The Association Between Changes in the University Educational Setting and Peer Relationships: Effects in Students' Depressive Symptoms During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Objective: Abrupt life changes imposed by the lockdown measures, with a direct impact on teaching methodology and social interactions, as well as sleeping patterns, harmed university students' mental health. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between satisfaction with online teaching, social interaction with depression, anxiety symptomatology, and to analyze the effects of the pandemic and the lockdown in mental care access. Methods: The online survey collected demographic data, satisfaction with online teaching, and social interaction. We evaluated the depression and anxiety symptom…

Compensatory deficits following rejection: the role of social anxiety in disrupting affiliative behavior.

BACKGROUND: Managing perceived or actual social rejection is an important facet of meeting basic needs for affiliation. Social anxiety disor … istent with expectation, rejection promoted renewed interest in connecting with sources of positive social interaction among participants low in social anxiety. Participants with higher levels of social anxiety, however, failed to react to rejection in a positive or prosocial manner and exhibited some evidence of negative social responses. CONCLUSIONS: Such differe …

Anxiety sensitivity and mindful attention in terms of anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders among Latinos in primary care.

The present investigation examined the interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity and mindful attention in relation to anxiety and depressive symptoms and psychopathology among 145 adult Latinos (85.5% female; Mage=39.9, SD=10.8 and 98.6% used Spanish as their first language) who attended a community-based primary healthcare clinic. As expected, the interaction between anxiety sensitivity and mindful attention was significantly related to number of mood and anxiety disorders, social anxiety, and depressive symptoms. No significant interaction, however, was evident for panic (anxious arousal) s

Social disconnection integrates genetic and proteomic risks in suicidal ideation and depression.

Suicidal ideation (SI) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are complex psychiatric conditions arising from the interplay of genetic liability, molecular processes, and psychosocial factors. While these dimensions have been extensively studied in isolation, their joint contribution to SI and MDD remains unclear. This study integrates multi-modal data to elucidate these synergistic effects and develop robust models for individual-level risk stratification. Leveraging longitudinal multi-modal data from 13,085 UK Biobank participants, we integrated genomic, proteomic, and social connection profile

Reducing negative emotions in children using social robots: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: For many children, visiting the hospital can lead to a state of increased anxiety. Social robots are being explored as a possible tool to reduce anxiety and distress in children attending a clinical or hospital environment. Social robots are designed to communicate and interact through movement, music and speech. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims at assessing the current evidence on the types of social robots used and their impact on children's anxiety or distress levels when visiting the hospital for outpatient appointments or planned admissions. METHODS: Databases such as

Neighborhood social capital and achieved mobility of older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate associations of neighborhood social capital and mobility of older adults. METHOD: A community-based survey (Philadelphia, 2010) assessed mobility (Life-Space Assessment [LSA]; range = 0-104) of older adults (n = 675, census tracts = 256). Social capital was assessed for all adults interviewed from 2002-2010 (n = 13,822, census tracts = 374). Generalized estimating equations adjusted for individual- and neighborhood-level characteristics estimated mean differences and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in mobility by social capital tertiles. Social cohesion as a modifier of joint air pollution exposure and incident dementia.

Social cohesion can reduce stress, increase social interaction, and improve cognitive reserve. These social mechanisms may modify the effects of air pollution on dementia risk. This cohort study examines the potential moderating effect of social cohesion on associations between joint air pollution exposure and incident dementia leveraging data from 5112 community-dwelling adults ≥65 years of age enrolled in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). Study participants were enrolled in 2011 and followed through 2018. We assigned 2010 residential census tract-level exposures to five air…

Subdimensions of social-communication impairment in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: More refined dimensions of social-communication impairment are needed to elucidate the clinical and biological boundaries of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other childhood onset psychiatric disorders associated with social difficulties, as well as to facilitate investigations in treatment and long-term outcomes of these disorders. METHODS: This study was intended to identify separable dimensions of clinician-observed social-communication impairments by examining scores on a widely used autism diagnostic instrument. Participants included verbally fluent children ages 3-13 year

Multi-brain neurofeedback: what are we training for?

Multi-brain neurofeedback offers new possibilities for guiding social interaction by capturing and modulating interpersonal neural dynamics in real time. We propose a hierarchical framework where neurofeedback targets shared sensory dynamics (signal), socio-cognitive processes (functional), or social outcomes (system). We highlight key methodological challenges and potential real-world therapeutic and pedagogical applications.

Neonatal paw pricking alters adolescent behavior in a sex-dependent manner and sucrose partially remediates the effects.

