Mentholated cigarette smoking induced alterations in left and right ventricular functions in chronic smokers.

OBJECTIVE: Possible acute effects of smoking mentholated cigarette on left and right ventricular function is not known. The aim of the study was to compare acute effects of normal and mentholated cigarettes smoking on both ventricular diastolic functions in chronic smokers. METHODS: In a single-blinded, cross-over, open label and controlled study acute effect of smoking of the mentholated and the regular cigarettes was evaluated. Eighteen other than healthy regular cigarette smokers and 20 nonsmoker control subjects were included into the study. To compare the acute effects of mentholated and…

Aberrant p16 promoter methylation among Greek lung cancer patients and smokers: correlation with smoking.

Genetic and environmental factors (dietary and smoking) influence lung cancer epidemiology and induce epigenetic modifications that should be assessed in individual populations. We analyzed p16 methylation among Greek non-small cell lung carcinoma patients and smokers using two-stage methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. One hundred and fifty specimens from cancerous and adjacent non-cancerous tissue, bronchial washings and sputum from patients and 48 specimens, mostly sputum, from disease-free smokers were included. p16 methylation was very frequent in biopsies (82.85%) and bronchia…

Abnormal hippocampal neurochemistry in smokers: evidence from proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 3 T.

OBJECTIVE: In animals, nicotine, the primary psychoactive constituent of tobacco smoke, reduces neurogenesis and increases cell loss in both hippocampus and cortex. Accordingly, tobacco smoking has been linked to reduced performance on cognitive paradigms requiring attention and working memory in humans. However, few prior studies have tested for evidence of structural brain alterations in human tobacco smokers. In this study, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to assess the effects of chronic smoking on neuronal integrity of the hippocampus and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). M…

Nodular glomerulosclerosis: renal lesions in chronic smokers mimic chronic thrombotic microangiopathy and hypertensive lesions.

Cigarette smoking is associated with vascular lesions and chronic renal failure. In this report, we describe clinical and kidney biopsy findings for a 66-year-old woman with a history of long-term heavy cigarette smoking who developed proteinuria and decreasing renal function. This study also describes clinical and kidney biopsy findings for 9 patients with a history of smoking. None of these patients had hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or other risk factors that might result in vascular injury. Renal biopsy specimens showed a range of long-term changes with varying degrees of focal segmental

Augmented transforming growth factor-beta1 in gingival crevicular fluid of smokers with chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Patients who smoke are at increased risk for chronic periodontitis (CP). Also, CP patients who smoke exhibit significantly less reduction of probing depths and gains in clinical attachment compared to non-smokers following periodontal therapy. Several studies suggest that the effects of smoking on the host response may be paramount in regulating the basal systemic inflammatory status and therapeutic outcomes in this cohort. Growth factors, specifically transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1), are critical in regulating the wound healing response by controlling cell division, d…

Predictors of 6-month tobacco abstinence among 1224 cigarette smokers treated for nicotine dependence.

This study examined baseline characteristics associated with abstinence from tobacco 6 months after treatment for nicotine dependence. A total of 1224 cigarette smokers (619 females, 605 males) receiving clinical services for treatment of nicotine dependence between January 1, 1995 and June 30, 1997 were studied. The intervention involves a 45-min consultation with a nicotine dependence counselor. A treatment plan individualized to the patient's needs is then developed. The main outcome measure was the self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence from tobacco obtained by telephone interview…

Discriminative stimuli that control instrumental tobacco-seeking by human smokers also command selective attention.

RATIONALE: Incentive salience theory states that acquired bias in selective attention for stimuli associated with tobacco-smoke reinforcement controls the selective performance of tobacco-seeking and tobacco-taking behaviour. OBJECTIVES: To support this theory, we assessed whether a stimulus that had acquired control of a tobacco-seeking response in a discrimination procedure would command the focus of visual attention in a subsequent test phase. METHODS: Smokers received discrimination training in which an instrumental key-press response was followed by tobacco-smoke reinforcement when one …

Two biochemical markers effectively used to separate smokeless tobacco users from smokers and nonusers.

