[Intracranial pressure changes during sleep in man].

ICP being a very significant parameter of intracranial pathology, it needs to be recorded continuously. ICP of 7 cases of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and 6 postoperative patients, for whom relationship between REM sleep and ICP was under discussion, was monitored at night and recorded by Brock's method. Polygraphic records also were obtained. Increased ICP was related to REM sleep in 3 of 6 postoperative cases. In the remaining 3 cases, REM sleep could not be observed the first postoperative night, and ICP was lower and stable all night. This fact may be an effect of anesthetic drugs.

Increased dopaminergic transmission mediates the wake-promoting effects of CNS stimulants.

Amphetamine-like stimulants are commonly used to treat sleepiness in narcolepsy. These compounds have little effect on rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-related symptoms such as cataplexy, and antidepressants (monoamine uptake inhibitors) are usually required to treat these symptoms. Although amphetamine-like stimulants and antidepressants enhance monoaminergic transmission, these compounds are non-selective for each monoamine, and the exact mechanisms mediating how these compounds induce wakefulness and modulate REM sleep are not known. In order to evaluate the relative importance of dopaminergi

Neuroanatomical and neurophysiological aspects of sleep: basic science and clinical relevance.

This is an exciting period for basic sleep research, because we are now beginning to understand some of the mechanisms controlling the changes in consciousness associated with sleep and wakefulness. Witness the recent discoveries of a probable genetic involvement in narcolepsy, the identification of hypothalamic structures promoting sleep, and the mounting evidence that adenosine is an endogenous sleep factor. We review these and other recent developments that help us understand the neuroanatomical and neurophysiological basis of some sleep disorders. For a detailed discussion of specific slee

Sleep stage-dependent distribution of interictal epileptiform discharges in epilepsy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sleep and epilepsy interact through complex bidirectional mechanisms. Although NREM sleep facilitates interictal epileptiform discharges (IED), the diagnostic contribution of individual sleep stages remains uncertain. In particular, it is unclear whether deeper sleep stages such as N3 provide an advantage over N2 for spike detection or localization in clinical (electroencephalography) EEG practice. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for studies reporting quantitative IED measures across sleep stages in patients

Breathing disorders during sleep in chest wall diseases.

Chest wall deformity due to kyphoscoliosis may present with two altered breathing patterns during sleep; 1) progressive O2 desaturation particularly during REM sleep and 2) central apnoea also during REM sleep but rarely accompanied by O2 desaturation. No typical breathing pattern abnormality is seen in the rigid spine syndrome.

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder: A Review of the Literature and Update on Current Concepts.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by abnormal behaviors emerging during REM sleep that may cause injury or sleep disruption. The diagnosis requires polysomnography (PSG) demonstrating a loss of normal skeletal muscle atonia during REM sleep. RBD results from dysfunction of the brain stem circuits responsible for maintaining normal REM sleep atonia and suppressing behaviors during REM sleep. The diagnosis of idiopathic RBD (IRBD), that is, RBD without an identifiable cause, is frequently followed years later by the development of a neurodegenerative disorde

Sleep-wake effects of meta-chlorophenyl piperazine and mianserin in the behaviorally depressed rat.

The present study examined the effects of meta-chlorophenyl piperazine (mCPP) and mianserin on the sleep-wake cycle of the clomipramine-induced behaviorally screened depressed rats. Six-hour polygraphic recordings were made between 06:00 and 12:00 h, after a single injection of either saline or mianserin or mCPP into the lateral cerebral ventricle (i.c.v.) of both the depressed (n=12) and control rats (n=12). The injection of mCPP in the depressed rats caused a significant reduction in the total duration and number of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep episodes while it increased the REM sleep ons

Racial differences in heart rate variability during sleep in women: the study of women across the nation sleep study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) differs markedly by race, yet few studies have evaluated these relationships in women, and none have done so during sleep (sHRV). METHODS: We addressed these gaps by examining sHRV in women of African American, Chinese American, or European American origin or descent (mean [standard deviation] age = 51.2 [2.2] years). RESULTS: HRV during Stage 2 non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep differed significantly by race after adjusting for possible confounders. Normalized high-frequency HRV was significantly lower in European Ameri

Entrainment of ultradian oscillations in the secretion of insulin and glucagon to the nonrapid eye movement/rapid eye movement sleep rhythm in humans.