Neonatal exposure to noxious stimuli such as repeated heel lances can cause behavior changes. In the NICU sucrose given prior to procedures attenuates the immediate behavioral response to noxious stimuli but may not ameliorate the long-term consequences, and treatment with 24 % sucrose can brain structure and behavior in adult rodents. We used a rat model to determine whether paw pricks during the neonatal period alter social interaction and/or paw withdrawal thresholds (PWT) in adolescence, and if 7 % sucrose mitigates these effects. One male and one female pup per litter was assigned to each…

The relationship between alcohol consumption, social distancing, and crime rates: insights from the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: While there was a global shift in social interaction and alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, their associations with changes in crime rates remain underexplored. We aimed to examine the associations between crime rates and alcohol use within the context of pandemic-related social distancing. METHODS: We calculated crime rates across crime categories from 2011 to 2022 using crime statistics from the Korean National Police Agency. We estimated two linear regression models with the crime rate as the dependent variable. The first model examined the association of movie a…

Guanfacine Augmentation of a Combined Intervention of Computerized Cognitive Remediation Therapy and Social Skills Training for Schizotypal Personality Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired cognition is a hallmark of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, including schizotypal personality disorder, and it is the best predictor of functional outcome. Cognitive remediation therapy has demonstrated efficacy for improving cognition, augmenting other rehabilitation efforts in schizophrenia, and effecting gains in real-world functioning. Pharmacological augmentation of cognitive remediation has been attempted, but the effects of augmentation on combined therapies, such as cognitive remediation and social skills training, have not been studied. METHODS: Twenty-eight part

[Social order, legitimacy, and physical violence as a social fact].

The article discusses theoretical as well as methodological issues of a general sociology of violence which aims at focusing on the dynamic relationship between social order, legitimacy, and physical violence. The article argues in favor of a relational approach consisting of a realistic appraisal (in an epistemological sense) of the actors' place in a locally ordered setting of relationships among objectified forms of social order, collective identities, and social interaction. The author's long term research objective is to develop a general sociology of violence grounded in social action th…

Social objectives in cancer care: the example of palliative day care.

Social objectives are poorly specified and evaluated in cancer care. Palliative day care is an example where social objectives are often identified but research has focused on health-care outcomes. A literature review identifies four types of social objective: emotional and spiritual care, general social care, services for families and carers and creative arts. Social objectives include: distinguishing between therapeutic work and leisure and supportive interventions, promoting service continuity, reducing social isolation, increasing social interaction, reassuring introduction to palliative c…

Perineuronal nets in cerebellar nuclei neurons orchestrate social behaviour via regulation of neuronal activity in circuits innervated by the cerebellum.

Certain types of neurons in the central nervous system are wrapped in extracellular matrix protein complexes named perineuronal nets (PNNs). … oitinase ABC (ChABC) injection into the deep cerebellar nuclei was associated with an impairment of social interaction compared with sham-operated mice. In the large glutamatergic neurons, neuronal activity was increased during social behavior which was revealed by intracellular calcium dynamics and phosphorylation of cAMP responsive element-binding protein 1 (CREB1 …

The impact of discrimination on binge eating in a nationally representative sample of Latine individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Latines have higher rates of eating disorders characterized by binge eating compared to their non-Latine white counterparts, yet culturally and socially relevant factors related to binge eating in Latines have been largely understudied. The purpose of the current study was to examine how discrimination and acculturative stress were associated with binge eating in a nationally representative sample of Latines. An additional aim was to test the extent to which family cohesion and social support could buffer against the effects of discrimination and acculturative stress on binge eating

Cognitive and emotional impairments in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and cocaine use.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an important modulator of cognitive and social functioning in cocaine addiction but it is unclear whether ADHD symptoms and cocaine use display mutually aggravating interaction effects on cognition, social functioning, and depressive symptoms. Therefore, we investigated the interaction of cocaine use and adult ADHD on social and non-social cognition and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Twenty-four cocaine users with (CU+ADHD) and 30 without ADHD (CU-ADHD), 29 cocaine-naïve ADHD patients, and 40 cocaine-naïve healthy controls underwen

The intersection of structural social factors, loneliness, and social activity in individuals with psychotic disorders.

INTRODUCTION: People with psychotic disorders are disproportionately lonely, which is associated with negative health outcomes. Structural and subjective factors determine social connectedness, and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) enables simultaneous quantification of social activity. However, how structural factors (e.g., relationship status, living situation) and sociodemographic variables moderate the relationship between social activity and loneliness in psychosis is unknown. METHODS: N = 253 participants with a psychotic disorder completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale. Social activity

Social Rejection and Alcohol Use in Daily Life.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have found that social rejection is associated with increases in negative affect, distress, and hostility. Fewer studies, however, have examined the impact of social rejection on alcohol use, and no known studies have tested whether the impact of social rejection by close others differs from social rejection by acquaintances in its association with subsequent drinking. METHODS: Participants completed event-contingent reports of their social interactions and alcohol use for 14 consecutive days on smartphones. Multilevel negative binomial regression models tested wheth…