Data from asbestos workers were used to devise a cutpoint classifier to identify subjects as Nonuser (non-tobacco user), Smokeless (exclusive smokeless tobacco user), and Smoker (ignited tobacco user). In some clinical trials and smoking cessation programs, Smokeless should be separated from Smoker. One therefore needs a marker for smoke exposure, such as thiocyanate, since nicotine levels, as measured by cotinine, could be similar in both groups. Levels of cotinine (ng/mL) and thiocyanate (mumol/L) levels (mean +/- SD) were, respectively: 320.9 +/- 201.1 and 145.9 +/- 63.7 for the Smoker grou

Comparison of the efficacy of pharmacoinvasive management for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in smokers versus non-smokers (from the Trial of Routine Angioplasty and Stenting After Fibrinolysis to Enhance Reperfusion in Acute Myocardial Infarction).

Compared with non-smokers, cigarette smokers with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions derive greater benefit from fibrinolytic therapy. However, it is not known whether the optimal treatment strategy after fibrinolysis differs on the basis of smoking status. The Trial of Routine Angioplasty and Stenting After Fibrinolysis to Enhance Reperfusion in Acute Myocardial Infarction (TRANSFER-AMI) randomized patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions to a routine early invasive (pharmacoinvasive) versus a standard (early transfer only for rescue percutaneous coronary interventio…

Limits of questionnaire-based prediction of oral health-related quality of life in non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) reflects the perceived impact of oral health on daily functioning, psychosocial well-being, and social interaction. While clinical symptoms strongly influence OHRQoL, it is unclear how well OHRQoL can be estimated using only non-clinical information, particularly in non-smoking populations. This study evaluated whether sociodemographic, behavioral, and self-perceived health variables can predict OHRQoL in non-smokers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 130 adults. Participants completed a questionnaire capturing demographics,…

Environmental tobacco smoke exposure and periodontitis in non-smokers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on the association between environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure and periodontitis and tooth loss in non-smokers have reported conflicting findings. This meta-analysis was therefore performed to provide a statistical summary of the evidence. METHODS: A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library was conducted for English-language publications published up to June 9, 2025. Odds ratio (OR) along with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were used to analyze the main outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 14 studies composing 115,9…

Etiology and risk factors for lung cancer in female Asian never smokers: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with a growing proportion of cases occurring in female Asian never-smokers (FANS). Although tobacco exposure remains the predominant risk factor, emerging evidence highlights the substantial role of non-tobacco determinants. However, the relative contributions of these factors remain poorly defined. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on biological, clinical, and environmental risk factors for lung cancer among FANS to identify consistent and potentially modifiable exp…

Assessment of Lung Cancer Risks Related to Family History in Never-Smokers: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer in never-smokers is an increasing issue, particularly in East Asia, where nonsmoking-related risk factors, such as genetic predispositions, play a crucial role. This study investigated the association of family history of lung cancer (FHLC) with lung cancer risk among never-smokers and identified when these risks increased. METHODS: This prospective cohort study used data from the Kangbuk Samsung Cohort Study, which involved 357,322 Korean adults who underwent health screenings from 2011 to 2021. The 167,883 with a history of smoking or previous cancer diagnoses were e…

Program Evaluation for a Novel Multicomponent Smoking Cessation Intervention for Smokers With Serious Mental Illness.

People with serious mental illness (SMI) are more likely to smoke and less likely to quit than the general population. More effective and accessible cessation treatments are needed to promote health and prevent disease in this disparity population. To this end, we optimized a multicomponent health promotion intervention tailored for people with SMI, Breathe Well, Live Well, and conducted a quasi-experimental program evaluation to assess program feasibility and effectiveness compared with a usual care comparison condition consisting of "The 3 As." Community mental health center staff trained as