The cause of ultradian oscillations in the secretion of glucagon and insulin with a period length between 70-140 min has been atttributed to feedback mechanisms of glucose and insulin. Influences of the central nervous system on these ultradian glucagon and insulin oscillations remained to be elucidated. In the present study on one occasion, concentrations of glucose, glucagon, insulin, and GH were determined at 15-min intervals from 2100-0700 h in 16 healthy subjects while they were infused with saline solution. On another occasion, concentrations of these hormones during nocturnal sleep were

Sleep Problems in Narcolepsy and the Role of Hypocretin/Orexin Deficiency.

Since its description in the 19th century, narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) has been considered as a model sleep disorder, and after the discovery of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep onset in the disorder, a gateway to understanding REM sleep. The discovery that NT1 is caused by hypocretin/orexin deficiency, together with neurochemical studies of this system, has helped to establish how this neuropeptide regulates the organization of sleep and wake in humans. Current analyses suggest that the main functions of the hypocretin/orexin system are (1) maintenance of wakefulness in the face of moderate sleep d

Sleep disorders in Parkinsonian macaques: effects of L-dopa treatment and pedunculopontine nucleus lesion.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) display significant sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness. Dopaminergic treatment dramatically improves PD motor symptoms, but its action on sleep remains controversial, suggesting a causal role of nondopaminergic lesions in these symptoms. Because the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) regulates sleep and arousal, and in view of the loss of its cholinergic neurons in PD, the PPN could be involved in these sleep disorders. The aims of this study were as follows: (1) to characterize sleep disorders in a monkey model of PD; (2) to investigate whether l-dopa

REM density is associated with treatment response in major depression: Antidepressant pharmacotherapy vs. psychotherapy.

Major depression is one of the most common psychiatric illnesses. Interestingly, a few studies have indicated the existence of depression subgroups, which respond differently to the available treatment options. Previously, sleep abnormalities have been suggested to indicate amenability to different treatment regimens. Thereby, especially REM-sleep parameters seem to play a prominent role, and REM-sleep dysregulation has been repeatedly discussed as a potential endophenotype of depression. With that said, estimating therapy outcome in order to choose the best line of treatment is of utmost impo

Sex differences within sleep in gonadally intact rats.

Sleep impacts diverse physiological and neural processes and is itself affected by the menstrual cycle; however, few studies have examined the effects of the estrous cycle on sleep in rodents. Studies of disease mechanisms in females therefore lack critical information regarding estrous cycle influences on relevant sleep characteristics. We recorded electroencephalographic (EEG) activity from multiple brain regions to assess sleep states as well as sleep traits such as spectral power and interregional spectral coherence in freely cycling females across the estrous cycle and compared with males

Effects of traffic noise on sleep: a review.

Examination of the effect of noise on sleep indicated the following: 1) Views differ on habituation to noise. 2) REM sleep in all-night sleep decreases with exposure to noise. The probability of transient changes of REM sleep to other stages is low. REM sleep induction may be disturbed by noise exposure, but once it has been induced, changes to other stages or waking occur only to a small extent. 3) A transient decrease in sleep spindles is caused by noise exposure, but the number of sleep spindles for all-night sleep increases. Sleep disturbance by noise is compensated for by an increase in s

Research progress in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by abnormal dream acting behavior such as vocalization and twitching related to dream content during REM sleep. The diagnosis requires polysomnography demonstrating a loss of normal skeletal muscle atonia during REM sleep. Both idiopathic RBD and secondary RBD are highly related to synucleinopathy including Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. Almost all idiopathic RBD patients will develop synucleinopathy after a few years. Therefore, RBD may be an early marker in the progression of

Clinical associations between allergies and rapid eye movement sleep disturbances.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis, an immunoglobulin E inflammatory condition including nasal congestion, obstruction, sneezing, pruritus, and fatigue symptoms, has significant impact on quality of life and impairs sleep. Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) patients often have normal all-night apnea-hypopnea (AHI) or respiratory-disturbance (RDI) indices on polysomnography (PSG). We hypothesized that the rapid eye motion-respiratory disturbance index (REM-RDI) may be a novel predictor of allergic status. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 100 patients compared REM-RDI results in 67 allergen-positi
