Patient-reported outcomes in borderline personality disorder.

Patient-reported outcome (PRO) refers to measures that emphasize the subjective view of patients about their health-related conditions and behaviors. Typically, PROs include self-report questionnaires and clinical interviews. Defining PROs for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is particularly challenging given the disorder's high symptomatic heterogeneity, high comorbidity with other psychiatric conditions, highly fluctuating symptoms, weak correlations between symptoms and functional outcomes, and lack of valid and reliable experimental measures to complement self-report data. Here, we pr

Introduction of a board certification system for the Japanese Society of General Hospital Psychiatry.

The importance of board certification systems is increasing in parallel with changes in the social conditions surrounding general medical practice. The same is also the case for consultation-liaison psychiatry, a subspecialty of psychiatry. As a consequence, in April 2001 a board certification system for the Japanese Society of General Hospital Psychiatry was introduced. The clinical abilities required for liaison psychiatrists in this system can be summarized as follows: the ability to adequately treat patients with physical/psychiatric comorbidity or somatization, the ability to form an appr…

Current predation risk has opposing effects on social learning of foraging locations across two guppy populations.

Social learning, where animals learn from other individuals, occurs in many diverse species. The influential but debated 'costly information' hypothesis posits that animals will rely more on social information in high-risk contexts, such as under increased predation risk. We examined and compared the effects of perceived predation risk on social learning of foraging sites in female Trinidadian guppies from wild and domestic populations raised in common-garden environments. We used a demonstrator-observer pairing where a subject could observe conspecific 'demonstrators' feeding from one of two

Influence of Social Determinants of Health on COVID-19 Infection in Socially Vulnerable Groups.

The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a significant impact on the economy and health, especially for the most vulnerable social groups. The social determinants of health are one of the most relevant risks for becoming infected with COVID-19, due to the health consequences for those who are exposed to it. The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of social determinants in health on COVID-19 infection in vulnerable social groups. A transversal epidemiological study was carried out on 746 individuals in vulnerable situations living in conditions of extreme poverty in dis

Latent profiles of autism symptoms in children and adolescents with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is associated with elevated rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism symptomatology. To better characterise heterogeneity in ASD symptomatology in DS, profiles of caregiver-reported ASD symptoms were modelled for children and adolescents with DS. METHODS: Participants (n = 125) were recruited through several multi-site research studies on cognition and language in DS. Using the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2; Constantino and Gruber 2012), two latent profile analyses (LPA) were performed, one on the broad composite scores of social communication a

Social Contact: Next Steps in an Effective Strategy to Mitigate the Stigma of Mental Illness.

People living with mental illnesses and their families may conceal their conditions to avoid prejudice and discrimination. Stigma often prevents people from receiving adequate health care and other social support services which could exacerbate social and health consequences such as unemployment, homelessness, substance use, and compulsory hospitalization. In this paper, we discuss social contact as a promising anti-stigma strategy for enhancing social interactions among people with mental illnesses, their families, and those without mental illnesses. In particularly, we consider next steps fo

James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership in co-existing dementia and hearing conditions: a research agenda defined by people with lived experience and healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Dementia and hearing conditions are both major public health concerns. Most people living with dementia also live with hearing conditions (e.g. hearing loss, tinnitus, vestibular disorders). Furthermore, hearing loss may be a risk factor for dementia. There is a critical need for research to explain the association between dementia and hearing conditions and to optimise assessments and treatments for this co-morbidity. OBJECTIVE: This James Lind Alliance (JLA) Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) aimed to develop an agenda for research about dementia and hearing conditions by system

Environmental enrichment reverses behavioral alterations in rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid: issues for a therapeutic approach in autism.

Environmental enrichment has been repeatedly shown to affect multiple aspects of brain function, and is known to improve cognitive, behavioral, and histopathological outcome after brain injuries. The purpose of the present experiments was to determine the effect of an enriched environment on behavioral aberrations observed in male rats exposed to valproic acid on day 12.5 of gestation (VPA rats), and proposed on the basis of etiological, anatomical, and behavioral data as an animal model of autism. Environmental enrichment reversed almost all behavioral alterations observed in the model. VPA r

Internet-delivered attention modification training as a treatment for social phobia: a randomized controlled trial.

