregnancy of an epileptic woman. In a field trial a flock of 115 winterfed sheep were treated twice with a week's interval with albendazole at a dose of 10--12 mg per kg body-weight to test its efficacy against Dicrocoelium lanceolatum. The treatment was completed one week prior to mating in November, and the investigation was based upon monthly faecal egg counts throughout the housing period. Over the four-year period 1975-78 attempts were made to identify virus in samples from 1231 outbreaks of disease in cattle, and 682 outbreaks of disease in sheep. A virus identification was possible in 26 per cent of these disease outbreaks. The nature and significance of these virus infections is discussed.