Attentional biases toward social threat are a well-known phenomenon in social phobia. Recently, computer-delivered trainings have been developed to modify these patterns of attention and thereby reduce anxiety symptoms. Distribution of such attention trainings (ATs) via internet might be a promising approach in overcoming obstacles in health care utilization. However, there is no evidence supporting the effectiveness of internet-based ATs in clinical populations. The current trial examined effects of an internet-based AT on self-report measures, behavioral data and diagnostic status in individ

The moderating role of social networks in the relationship between alcohol consumption and treatment utilization for alcohol-related problems.

Many individuals wait until alcohol use becomes severe before treatment is sought. However, social networks, or the number of social groups an individual belongs to, may play a moderating role in this relationship. Logistic regression examined the interaction of alcohol consumption and social networks as a predictor of treatment utilization while adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical variables among 1,433 lifetime alcohol-dependent respondents from wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol Related Conditions (NESARC). Results showed that social networks moderate the relation

Efficacy of three treatment protocols for adolescents with social anxiety disorder: a 5-year follow-up assessment.

Few studies have reported long-term follow-up data in adults and even fewer in adolescents. The purpose of this work is to report on the longest follow-up assessment in the literature on treatments for adolescents with social phobia. A 5-year follow-up assessment was conducted with subjects who originally received either Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy for Adolescents (CBGT-A), Social Effectiveness Therapy for Adolescents--Spanish version (SET-Asv), or Intervención en Adolescentes con Fobia Social--Treatment for Adolescents with Social Phobia (IAFS) in a controlled clinical trial. Patients' and caregivers' experiences of familial and social support in resource-poor settings: A systematically constructed review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Familial and social support for patients with life-limiting conditions is crucial, especially in resource-poor settings. However, limited knowledge exists about patients' and caregivers' experiences within these informal networks in such contexts. AIMS: This systematic review aimed to (i) synthesise the experiences of patients and caregivers regarding familial and social support in resource-poor settings, and (ii) understand the challenges they face in order to provide evidence for more compassionate, culturally congruent palliative care. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-synthe

Normative data and clinical usability of the brief examination of social abilities: a novel screening test for social cognition.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition impairments are common across neurological and psychiatric conditions and are associated with poor functional outcomes, yet their systematic assessment in routine clinical practice remains limited. This study aimed to introduce a novel screening battery for social cognition, the Brief Examination of Social Abilities (BE-Social), to provide Italian normative data and evidence on its clinical usability. METHODS: The BE-Social assesses various socio-cognitive abilities (i.e., social perception, Theory of Mind (ToM), empathy, and social norm understanding) through sev

Self-other discrimination in face recognition depending on personal familiarity: investigating a sample consisting of Japanese and Han Chinese women.

This study explored how the inclusion of others in the self during face recognition is modulated by personal familiarity, cultural background within East Asia, and autistic traits. Female Japanese and Han Chinese university students completed the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) questionnaire and performed a self-other discrimination task using images of their own face morphed with that of a friend or stranger of the same sex. Thresholds and widths were calculated by fitting a psychometric function to each participant's responses. In both groups, the threshold in the self-friend morphing conditio

Oxytocin prevents the increase of cocaine-related responses produced by social defeat.

The neuropeptide oxytocin (OXT) plays a critical role in the regulation of social and emotional behaviors. OXT plays a role in stress response and in drug reward, but to date no studies have evaluated its implication in the long-lasting increase of the motivational effects of cocaine induced by repeated social defeat (RSD). During the social defeat procedure, 1 mg/kg of OXT was administered 30 min before each episode of RSD. Three weeks after the last defeat, the effects of cocaine on the conditioned place preference (CPP), locomotor sensitization and the self-administration (SA) paradigms wer
